I had a brand new D4 HSE loan car today,it had a whole 535km on it:cool::cool::cool::cool::cool::cool:
The SDV6 certainly has a fair bit more go than the 3.0TDV6,I dare say that would really come in handy when towing, its isnt required around town.I did notice it will and does happily do 70kmh at 1000rpm,mine wont give you 1000rpm@70kmh,even if you try and make it.1200rpm seems to be its programing.
HSE seats. They certainly are more comfortable, having more adjustments and slightly more leg room. The loverly chair arm,a total waste of cow hide for a fat bastard like me,it is too close to the chair:(:(:(:(:(:(.Deb liked hers.
Mirrors,I liked the dipping when reversing.
Central locking, liked not having to get the fob out to unlock:cool::cool::cool::cool:
It was Corris Grey with the light leather interior,in the carpark it looked like any other D4,the interior was too light for my liking, especially when used to black leather and tinted glass.
I returned it to the dealer and collected Snow White, she was looking her best after a wash and tyre shine after her service.I got in,and felt at home again. In MY D4,and she felt like a comfortable slipper too.Double up permagrin:cool::cool::cool::cool:

I have driven a lot of used D4s lately, some of which are HSEs. They are nice and I will buy one soon but I wish they sounded like my V8.They are not a lot slower but I love that sound. I have looked at a V8 D4 but I can't justify the fuel cost. One thing I think I like about the D3 the most is when I scratch it I don't cry.

Last time I had mine serviced they gave me an HSE Disco sport for the day....
Obviously your dealer likes you more than mine likes me..
The sport wasn't bad for zipping around town in..... but it was nice to get back into my own at the end of the day...
Did the HSE D4 have stop start?..... it's the one thing about the disco sport that I hated. Maybe I'm just well down the road to being a grumpy old man

I got a Disco Sport HSE when I got my windows tinted last december,I quite liked the thing.

I recommend you blokes don't drive a L322 tdv8.
A little anecdote. I drove my 4BD1 110 to a test drive on a Puma 110. I liked my 4BD1 better to be honest. I thought is that all that JLR has to show after 25 years of development. Anyway the salesman noted my displeasure and strongly persuaded me to take a used D4 HSE for a drive. That was a really bad choice. Powerful, quiet, comfortable. And then I drove a L322. 😀

A few years ago a stupid bloke test drove one of those big heavy SDV6 D4s, wondering what he'd have to do to make it go like his chipped TD5 D2a that he was perfectly happy with,...
I for one am not driving a L322 tdv8 :D
Well not yet.....;)

At the first year service, they asked if I would like a loan car...... I said yes please, and with a view to driving something different, I asked if they had a Defender? No sorry, we don't have them as loan cars.......what about a Range Rover? No sorry, not them either...... So they booked me an Evoque and I ended up with a Jaguar XF.
Anyways, I digress, more recently they gave me a near new D4 HSE. Notable differences were the softer leather (Windsor upgrade me thinks) and the more nimble ride (20inch vs 19inch rims). There were other differences such as rear air, but in total, not enough for me to pay the extra for. However, each to his own. I do hope the D5 is available by the time my last free service comes around. Keen to see how it would compare to the D4

I have had everything from Volvos XC 60s to Evoques as loaners. It is a great way to check out new technology. You read abut stuff like adaptive cruise, blind spot warning, and that reverse park thingamy but without actually trying it you wouldn't really know. I quite liked the blind spot alert. I thought it was funny when I lived in Sydney and took the Defender To Trivetts in Alexandria for a service. They had everything from Bentleys, Aston Martins and Lotuses. i never got a loaner but I thought it was funny leaving a Defender next to an Aston Martin for a service. Judging by the recent prices for defenders, maybe they are in the same league.

That's exactly why I've never been game to drive a D3 or D4, keep looking for reasons why I don't 'need' one and do all my own servicing!

Wifey didn't like Discos,.....that is, until we got a D4 as a loaner during a Gracie service,....she drove home & back,...only took her a few seconds behind the wheel,...and the comment was,...."How good is this"?!

if you mainly drive in stop start rush hour traffic then the V8 would be expensive I would guess, if however you do lots of freeway and country or even suburbs driving then the V8 costs in fuel is not a huge lot more than the diesel. plus add up both vehicles servicing costs in the long run and the V8 makes the diesel end up looking expensive.
Bang for your buck the V8 is exceptional value and has every single option Land Rover offered fitted standard and is by far the best vehicle I have owned and it blows the doors off of most other vehicles on the road if you want to be a boy racer.

