I spotted a 2003 HSEL322 on Car sales, 105Kms, dealer asking $28K plus extra for ORC.
112576

112577
Thought Heather and I should go an have a look to see what this sort of money buys. Having little experience with this model.

Body was very straight, climbed under and it looked like it had never been off road, very original and clean underneath until I looked at the front suspension arms and noticed some black oil drops clinging.
The dealer said he had only just got the vehicle in and hasn't fixed stuff yet and it will be fixed for the RWC.
( I have heard this all too much before, a quick degrease and its fixed.) he said it was probably only a rocker cover gasket.
Yes that might be all it is, but without him pulling off the top engine cover to show me we will never really know.
Interior, I wasn't too keen on the cream interior on the doors and dash, I can see fishing trips ruining this.
Besides that the HSE spec radio was not there it had an upholstered and an elcheapo dial radio was fitted.
Dealer said they had a radio on order from Adelaide ( probably TRS) and were thinking of fitting it.

The drivers side seat belt did not retract freely.
Te plastic trim with the silver coating was blistering ans falling off in places.
The centre console either side of the gear shift leaver was split and cracked very badly. Visually I am fussy on stuff like that and was a turn off to me.

The other worrying thing was the dash displayed the wording AIR SUSPENSION INACTIVE.
This was an alarm bell to me, the dealer said he was aware of this and hadn't had a chance to put nay diagnostics on it.

We took it for a drive, i haven't driven one before, but to me it sounded very noisy when accelerating, like a TD5 that had its cat and muffler removed. I know the vehicle is 13 years old, but I would have thought for a luxury vehicle it would have been a tad quieter.
The vehicle was a Gold Coast purchased vehicle that had a land rover dealer service to 50k then at 100k it had some non land rover service bloke do it. So with 105ks on the clock I would have expected more specialist Land rover serving

I told the dealer after I returned from the test drive it was not the vehicle for me.

Am I being to fussy? but parting with nearly $30k after all ORC for a vehicle that just doesn't feel look like with 105kms to me?

I must admit I like a roominess in the L322 compared to the Disco2
Advise appreciated.
Cheers, Mario

Another question, the plastic trim on the dash etc, on the woodgrain jobs is this fake wood and is it sevicable?

No, it's real wood, and all the bits come off if you wanted to refinish them. There are some after market bits that you can get from Powerful UK, some of these are plastic.

The diesels do make more noise than you may think, they aren't super quiet, but only really noticeable on acceleration. They are quieter once cruising at any speed. The V8's are smoother and quieter on acceleration, but you pay the price at the servo. If the V8 fuel economy doesn't bother you, I'd be more inclined to get one.

There's no reason to modify the exhaust on either model, so if the one you've driven has had this done, I'm not sure why and I would look at driving a stock vehicle to get a comparison.

The one I just sold had just over 220,000KM on it and was still very tight, smooth and free of rattles or squeaks, so if you drive one that isn't id question how well it's been maintained.

If you need someone to tag along with you to let you know how it drives compared to how it should, let me know, I'll happily help out. I've driven over a dozen of them now all up - some good, some not so good.

Thanks Home Star That's good to know. I see there are also different specs on HSEs the one I looked at had head light washers, so I presume they may have had the Xeon headlights? but other Hse's don't, also some have screens on head rest backs and other don't.

Yeah, there's actually heaps of differences even within the same model group. The HSE has options that would bring it up close to the Vogue (apart from the seats I think), so Xeon headlight, the comfort pack (sunroof, etc) and the entertainment systems can all vary depending on what the original customer purchased. :)

IMHO it's too much money.

JC picked up a facelift 2005 model with 115,000km & Xenon lights for not much more.

I would go a facelift with km commensurate with a 11 year old car if it had a complete history.

Or get a facelift v8 petrol if you want power and that quiet lux feel. However you've ruled out a petrol.

The next step up is a tdv8 which is a beautifully balanced & quiet motor with bucket loads of power and torque, but lots more money. Unless it's got a squillion km like mine.

They might be wood on the Vogue, but the 'wood' on my 2002 build diesel HSE is definitely plastic. I've had the dash ends off many times when replacing the radio, and have had the relevant bits in my hands. They're nicely done though, doesn't bother me at all.

Plastic wood would probably disguise stuff better than bubbling, peeling and patch silver.

My Cherry parts on my 03 HSE were definately real wood. As I said, there are some aftermarket plastic bits around. I've refinished one of the dash ends on my old one - wood all the way. Not sure what finish you have though. There is a small amount of epoxy where they are bent at the corners. The wood is overlaid over a plastic panel underlay.

Did a 100kms round trip to have a look at another HSE, the guy wanted 27K for 185kms on clock. Arrived at property and it was a horse agistment, not far from the Rangie was a horse float. Owner told me he had never had the Auto serviced. Hmm heavy towing and no auto service. the Vehicle was very dirty, quite a few scratches in the paint work, I would have thought if your selling a car a good wash and detail would be in order for that sort money.
I opened the door and there was a strong smell of cigarettes being a non smoker it immediately turns me off cars. I don't care how well they are detailed I've always found smoke smell is always there.
I opened the bonnet and the engine was covered in dust and there were cobwebs in the panels. Ist impressions are lasting. Owner asked if I would like him to start the engine. That's when I politely told him this was not the vehicle for me.
The vibes weren't there saying buy me.

