A diesel 4wd (not a Land Rover) I have does a lot of short running and recently started to get a whistling noise coming from the engine bay whilst driving. The noise could be altered with slight throttle movements etc. and I suspected the EGR. A few weeks back I went on a one thousand kilometre trip towing a laden bogie trailer, after about two hundred kays the noise disappeared and as yet has not returned.
Obviously a bit of hot air through the old girls gills done her the world of good.

It was a stock Sydney car...

Justin Has now cleaned it out and Done a remap and EGR block...

Anyone that works on modern light diesel vehicles will see this as the norm, that one is a pretty good example.

I do say the "fad" of the last 10 years is.... Bottled water and turbo diesel vehicles....


Once the EGR blanking or emulating has been done, it can take only a few thousand km's to clear itself out, as in the pick below.

I haven't been using my D3 for a while (due to a lot of different reasons) and haven't kept up with the EGR blanking etc, so what is the "latest" news on the subject, I have a 2007 D3 by the way... thanks.

2007 will need an emulator or a remap with electronic delete. 2005 to 2006 are fine with blank8ng off no check lamp will come on.

Contact Mark (Auto Code) he does emulating for the Discovery 4 3.0lt and see if its at a retail package as yet. He is also a member on here.

There seem to be a lot of GU's and Iveco vans parked on the side of the roads around here.

Idling away,taking the occasional pic of an unsuspecting motorist.

I wonder how badly their engines clog up?

EGR can be a pain just a heads up though


not only the air intake suffers engine oil also suffers


remove the dipstick and rub oil on fingers if it turns clear the oil is good if it stains your fingers and oil stays black then the oil has to much contamination of carbon


egr is mostly active at idle and lowto mid RPMS but eventually the EGR valve seat will not close correctly this then allows EGR gasses all the way through the rev range

I think the point that Tombie is making is that there are several people with oil/lubricants background on AULRO who in various threads have disproved the 'oily residue on fingers theory'. :D ;)

are you referring to engine breathing oil


or engine oil on the dipstick

Reading between the lines, I think Tombie means that even though the oil might not leave a residue on your fingers, it might still be due for replacement so it can't be used as a definitive test for engine oil quality. Happy to stand corrected though. I am a neophyte when it comes to engine oil tech specs! :D

I do like the you speaking for tombie but remember he is a grown man he can speak for himself


I am no engine oil specialist either but I do take oil samples from trucks then they get sent off


all those that run EGR the reports come back low viscosity @ 40k
all those that run add blue /urea the viscosity comes back low 60 to 70 K


I understand I am talking roadtrains and not landrovers but emissions is emissions


we have found sevice intervals those that actually spray urea in the exhaust to be less


but a dollar a litre for urea we also bypass this system with a module

I just remember it caused a bit of a bun fight on a couple of threads here and some other forums as well when I looked into it. The oil filter on a TD5 can work well enough to mask the oil losing its protective/lubricative properties, so the rule of thumb tends to fail in that particular case. For other vehicle engines (heavy/light/diesel/petrol) it might be a different story.

when I first purchased my Td5 2nd hand the oil was very black also spinner filter was not working


I bypassed my EGR and changed filters it still wasn't long before the spinner stopped working again and it did take a while for my engine oil was clean after many oil changes


now that I have my oil so clean I only change my spinner filter when I hear it not spinning when engine shuts down gets changed every 2nd service


I will agree rubbing the oil between fingers is only a visual check and not a full test but it is a good test and it gives a nice indication once you know your own vehicle


once you get to know your own vehicle engine oil is clean egr bypassed you can tell by the finger rub between services remember I have 30000 on the clock so I do expect to see some carbon in the oil as my piston rings are not exactly brand new

overall for what is in discussion in this topic, No but so long as you ignore the why bits (because thats all to do with petrol engines not diesels) and limit what you're looking at to the electronically controlled example then Yes thats near enough for a laymans understanding.
