G'day everyone, from a recent trip of a lot of dirt roads dust has come through my tailgate where the top and bottom sections meet. This has never happened before, the difference is now im towing a camper trailer can't help think this is creating some sort of up drought. Has anyone else experienced this ?

Cheers
Lucas.

Towed our camper thru the gibb river road and many other dirt roads and never had an issue.

Was the tailgate shut correctly ?

Cheers Ean

Yeah I checked all doors when the boss was complaining of smelling dust .

Dust also gets in through the rubber gasket/breathers behind the tail lights, and also through the spare tyre winder.

Just a thought, but maybe the seals have degraded. If they're anything like the door seals on my MY13 D4 they are not very sturdy and wear easily. I had a door seal replaced that wore down in less than 6 months after delivery because of my jeans rubbing it when entering the vehicle. Both sides have gone again and will be replaced before warranty expires in November. The service manager said that it was a known issue as the seals are rubber rather than synthetic. They normally do seal very well though.

Sorry can't help on that one Lucas as mine doesn't let any dust in.

I am free Monday if you wanted to meet up and compare your seals against mine.

Cheers Dale but I'll have to take you up on that offer another time I'll be on the Reynalds river track on Sunday / Monday . The seals still look like new so not sure what happened the car has done a lot of dirt kms and it hasn't happened before so it will be interesting to see what happens tomorrow.

Lucas, take a look at the "wedges" either side of the tailgate. They might need adjusting a little to allow the tailgate to close properly (or they might be very worn, as mine were, meaning the top tailgate flaps around a little)

Did you have your AC on outside or recirc?
Did you have the fan on?
No windows open?

Cheers Dave, I had a look at the wedges they look really good. But when I push the tailgate when closed it moves like the latch may have some play in it :angel:

Perhaps put the boss in the back to check when you are on the Reynolds Track on Monday

Take your rear lights off, then have a look whether a gap is made between the seal and inside of the tailgate when you move the tailgate in and out. And also, lookup the rain channel see if the two sides of the wedge are contacting each other correctly.

There's your problem - if you have recirc off, the cabin fan provides enough positive pressure to stop dust ingress. Recirc on, and you don't get that very slight increase in cabin pressure.

You beat me to it Justin.Recirc is for people who like the smell of their own farts:wasntme::wasntme::wasntme::wasntme:
Fresh will help keep the interior pressurised, keep the fan as high as you can tolerate noise wise.
In the D4 you have to beg the thing to recirculate your farts, modern vehicles are fairly air tight which can cause oxygen depletion on long drives.

I see your point but I've put 100,000 kms on the car since I bought it and have driven plenty of dirt roads ( we get out as much as we can ) with ricirc on and off and it has never done this before. You could actually see dirt/ dust along the plastic trim on top of the bottom part of the tailgate where the button is to release the lower gate.

I have lived on dirt roads for more than half my life, so have done a few km on them too ;)

The thing you noted was this time you had a camper attached - this more than likely created a nice low pressure area behind your window allowing the dust to collect before coming in through any seals that would otherwise be pressurised with the fresh air on.

I tend to agree with Justin.
If you want to suck dust try a Holden Rodeo or Colarado.Even using the aircon you cant keep the dust out in winter:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:
