View Full Version : TD5 Starter motor on a 300TDI

hi all.


will a TD5 starter motor fit on a 300TDI motor? looking on Ebay some sellers say they will. I like the newer Denso style motors as they are less susceptible heat. they are also smaller, lighter and often use gear reduction.


I there meant to be a heat shield on the starter as it's mighty close to the nice hot turbo and exhaust.'

I've only just replaced my original starter after 18 years with a UK import for $150 so I personally don't see a need to stress over it,I would not fit a Denso starter if I was you. Pat

my engine has a VNT and aftermarket exhaust manifold. the exhaust snail is facing the rear of the engine and the exhaust pipe runs past the starter, that's why I'm worried about heat.

I'm with Pat,
keep it simple, my starter is 20 years old and still going strong.

If your concerned about heat you can wrap the pipe, or put an alloy heat shied on it. My exhaust is wrapped all the way back to the first muffler. First with fiberglass tape then aluminium tape. Very cool in the engine bay and the passenger side floor.

I bought a new toy yesterday an IR temp gun, below is some temperatures after driving around to the shops etc for 30 minutes etc.

ambient temp about 24 degrees.

axle hubs 32-35, front diff 30, rear diff 35, transfer case 45, gearbox 55, engine sump 70 deg.
Turbo outlet casing, at idle cool down, 135.
Changed the oil yesterday to Penrite 15-50 semi synthetic, very good oil pressure, about 2.5 bar at idle , 3 to 3.5 while driving around.

Hi Pat, yes its great, the garret 2256 VNT is a great turbo and widely used on 2.5 liter diesels. With the upgraded APT intercooler, and a few tweeks on the fuel pump, she goes well. Its the car the tdi should have been when it was made I think. The boost is set to max 1.5 bar, though I rarely go over 1 bar.
The VNT delivers boost from low down and has widened the torque curve, the car is a lot easier to drive on road and off. I seem to be doing a lot less gear changes. Exhaust temps rarely above 500 deg c. (mostly less than 400). I love the simple tdi engine, and vnt improvements, ( done over a couple of years), have kept the car capable and relevant. I've just rebuilt a disco 2 TC to go in it, because I'm confident it can make use of the higher gearing. I'm just chasing down a rear drive flange from a Td-5 defender. Then to build and electric motor test rig, so I can run it before I fit it, to give it a flush and check the noise and temperatures etc. The plan is to drive the TC case from the output side using a short drive shaft, & 2 hp electric motor. Progress is slow though, working for a living disrupts my hobbies :) cheers simmo
