Hi there! Well after 13 years (mostly good but very bad towards the end) and 270,000kms our Td5 is finally no longer reliable enough to tow our horse float so we've decided to get either a TDV6 or SDV6 (looking at a late MY12 or MY13 in either model and probably an SE or HSE). Test drove a 2013 TDV6 (3L, 8spd auto) today and felt nice enough. My questions are:

1) is there that much of a difference in torque between the 2 models I am looking at? On paper only a difference of 80Nm and an extra turbo, but does it make that much of a difference? I regularly tow 2.2T and not very often tow 3T.

2) as we are purchasing second hand, is it worth paying that little bit extra to buy from an authorised dealer (Alto/Trivett etc) and paying the $4k for the extended 2 year/200,000km warranty? Or if we purchase privately and the car still is under the original 3 year warranty (if it was taken out), can we add some sort of extended warranty on it? When we purchased Td5 all those years ago, again second hand, we paid Alto $1000 for a 3 year extended warranty which was a great help when things like gear box and drive shaft went bust!

We are in Sydney NSW if this helps at all.

Also had a great read in the electric brake controller thread - very valuable advice in there!

If you are looking at a 3.0TDV6 versus a 3.0SDV6, they are both twin turbo. The torque and power differences are mostly down to different tuning.

Not had a D4 myself, but there is enough anecdotal evidence in this forum that says the extra horses are worthwhile. ;)

I have a 2014 3.0 TDV6 8 speed.It tows my HEAVY(1500kg) camper trailer like it isnt there.
I had a brand new SDV6 last friday as a loan car whilst mine was getting serviced.
Yes it had more grunt,my thoughts were that grunt would only be usable in towing or destroying ones licence!!!!!!,as my TDV6 goes plenty well enough as a daily driver.
I too went D2 TD5 to D4.
I would say the TDV6 would easily tow the same trailer you have done with the D2,with less stress. The SDV6 even easily more. Then there is the increased economy over the D2:cool::cool::cool::cool::cool::cool:

So 3L TDV6 and 3L SDV6 are both twin turbo? Interesting as that's not what Trivett told us yesterday.... so what is the difference between these 2 models?

Maybe it was a MY12 TDV6 2.7L single turbo - and not the 3L twin turbo TDV6. You might want to check out what they have. ;)

To be 100% accurate, they are both sequential turbo, rather than twin turbo, but hair splitting aside, you need to run away from that salesman at great speed. Ask him to lift the bonnet, and see if he can count as far as 2. ;)

As I said in my original post, the differences between the output of the two engines is mostly down to tuning.
