After 2 very near misses on saturday I want to instal a crash cam.I came close to being messed up in 2 crashes that were nothing to do with me.
I want a good one,Blackvue is what I have in mind.I dont really need a rear cam but I guess that would be handy too.I dont know how the missile comming in from behind with all 4 wheels smoking didnt get me as I was braking to avoid the **** going down in front of me on the freeway.

I've just fitted a Vicovation Opia2, takes pretty good video, night and day time.

I have the Blackvue in the D4, but front camera only. Have been very pleased with it. If you have a Traxide DBS installed, wire it to permanent power and it acts as a security camera for when you are not in the vehicle as well. Goes to "sleep" when the car hasn't been moved for a while, but is activated by movement.
Shaun has the same system, but with both front and rear cameras, in his Amarok. He is also pleased with his.
Would highly recommend them - but they are definitely not the only good one out there. I like the size and shape of the cameras themselves. Very discrete and easy to tuck up out of the way. Both of our front cameras are up behind the rear view mirror. ;) From outside the car, you can't see that there is a camera there until it activates and a light starts flashing at you - by then, your photo has been well and truly captured.

If they've flogged the car or camera, taking their picture isn't much help. :D

Yes but I wish I'd had the camera when some mongrel pinched my light bar a while back.:censored:

what's the difference between a "crash camera" and a go pro?

I think the crash camera is like a dashcam - something that sits on the dash or stuck to the window of your vehicle or something like that - were as a Go-Pro sits on your hat - for Cyclists or Skateboarders etc - I guess both would do similar things.

Dash cam stops and starts with ignition, not sure if Go pro would do that.

And a dash cam records everything in 3-5 minute files, which is good for a dash cam but is a pita when using it as a trip recorder and you have dozens of files at the end of the day.

I have a Garmin GDR 45. It has a port for a rear camera, can be set up to record when the car is stopped. Monitors the battery voltage and will turn off if it gets to low. Mine is hooked up to the cigar lighter via multi socket so it stops and starts with the ignition.
Plays back in 3 or 4 minute length files and records GPS and speed. Also has an automatic snap shot if it detects a sudden stop or crash.
Available on EBay.

the op said crash cam , not dash cam.
I know what a go pro is and my mate has one permanently mounted , not on his hat but on his dash.
So, is your "crash cam" running at all times just like my mates go pro.....if so what is the difference?

you could start here...
Techmoan - Techmoan - Dashcam Review: DDPai M6+ is the best mini cam I've?used (http://www.techmoan.com/blog/2016/6/23/dashcam-review-ddpai-m6-is-the-best-mini-cam-ive-used.html)
I'd suggest you consider '1296-P' resolution, at least for a front-facing camera. 1080 is ok, but once you've used 1296 . ..
I've currently got an Xiaomi like this, but I think mine is "Original" (cheaper).
- And it needs a Chinese nerd with the software and a smartphone to set the correct Time and Date... Dunno about the 'International' version below...
Optical quality/sharpness and reproduction is very good indeed, regardless of price-point. I would buy another one.
Also, a cheapy for permanent REAR mounting is a good idea, and would tend to intimidate the tail-gater...

Here's a CAPACITOR version (Battery versions can have a shrt life in extreme (WA) heat...

and this is the 'Techmnoan' recommended one :- http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Yoko-Facial-Recognition-Fingerprint-Time-Attendance-Payroll-Manager-Time-Clock-/272225756081'tfrom=272310470856&tpos=top&ttype=price&talgo=undefined
I used to have one of these, but "executed" it by mistake when it continually beeped at me.... turned out to be a faulty SD card. Quality was equally as good as the Xiaomi, which is very good in low light. - Late evening still reproduces with a bright sky and good detail elsewhere...

To my way of thinking, if I were removing your lightbar and I saw that flashing light, all that that would mean is that I had another job to do before I vacated the scene.

Mark.
Im leaning to the Blackvue with built in GPS/wifi/128gig card, probably single cam.
I realise they fit them up at the mirror to hide them.Im thinking of fitting it to the Kuda mount.Am I going to get enough depth mounting it low.
Cheers

A purpose built "Dashcam" or "crashcam" differs from a GoPro type in that they tend to loop record, Ie when they reach the end of the mem card they start from the beginning again. They also have a "G"sensor that will shut the camera down in the event of an impact so the footage of the crash is not lost or written over. This will also turn the cam on if you have been parked and an impact occurs to the car. Mine turns on if I slam the tailgate! 32 gb card records from home to Brisbane and about a 1/3 of the way home before it overwrites again.

Would mounting it low on the dash risk cooking it as it gets very hot on the lower dash on a hot day?

Worth considering Chris.
I have low voltage protected power in the rear thru the Traxide. Now looking at running the power supply to the Kuda mount back to that.I guess its not that hard to fit the Blackvue up top and still run it off the power I feed to the Kuda. That way I dont need to buy their hard wire or battery kit as it already exsists with the Traxide.
I will add switches on the Kuda so I can switch off its power or leave it live to the aux battery. No need to leave the system running when the D4 is locked in the shed.

The black view in my work van is low other wise it just picked up the dash reflection and handles the heat no prob, also the heavy duty fire truck , both other are under the mirror

I think mounting it low will likely result in more bonnet and dash being recorded than road. Having it mounted high also means it can be angled down slightly helping to reduce the effect of the sun shining into the lens.

Anybody got the DR650 or similar Blackvue????
They say you can only use their 128gb memory card. They want $180,which is way overpriced.
Will normal good quality 128gb cards work????

The installation files etc for the camera / program set-up for your computer are on the SD card that comes with it. That's why they say that you must use their SD card. Once you have everything set up though, there's no reason you can't use another good quality card. I have done this with mine.
Also, you could probably copy the content from their card to a new one if you wanted to.

I rang the importer today, who is in Perth. They said to call a dealer,I did,The radar direct people. Most unhelpful. We dont discount the price as we import them, said they are cheaper on Ebay, told me to get one there:mad::mad::mad::mad:.Asked about the card, you can only use ours:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:
Just rang Auto 1 Cannington, they are listed as a dealer.Got them on special for $369 with the 16gb card.Asked about a 128gb card, dont stock them, told me go to Harldy Norman and copy the 16gb card contents onto the 128gb,it works:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D
