Andrew,

Normally galvanised steel needs to be etch primed prior to painting so I would guess that a similar process is required prior to polyester powder coating.

As for cost it will depend on the colour and what batches of that colour the powder coating shop is doing at the time. I understand that they have to clean the gear between different colours.

Don't know any powder coaters in WA

Had a hunt around on google

Here http://www.finishing.com/2000-2199/2026.shtml

All of which seem to say yes, and possibly they'll gal over your welds as a prep before they powdercoat.

Cheers

Simon.

Page 5 of the pdf says this -
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'>Warning to Powder Coaters
Bubbling of the coating may occur when trying
to powder coat galvanized sections that have had
heavy white rust removed.
This can occur at any spot where you can feel
surface roughness after the white rust has been
removed. There may be a “black spot” in the
bottom of these holes.[/b][/quote]

Combine that with the comments about powder coating on welds and it sounds like your post-welding finish better be very good.

Cheers

Simon.

Thanks guys
Welds shouldnt be a problem,I have a mig,I will turn the gas up a bit more than usual, the more gas the better the weld.
I think I will contact a powdercoater before I start.

No problem with the gal tube being powder coated. a mate of mine makes pool fences with the stuff and gets them all powder coated. As far as cost, if its a normal color like black that they do regularly it would probubly be about $100 or less or some thing close.

I had a full length rack sand blasted and powder coated satin black for $170 - $100 for the rack, total for $270. Same racks at 4wd show were $675 !
