View Full Version : Electric vac pumps, and alternate alternator options???

So, as per usual, my alternator/vac pump combo is leaking oil and my pink slip inspection guy has chipped me for it.

I remember seeing a while back, someone selling VE commodore electric vacuum pumps in the market section, and got to thinking that perhaps one of those, and a standard type alternator may be an option for the old TD5.

Just putting the feelers out for any info of to see if anyone has researched a different alternator for the TD5, mounting may be quite tricky due to it being set so far rearward due to the vac pump on the front.

how bad is it leaking oil once pressure cleaned for inspection only


remove alternator and remove vac pump tear it down and replace the seal you might need a speedy sleeve as the shaft maybe worn


I haven't yet did a TD5 but now saying that I geuss I will be in the next few weeks LOL


I have rebuilt the old Nissan terrano alt and vac pump twice


the first time I only replaced the seal only ..it leaked


2nd time round
turned out the shaft was worn / burnt where the seal had been running.... so I renewed the seal and installed a speedy sleeve ..at the same time I replaced the brushes in the alt

When my alternator stopped charging I just bought another to get me going quickly.

Mine leaks a little but it is only from the return hose as I used the old hose and the factory clamps.

New hose and clamps might be all you need.

That was me with the vac pumps i sort of lost track of the post and i think it went to the forgotten post world. I dont think there was any interest in them.
To be honest it would be a task to connect as you would have to regulate the vac pump some how as to not suck you vac booster inside out;)

What regulates them when fitted to the commodore?
On a normal petrol car, u see up to 20inches/hg of vac. Surely it wouldn't create more vac than that???

That my friend i think has a lot to do with electrickery in the ECU . Hence why i never went further with my plan`s :cool:

There's a bloke on a Holden forum who quotes figures of Min 16" and max of 24"hg. It's fitted to an EH.