There was one at a dealers here recently for $57000 with 70000 kms. They were fixing some scratches on the wheels and I didn't get to drive it. I was very interested. Once The F6 is gone i will get serious. They weren't prepared to give me enough for the trade. My main dissapointment with the D3 V8 is towing. My camper trailer is only 750kg and it does 16L/100 Km towing it. I get 12L/100Km without the trailer on trips. That I can live with. I wonder how hard it would be to retro-fit the supercharger from the RRS.

Plenty around the Lagoon at the moment. As well as all those eating the berries on the native figs next to the house. ;)

Carl, I to had concerns about fuel consumption when towing but then rationalised it out with the fact that we only tow occasionally so who cares if it uses a bit more fuel once every month or three.
Towing our 2.5 ton van on the freeway it used about 5 litres per hundred more fuel than the 2.7 D3, however it hums along so well I have found myself going much faster when using the D4, so if I could keep my right foot more off of the go peddle who knows what the actual difference would be.

What year was the last V8 made? I am just curious if there ever was an 8 speed version. My D3 has an awesome exhaust system. I am thinking the back part at least would be transferable.

All V8 D4's are six speeds which I personally don't consider a issue, but consider the up side they come with the following;
Cold weather pack included heated screen.
Digital TV with screens in the head rests and the dash screen
Top of the line Logic 7 stereo with DVD player
Surround camera's
Adaptive head lights
The flash soft leather electric memory captains seats.
Sunroofs
Ediff
Electric memory steering column adjustment
Centre consul fridge
20' rims
Automatic electric fold in side mirrors
And basically all other HSE standard features.
Imagine how much a D4 with all those options would cost now. To me anyway the best thing of all is it has the ultra reliable and cheap to maintain petrol V8 and if I'm buying a Disco out of warranty then that is the most important consideration there is, all those extras are just a bonus.

Yeah sounds great Terry, only downside is long range touring, especially desert driving.

Agreed but every vehicle has strengths and compromises.
In reality 99% of Disco's will never see the outback, so for the vast majority it's not such a big deal.
Fit a Long range tank though, like yours, and you have 200 litres to use, put two Jerry's on the roof or the rear bar and there wouldn't be to many places you couldn't go I reckon with 240 litres. Plus you would take octane booster with you and depending on where you go there are a few places where you can buy petrol.
Plenty of people have previously done outback trips in petrol vehicles so with the right planning it might not be such a big deal for the 1% of Disco owners who do serious outback touring.
It would be interesting to find out what the actual fuel consumption is for the V8 in sand driving, then you would know if it was feasible or not.

Petrol sniffing in Arnhem Land is what put me off the 4.0 (and probably the 4.4 if I'm honest :p) when buying the D3.
Can certainly understand your preferences Terry but for me it had to be diesel.

Sorry to hijack your thread Andrew with all this talk of V8s. TerryO makes a very convincing argument for the D4 V8. I just checked with GOE website and the 18" rims fit.:D. I like the the L322 but I feel I understand the architecture of the D3-4 now and I can save a few bucks with using my bullbar/winch and Kaymar rear end. If only I could get my 100L aux tank to fit. I am used to the economy now and with the extra 100L I am more than happy with 1000km + range. I can get 1500km from my D3 on the highway. New generation diesels do scare me when they are out of warranty and especially the fact that turbos etc need the body off to fix. I have a lot of spares from mine and if I could sort the electronics I reckon the 4.4 would go very well in a AC Shelby Cobra kit. Tell me I am dreaming. I wanted to build one of them since I was a kid. Does anyone think the supercharger from a RRS could be retrofitted? Oh it is nice to dream.
I am looking swapping my Husky dirt bike for a Suzuki DR650 for commuting and the D4 will be for kids and trips. I have been told by my leasing company I could get a car as old 2010, if it is the right car. Salary sacrificing is not the great deal it used to be but at least I get tax deductible fuel.

The L322 is 5,0. I'm pretty sure the D4 is also 5.0. It produces approx/almost the same numbers as a 4.2SC.
Yes you can't fit a bulbar to a L323. But it ccomes standard with 100lt tank.

The 5.0L with the Supercharger produces another 100KW taking it to 376KW from memory. In the SVR version of the RRS they are producing 404KW.

There are a couple of good YouTube vids on the SVR. A mind blowing machine.
Yes the 5.0 SC in either the L322 or L494 or L405 would be the pic.
