The starter motor on the Rangie finally died today. After ringing
around I found that I had the ancient brick size starter motor &
everyone recommended getting the newer type.

The problem is that now that I have it all back in, when I start the
car the starter motor does not turn off!! It does turn off if I turn
the key to start then off again a few (hundred) times.

I have checked all the wiring with the starter disconnected and it is
all fine (no different than when it was working on the old starter)
and the relay turns off as soon as you release the key from the start
position. It must be getting the power from inside the solenoid as
even when I pulled off the wire from the starter relay, it still had
12v on it???

Should I be wiring it up different? Anyone got any idea's?

<span style="color:blue">did you test it on the bench first.....?

No I did not test is first as it was brand new. But yes I think I have come to the conclusion the solenoid is faulty so will take it back. The worst part is we are meant to be heading away for the long weekend first thing Friday morning and Rangie Automotive (who i bought it from) have no more in stock. Hopefully he has another old one I can borrow for the weekend.

Just make sure it's not the old one I left there on Monday morning.

Did he sell you a new one or a reco one?

I bought a reco Bosch type with the reduction gearing in it and it works just fine.

I saw the old one in a box at the door. No he sold me a brand new bosch reduction starter, but it is faulty. They are trying to get in another one today.
