View Full Version : LWB tub to trailer viable?

Investigating options for a trailer I followed a lead on this forum (thanks p38arover) for an expired ebay auction. I now have an option on a lwb lr tub body. tailgate etc but no chasis Would there be any links to whats involved in turning one of these into a trailer and approximate costs involved. Do custom trailers need engineers certificates in QLD?

I could do some stuff myself but my welding skills are very minimal and whilst I would welcome an excuse to buy more tools style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif I curently dont own any heavy metal fab equipment beyong a pair of tin snips

Id be hoping to use other recycled parts axles, springs etc if possible

The other options are a new medium duty 7*4 for around $1k or second hand from $400 but Id much prefer a custom LR job.

If it all works out I'll post up the results

cheers

8) well its not impossible,
there is a fellow who goes around the swap meet circuit with exactly what you want to do with your tub.
he flogs pommie car electrics. the trailer is a landy series tub [don't know what model] and it runs on [i presume] rover car wheels, as he tows it with an old 3500 rover car [or something similar], so i presume he uses the same wheels as the car.
as for engineering cert. ' last time i registered a trailer i was given a plate to engrave 'trailer home made maker unknown' even though i made it.
just need a roadworthy cert.

8) and if you don't want it maybe i might 'if the price is right'

Its definitely possible, there was a SWB tub trailer on ebay a while ago, the guy wanted $250 for it. But people make their own trailers all the time, as long as the frame underneath is structually sound i dont see a problem. Wouldnt have the foggiest on how to go about it, but i want make a trailer with the old tub on my SWB project as i am getting a better one, so i would be interested in anything you find out. Matt

Bastard! I wanted that! But Brissie was just too far away. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif

I hope you got it cheap - it was on for $50 and had no bids.

I look forward to pix as I'd like to do the same thing. It'd look good behind my County.

I still love this trailer.... just needs a nice tool box on the front A bar or another spare and it would look pretty cool then.....

How funny would it be if u left the back seats in trailer, u could take more passengers style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif or if u had kids say to them that if they are naughty your going in the back (trailer style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif)

Anyhow think this would be a bit heavy to tow .....

Mate I was after that tub too. Contacted the ebay sellers but they never got back to me. Now I know WHY.

I'd love to know how much you did have to shell out for it.

I wanted it to fit to my ute, assuming that it has the same mounting points as a Defender Ute (which someone may be able to tell me).

Looks like they have kept the LR diff and running gear, cut it in half, reinforced it and sealed it and just welded a draw bar on it. Also looks like they have also just run overrun brakes to the original LR ones... pretty cool. Also pretty cool because u could leave the petrol/diesel tank in place and u don't need to carry jerry cans !!!

How heavy do u think it would be :?:

Now who has a wrecked disco that I can have style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif

I wonder what it weighs?

In NSW, trailer rego is very expensive for heavy trailers. Been there.

This was recently on Overlander forum (not much good off-road but, jeez, it looks good):

Marshall seems to be cheapest on axles but you may want to check out Camec on Rocky Point Rd they have a bit of stuff there. I've picked up cheap wheels/tyres, water tank and heavy duty springs off Ebay. Just need to get my chassis sorted now

8) i just don't understand.
why bother.
and what would the authorities think?
imagine a sudden need to avoid something
jack-knived by a pusher trailer
the cops would have a ball

1. He's a nut.

2. Electric car, sometimes he uses the pusher/trailer to charge the batteries.

3. He's a nut.

4. It's America, they don't believe in road safety.

5. From his description, because the wheels on the trailer are drive wheels they tend to point straight ahead, he's one of the few who has actually tried it, so he must know.

6. He cut up a diesel golf for the thing.

None of this is the weird thing. The weird thing is that he controls a diesel car engine from all the way up front. He has detailed descriptions of all of it.

If you want a real scare look at his LPG fumigation project.

7. He's a nut.

IF it doesn't suit I'll onsell it.

I do';t need a chassis (the Defender already has one style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif )

Now how to get the damn thing from Cedar Grove Heights, Queensland 4285 to my place at Redcliffe.

Anyone have a car trailer I can borrow ? Or happen to be passing that way on the way to this way, with their truck ?

It wouldnt fit on the trailer I dont think - its bigger I think !
Also I'd have top unbolt all my toolboxes from the tray which might be OK BUT getting enoiugh muscle to lift it that high might be problematic. I reckon even without the chassis it ain;t going to be no featherweight !

Just for comparision, maybe not even close, someone mentioned that a 130 tub was light/heavy enough for a two person lift with a bit of strain. Around 100kg was the guess.

How about a winch and a couple of planks?
