Just drained my 72 diesel tank. The fuel looks like an english bitter, smells vaguely of diesel but nothing like the servo stuff.

That looks more like filtered waste vegetable oil than diesel.

How old is the fuel. Looks like it's been sitting in there for a long time.

Fuel looks like it's on the way out due to bacteria. Treat the tank with a fuel biocide to stop the bug from growing.

Car is of unknown providence. Not sure how long it has been sitting. I am doing a full rebuild so the system should be cleaned and recharged. Actually smells more like a n m113 bilge

Off diesel has a peculiar smell, like old mineral paint. Good diesel should look like a light beer, not dark like a heavy beer.

Old diesel seems to change it's smell a bit but it still burns fine unlike old petrol. I would try it first before ditching it.

I wouldn't chuck it. I'd strain it through a medium mesh and mix it with some new and re-use.
cheers,

Years ago I bought my diesel in bulk (44gal drums). It seemed oily to the touch and honey coloured. Now it seems as thought it is "watered"down, thin and colourless.

A chux cloth folded 4 times makes a good filter medium.

Is the inside of the tank rusty?

Cheers, Mick.

No. All looks pretty good. The filters have certainly done their job, but they are all cactus now - full of grey goop.
