As you lot are not as, i shall i say speedy as us poms, i shall tell you a funny story that happened the other day
A mate rents out a room in his house. And a chap called Grant from Sydney rents the room. They were out on our usual tuesday night curry night with the boys. When grant was going on about his scuby. When they started going on about what was the fastest they have driven a car. Grant said 150 , and toby siad he had done 160 in his TVR. Grant wanted to go out in his tvr so that weekend they went for a drive down a road near us (where you all used to go to test cars as kid) Has a long nice striahgt. As toby was putting his Tvr though it paces he noticed Grant looking a white as a sheet
He asked him what was up, as they were blatting down this road.
At which point grant said i was talking K's. i have driven at 150 Kph not 150 mph. At that point they were doing 158mph or for you lot nearly 260Kph.
You see after i drive up and down the motorway in the Uk (which is my job) and am keeping up wih the traffic doing 160kph.
mmmm going to have to slow down when i get to Aus. The poor 90 will not know what is going on . It spends most of its time doing 140-150 KPH on the motorway here style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif

260kph on a motorway, thats for girlies. Try 340kph on an Aussie outback road on a 200hp at the rear wheels Guki Hayabusa. 260kph on a Ducati or 270kph in a highly modified Torana on an outback road dodging roos, emus and goats.

G'day Ali,
Two points
1. The roads are never good enough to do great speeds - most just seems to end and filter into a single lane (except VIC - some nice roads style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif )
2. The b'stards never keep to the left - so what you and I would call the "fast lane" has some dickhead in a V8 5.7 litre Dunndore doing 110kmph and all other lanes doing the same 110kmph
But you get used to it - amazing how a speeding 2 tonnes+ of Disco / Rangie with bullbar approaching close to the rear of that Dunnydore do they suddenly remember to move left style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif

I will second LRH's comments regarding dipsticks on freeways. No one knows how to use them. The most irritating thing is people doing 90 in the middle lane, and forcing everyone behind them to slit in two.

Hit the rev limiter in top gear in a GTHO (IIRC, @ 7100 RPM) on the M4 at Penrith. It was well on the wrong side of 140 mph.

That's not even trying, I've had my '83 subaru faster than that. Heck, i've had a trailer to 160 km/h.
My best was 190km/h in a subaru outback (not mine, dads  ), and it would have gotten to 200 as it wasn't maxed out yet.

When I was young and silly about forty years ago I did Brisbane to Roma in three and a half hours - it is over three hundred miles, includes the range at Toowoomba, and west of there almost all single lane bitumen. Not bad for a 1.9litre 69hp eight seater (Citroen ID19 - admittedly good aerodynamics).

Like George130, I was out the other side of Beaudesert on a long straight. A fair way along the straight in front of me was a farmer in a tractor so I booted the RR to over take him before we got to the end.
I had already gone around him and was back on the correct side of the road and slowing down before I looked at the speedo. It still showed 180 and I have lived on the cruise control ever since.
The fastest I know I have done is 197 ( according to the speedo ) over Sydney Harbour Bridge at 2 in the morning in my Charger, about 1975. My two mates, one in an A9X and the other in an E Type left me standing in their wake, no idea what speed they were doing.
Oh how times have changed.

Hi Zook, I don’t know about the speedo moving in reverse.
About 6 months after I bought the RR, I was out west of Wee Waa at the height of the drought. I could see nothing more than the marker posts on the side of the road, from horizon to horizon so I got up to 160 kph and put on the cruise control and drove for about 20 + minutes like that.
The only thing moving quicker than the wheels was the fuel gauge and that was in reverse.
The RR is not very economic at speeds over 110.

My 1970 HG 350 Bathurst Monaro saw 240kph (Well thats what the cops radar said anyway  ).
My 350 chev rangie has seen 180kph on the speedo with 35's on. So add 25% to that.

