Hi everyone
Cut a long story short, I revved her (87 RRC EFI, 23D) and let go which made a rather splendid crackle along with a couple of backfires. (New exhaust).
Now she wouldn't start but I got her going but it made no difference where the throttle was at.
Next I undid the dizzy cap hard around and she started and stayed idling so I crept home at 30Km/h max.
So, I reckon I've jumped timing.
Am going to get a timing light tomorrow, but need to know how to get it roughly in tune before I start with the gun.
Also, there is no smoke or strange noises etc
Any chance of some ideas?
Cheers
Dave

Find TDC on the front pulley and confirm it by sticking a small screw driver down no.1 spark plug hole and rocking the crank past TDC. Lift the dissy cap and see that the rotor is pointing at no.1 lead or 180 degrees the other way. Use a short piece of heater hose and try to blow into no.1 plug hole with the engine a few degrees before TDC. If air blows in you're 1 turn out from TDC, then turn the engine 1 turn clockwise. If air bounces back at you then it should be on the firing stroke. Look under the rotor button to the pickup and line up the nearest tooth of the the star rotor with the pickup. If you can't turn your dissy far enough to line up everything you may have skipped a tooth on the timing chain meaning front cover off.

Why would the timing jump ? I'd be concerned the dizzie drive also drives the oil pump (like it does in some engines).

Could a backfire damage the flapper? I think I've heard of this happening before? If so, anyone know what damage could be done? What sort of values should you get off one that is working if you stick a meter on it?

Yes ,as Gav suggests , i`d look at the flap movement and throttle plate/cable as a second .
If the flap doesn`t move there is no air movement which would give idle and no revs .
It would also go with no odd noises .
Advancing the timing if as done would up the idle .
It would still start and work to a point after the timing chain jumped a tooth , being what they are .

I had a mechanic friend look at it and he reckons the dizzy is buggered.
I can't find any local at all, found one in Adelaide for $320
eBay are horrendously priced (I saw at least 2 in excess of $1200!!)
Anyone got a spare that I can buy or borrow? I have to get this back on the road as it's my daily driver :(

Is a 3.5 carby one the same? If so, you're welcome to the one out of my 85 that's under my bench. Running when I pulled the motor out, condition otherwise unknown.

I just you a huge PM then my computer farted and I lost the whole post.
I dunno if the SU dizzies are any different to the early EFI flapper one.
It's been running rich (*I knew that lol*) and plug #1 backed me up as it was black as coal!
I'm gonna take some pics of my dizzy and send them onto you, hopefully yours will be the saviour!
Thanks again Gav

If the 87 has the amp under the coil it will be the same 2 wire as the 85
If the 87 amp is on the distributor the wiring will need some work .

Thanks Peter
What does the amp look like? (Am more used to Duraspark lol)
She's sitting mournfully in my neighbours driveway as she didn't have enough oomph it to get up my driveway.

The one under the coil looks like an aluminium rectangular box maybe an inch high , which i suppose could be mistaken as a mount for the coil .
The dissy mounted one is on the side near the power steering pump it will have a small loom going to it and is maybe 1/2inch wide and black in colour it is much smaller than the undercoil one .

Fix it, it's a mechanical device. The most common problem is when someone yanks off the rotor button and dislodges the advance springs. Procedure detailed here:

I would if I knew how to, even with the instructions.
The thing is she was running fine, just died after I gave the throttle a bit of a goose to 4000rpm then let go, I wasn't hammering it or holding it at a high rpm or anything.
Now one thing I noticed yesterday- when I sucked on the vac line that goes to the mechanical advance/retard nothing happened- I thought that the metal rod inside the dizzy was supposed to move?

If you can use a Drill, and a spanner, then you can rebuild the dizzy yourself.
It's not expensive. It IS straightforward and simple.

If you really don't think you can rebuild it yourself, but are in Melbourne eastern suburbs take the dissy to Scorcher in Norcal Rd Nunawading. They do good work. (I run one of their upgraded distributors on my D1) I have a 3.5 motor in the shed which I think has a distributor on it - not sure which type. You are welcome to borrow it if it is the right one.

Hi guys....
Gav dropped around a 85 dizzy (SU variant) and we fitted it while is was bucketing down with rain.
My mechanic dude did have to switch the 2 pin connectors to make them match but at least it wasn't the 4-pin one.
Anyways, hats off to Gav- I now have a working RRC again - yippee!!!
Now I can go give the Arabs lots of money for petrol haha
The plugs are really black so it's definitely running rich, so that will be the next thing to look at.
Again, thanks for everyones help
Cheers
Dave
