Hi guys, new member here, so I guess I'll start with an automotive introduction. A couple of years ago I had a 300tdi, which was good right up until it it 470,000km, and just needed a plethora of stuff done. When the head gasket went for the 3 time and it overheated like I've never seen before, it was time to bid farewell. Fast forward to this year, and I started looking for a td5. I went all the from mornington to mildura trying to find a good one for a reasonable price. In the end I settled for this, a 2003 TD5 Discovery, for $9600.00 with 182,000km on the clock.

For 13 days, it was fantastic. I'd found one with less than 200,000km, less than $10,000.00, with a rwc, with a full service history, without rattles, it. was. great. But on that 13th day, while it was parked on the side of the road in front of my parents house, someone drove into the front of it.

Both parties were with RACV, whom I well NEVER use again. There was a repaired chip in the windscreen that passed the roadworthy, but cracked in the hit. The simply refused to replace it. The day I got the car back, It had the 3 amigos going. They refused to fix it. So after weeks of arguing with the inspector, I caved. I gave up and started fixing it myself. Starting with the 3 amigos.

I hooked a scan tool up to it with said shuttle valve electrical fault, so I replaced the shuttle valves. While doing so, I noticed a whole lot of loose bolts on the panels that had been replaced. I'm sure I still haven't got them all. 3 amigos went away... ...for 4 weeks, now they're back with the same fault, which seems a bit sus to me.

Now the front shockers are noisy as hell, I still haven't had the windscreen replaced, (but I just got my tax return so that'll happen soon) and the rattles are driving me insane! The timing sucked as well - I'd just lost my job over a hernia (contractor, they can do what they want) and I haven't found work again yet. So I bought my lovely Land Rover, then got a hernia and lost my job, then some idiot drove into the front of the discovery I'd spent months looking for.

I'm pretty sure I'm gonna be chasing rattles for a very long time, and I'm gonna have to replace the windscreen, shockers... oh and the maf, fuel pump and fuel filters... But any help you guys could offer on the 3 amigos would be greatly appreciated.

I've had a look around the forums the first time the problem was fixed, so I'm not meaning to double up on threads, I just need some help. Thanks.

That's hard having the three things hit you pretty quickly - especially after finding such a good vehicle.

I'm not the one to ask about the 3 amigos fault but I am sure there will be others who can help you - it's that kind of a forum.

All the best.

Sorry to hear of your woes.
Option b will fix the amigos and will cost you next to nothing. A new screen can be had for as little as $200 for non genuine.

Thanks for the advice, I'll look into option b, although I'm having a bit rouble finding it at the minute. I might pop the switches out and check the resistance as well, and make sure all the wires are tight in the plug. I sprayed some inox in there, and that seemed to prolong the time without them, but I do need to fix it.

This is a really good forum, much more helpful and active than I was anticipating.

Behind the left hand headlight, on the engine bay side, you will find 2x 10mm earth studs. Check these are in good condition following the accident and repair work.
There are further earth studs on the drivers side inner guard, though not directly ABS related.
Trace the ABS sensor wires back from the hub and make sure these are not damaged from the smash and/or repair work.
Inside near the SLABS, BCU,behind the glove box on the passenger side kick panel- check the earth stud also.
This will at last confirm its not related to the repair work.
From here if no joy, follow the already posted links.

RE the Rattles, if they did guard work check the in wheel arch plastic panels are correctly fitted , also the mud guard indicator cables just hang inside there and could be make a noise if the bounce around.

I checked out the slabs and relevent stuff the first time through - checked for connectivity through the harness as well. I haven't looked at those earths behind the headlight though. That light's out at the minute, so may as well have a peak when I change the globe. Thanks for the tip.

The inner wheel arch is held on with cable ties. I've ordered some clips and will get on it soon. They didn't even tighten the bolts on the bull bar properly, and it has slanted forward and is hard against the fenders.

Didn't think there'd be someone on here from mooroolbark! Sorry I haven't replied yet, been a bit busy. Any chance you could flash the ecu for me one day? You know... After I've finished sorting theough all the issues. Also, mine's a green one. There is another one, some colour same spec and all the visits my street regularly, then there is a white disco to around the corner, and a black v8 disco one around the corner from there. It's like as soon as mine got hit, the area got flooded with discoveries. Mooroolbark seems to be full of them now, wonder if they're on here to.

Plan B seems to have done the trick! Used the original switches, so now I have 2 spare sets, one of them's only about 2 weeks old. Oh well, I'm sure they'll come in handy. Covered all the wires with conduit, and used a plug from jaycar, so nothing looks put of place. Although, I'm considering moving the earth to the earth wire in the harness.

Another issue I don't think I'd mentioned was that the car had a tendency to, well, almost bunny hop whenever I got remotely close to flooring it, and especially recently, my fuel economy has been abominable. I replaced the maf, thought about just cleaning it but when I took it out I thought I may as well replace it because it looked as old as the car, and is one less thing to worry about. That cured the bunnyhopping, but I'm not sure how my fuel economy's going at the minute. I'd like to do a full tank and see how it goes, buuuuttttt.....

Fill it over 3/4 and it ****es fuel either side of the tank. I can only assume either the o-ring on the fuel pump has carked it at an annoyingly coincidental time, or somehow the breather has come out. My new fuel pump (NOT LUCAS!) is coming either tomorrow or Monday, (the one I've got now is unusually noisey, and I don't want to be stuck on the side of the road because I ignored it)

Service kit arrived today, as well as some universal fit except discoveries frameless windscreen wipers. Which considering the ad specifically said 1999 to 2004 discovery 2, is very annoying. I'd like to get a fuel filter and trans filter as well, and just do the lot. Already blead the brakes though, so that's one thing down.

Today I also put in a 3 12v power socket thingo behind the panel under the steering wheel, mainly so I can have the plug for my dashcam tucked away out of sight, and still be able to charge my phone without having to unplug anything. I think I might put in a relay there though, so that when I get a uhf, and egt guage and a boost guage, I've got a good place to connect them up to.

Again, thanks for all the advice. It looks like plan b was the way to go, and it also looks like my tax return is going to run out before my shopping list does. Bugger.

Fascinating!! Mario is in Tecoma, and I'm in Sassafras, with a Nanocom for your car no less... Not that I know how to use it yet. Maybe you could be the guinea pig....

Could be good. I want to see how my fuel economy stacks up first though. As in there may still be gremlins to sort through.

Plan b has worked a treat on my brakes though. Very nearly went up someones bum. They dropped the anchors in a hatch, just glad I was paying attention.