I used to clunk this old girl (White Road Boss, V8 Detroit and a 13 speed road ranger) from Darwin to Townsville and over to Broome and all parts inbetween....... with 80 tons she could do 130 kmh down a long gentle hill outside Pine Creek ..... at that speed the roos just used to bounce off the bar like bugs on a windscreen. She still had a bit more left but i used to chicken out when the turbo started to whine like a 747 and the rear dog would whip thru the steering..................... This pic was taken when the century mine was being built ...... The tojo is the mine managers .... he was too scared to drive it from Darwin.

What an amazing car. It was the model with the "Barrel Gauges" on the dash as opposed to the normal looking gauges. Oh so long ago, but the memory lingers. I also owned an XJ6 and a Daimler 6 at the same time. It was literally the house of Jaguar. My English love affair went:
Morris 1100
Triumph 2.5 TC
Daimler
XJ6 Jag

Holy smokes Trev, I remember when the CBX came out (I was still in school style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif ) and how bloody quick (and heavy) they were.
Inline six across the frame. Wow.
Older mate around the corner had a GSX 750, and his older brother that raced a LD350 Yamaha (and was saddly killed on the Putty road) had a GSX 1100. Weed used to reckon that just the bumps in a sweeper making the hand rock a little on the throttle would cause the rear end to break traction. He said it was too much bike for him. Oh, and it felt like the frame was hinged in the middle compared to his little 450 Desmo Ducati, or his brothers traded in Laverda. I just used to sit and dream.....

Bikes are by far the quickest I have been on. Not any more though Too scary on a bike at 240kph plus. Wifes Vt Commodore off the clock, My 1976 SS Torana off the clock. Just dont tell the kids, trying to teach them the righty and to avoid high speed.
What a hypocrite I am.

As a driver my speed record is 220kph in a Morgan Plus 8. Not super fast but the roof was down and it was a lovely sunny day. I wanted to do exactly twice the speed limit. As soon as I got there I slowed down to a more pleasurable 150kph
The nicest drive I ever had was in a 1969 Aston Martin DB6 through a lovely twisty drive around Dwellingup. On some stretches I hit 120mph but it was the way it stuck to the road on corners at around 60-70mph that impressed me most. A very fine motorcar of an order of magnitude superior to the E-Type in road holding. The E-Type is perhaps one of the most beautiful cars ever built, though.

Yeah, did not mention 130mph in a friends MG convertible with the top down. Now that was a fun car to drive. I reckon one of these might be on the agenda when the kids are gone. The other car that was nice to drive and took up to 220kph was a friends Mercedes 190E. I did not think it would do it but it did and handled well.

Crikey that plane story just reminded me of a flight I took from Perth to Exmouth in the back of a Carribou. Anyone who thinks Series Landys are slow, draughty and noisy of obviously never went anywhere by Carribou. At least with an old Landy you can stop for a leak/beer.

Hi Frenchie,
8O 8O 8O 8O 8O
Love the aircraft. My similar claim to fame was in an Orion on Maritime Patrol in NZ. Similar speed from memory flying at 200 ft down the coast line of the North Island. I could smell the salt coming through the skin.
Alas I was not flying but hanging on for dear life behind the Flight Engineer.
The pilot had puchased a beach front property and asked if we would like to see it, we said yes, and next thing we were down there!
Just love it.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'>1985 Volvo 740 Turbo tweeked. 190kmh sideways at Sandown in the rain under power. Speedo at the time read over 250kmh, i was clocked by another car at 190kmh as i pulled it straight from the slide on the back straight. What is the colour of Adreniline??? BROWN
1974 Volvo 164 Rally car 190kmh at 7500rpm on dirt.....[/b][/quote]
Ahh, the memories come flooding back.....
I had that old Commodore sideways on dirt @ 135-145km/h a few times. Once was a memorable Swedish flick with a blind crest at the apex so the car was straight as it took off. My mate Chris was sitting beside me at the time and can verify it. How the hell I'm still alive I don't know...... 8O
Numerous times on the track, including fully sideways in turn 1 at Eastern Ck at my second ever race meeting (touring car round) on a damp track. Approx 200+km/h. My bloody team mate was trying to out psych me, telling me after the first practice session that anyone worth their nuts went through there flat....so I did. Took me three tries, and got a round of applause from the flaggies for hanging onto it the third time. Got it everytime after that.
What he forgot to tell me was that you go through there flat (210-215km/h) in the dry. You should seen him deflate when I told him I went through there flat in the damp.
Poor bastard never got within 2 seconds a lap of me the rest of the meeting. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif I was chasing a certain C. Lowndes for most of the race.
Have Channel 7 video of me going off that turn backwards @ 215km/h at another meeting trying to go round someone  Nearly ended up in the wall. Also had a huge tank slapper at Macphillamy Park once. Had non adjustable Sachs shocks and too stiff springs, not enough rebound and with nil droop on the rear... 8O the frigging car just started bouncing and around it went. I just pulled my knees up and waited for the thump.....somehow it didn't. This was after running clean over the back wheels of a mate earlier in practice after he bracked hard to miss a wally who was spinning in front of him. Went about 3-4 feet up in th air according to witnesses. The landing wasn't pretty and the car wasn't happy. Back to the pits on a flat top.
Basically every corner of every track we used to spear off. I lost count of the number of times I'd been off at Oran Pk. Funny thing is, all of a sudden you stop spinning, smooth out and actually go quicker. Something just finally gets sorted out in the computer up stairs. You are still absolutely over the edge all the time, yet have time, it's a weird, wonderful sensation.
Back in those days, we all firmly believed in Trev's sig... 8)

funny thing is, these days I hardly ever go over 100 clicks, and often just cruise around at 90.
Damn, I must be getting old......
I also like this old racers saying..
"the older I get, the faster I was..."
you can take that on a number of levels.

I have been the same, if i am in a hurry i speed a bit, but most of the time i sit on around 95. Maybe its because it helps the fuel economy i dont know. Matt

This whole topic is a pet hate of mine. The authorities just love it because it generates lots of revenue. The actual effect on the road toll is so small as to not be measurable. There is even some argument that it causes accidents by increasing fatigue and inattention.. the biggest killers on our roads (closely followed by drink driving).
In reality, the road toll has stagnated in recent times. Modern safer cars and better roads are the only thing that has kept the toll down. People in little vans on the side of the road don't save lives... they collect taxes.
The way the governments have conducted themselves is very smart. By using some of their windfall and pumping that back into commercial media through advertising they have effectively bought the press and in the process had a really good attempt at making speed NON-PC.
So, in my reality I always drive at a speed I think is safe, and will not get me a ticket. Most of the time I'm around the limit or just a little bit more. In bad weather or complex traffic conditions I reserve the right to vary that infinatly between stationary and whatever is necessary. I'm the guy that everyone cuts in on too.
As to the top speed I've been at .. well about 190 in the MINI. It was in the middle of no where, the road was high quality and empty, and very safe. The MINI was in sixth and was so comfortable on the road that neither of my passengers even woke up.. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif We had stacks more to go too 8O
These guys are a really good bunch of fellows who stand for common sense in the face of the govenment brainwashing $$$.

The hill climb was not on the straight stretches to the 'bungles. No doubt the duc's could beat the Alfa hands down on the straight but on the twisty uphill the Alfa had the advantage of four wheels on the road but not at 180 km/h 8O style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif

Mmmm - the Jags ....
Many years ago, my brother, father and I drove my Jag V12 from Perth to Brisbane non-stop. Despite all the cries of "she'll never make it", "unreliable pommy crap" etc from the masses, we did it in 39 hrs, without missing a beat! We sat on around 150mph (240kph) chasing a Kawasaki through the back roads into Queensland - had to keep slowing down for the wash-aways (the car was low, even for a Jag!) - but we both thoroughly enjoyed it style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif
My father flew back to Perth, whereas my brother and I took a much more leisurely trip back through the Gold Coast - being young and single 8)