I did a Redbook check on prices on 2003 HSE L322s Diesels.

Valuation Prices
*Private Price Guide $15,900 - $18,800 *Trade In Price Guide $10,700 - $13,600 *Average Km 195,000 - 325,000 *Price When New $119,900* Price Guide (EGC)

G`day ,

the above is at Grays , the Cranbourne side of Dandenong , i know nothing of it , just saw it on the net .

When i did a History and PPSR check part of the info is " similar sales " but it doesn`t actually say diesel or petrol .

100,000km $10,500 .
121,000km $10,000 .
144,000km $29,990 .
197,000km $25.990 .

There are more but i would think the 2 lower would be private the 2 higher would be dealer and these are 2003 HSE .

In my experience , price and condition have little to do with anything at a dealer unless they are the type like Ritters and Deacon which both know the vehicles .
The average dealer knows the dollars they think they can get , the car has little to do with it .

Fuel costs and range is the issue for petrol with me. If i lived in Tassie wouldn't be a problem, plenty of fishing spots in stones throw:) I would so never need to travel far. But here, everything is further so fuel costs to consider.:(

I ended up with a 2009 MY10 TDV8 but was also keen on a 2006-2008 V8 supercharged petrol.
The Jag V8 and better transmission was the reason.
I was worried about fuel usage but if you don't tow it's prob not too crazy.
The TDV8 isn't quite as efficient as the Disco 4 TDV6 diesel I had.
I currently use about 13l per 100 in the TDV8,
the petrol is probably around 20l per 100.
The disco was around 9l per 100.

The last Graysonline TDv8 Autobiography that ultimately went for north of $60k a few weeks ago apparently needed "$10k of engine work as would leak Oil everywhere".

My view with Grays is you either get a bargain or get a problem; and there is generally a reason why they are flogging these individual cars on Grays rather than through another channel. Also, and AFAIK, most finance repossessions go to Manheim - happy to be corrected. though.

Not trying to suggest anything about the specific car here, but would suggest a lot of due diligence on the car . :)

This is an older vehicle to what this dealers normaly carries, in fact it had bben sitting in his garage for over a month as they had no time to prepare it for sale.
There were 20 others land rovers there from Discos to Evoques , but late model stuff.
Put a deposit on it and picking it up on Wed. I was onlty listed today and had 3 enquiries already on it.
Oh the 20inch mags are being replaced with proper land rover wheels.

Yep, goes to show, presentation is everything. I can never understand people who buy these expensive cars and let them go. Mine has been to the Kimberley twice, many other long trips, and even after nearly 60,000km you'd struggle to pick it from one that's never done anything other than school runs.
The rule: fix ANYTHING and everything you'd want fixed if you were buying it, as it happens and when it happens, no matter the expense.
It always pays off at the other end.

Thanks mate.I was lucky on this one as he doesn't usually carry them this old. Milton told me that he has a good buyer to source his stock. we discussed the fact a lot of cars are coming from Qld. I brought up the flood discussion. He said when a car comes in , they take the door panels off and check for mud, if they find any it gets rejected.
Don't know if he was serious or tongue in cheek, but the couple I previously looked at where from QLD.
For the money why would any one bother to buy a Land Bruiser.

Well i drove it, have to gert used to actually having good vision and not looking at the top of the windscreen like the D2. Also great to be able to see all the dials on the dash and info on the information screen, not like the D2s with their hidden switches behind the steering wheel.
Takes a bit of getting used to not having great vision out the rear window with the head rests blocking the view.
When I took delivery and was about to drive off, I wasn't sure that the engine was running, I piushed on the accelerator peddle to check there was revs., Did the same at the Servo when I filled it up, i wasn't sure if it was running. They are so quiet!

Pretty stoked, I feel like the King of the road,:D
Still working my way around the controls.
When I got home, i had a problem :( I switched off and could still hear the heater fan running., it won't switch off.
I rang the dealer and he said sometimes the ignition key barrel doesn't release on these models, try the ignition keys wiggle to see if it stops. or if no good disconnect the battery so I don't have a flat in the morning.
I did that and fan stopped. I reconnected it for a few seconds and the fan didn't come back on. So let it disconnected until tomorrow. I spoke to dealer tonight and he said to bring it in to have them look at it.

Whilst I was at the dealer I had a sit in a sport, too snug for my liking, not as roomy as the L322, which says space. Sat in a D4 nice but again snug.
Evoque, not my cup of tea sorry. The L322 has that Yank tank roomy feel that appeals to me.

There's a lot going on with the electronics in these. Some of the fans can run for up to 5 minutes after you switch the car off and lock it. The fuel cooler fan will often run for a while, the engine fans only seem to run on on hot days and the interior will always make some noise. I wouldn't be too concerned about it, sounds normal to me.

Don't worry about the strange faint fan noises inside with the ignition off when you open the door in the morning - they do that too.

Lots of new noises to get used to. :)

I'm not sure with the older l322.
I know in my later model once I turn it off some stuff still runs until I lock it.
Not sure about the fans still running though.
There are def some computers and bits behind the dash that run and make noises.
Quite often after I stop everything times out about a minute or two later.
Sit in the car for 5 mins after you remove the key and see if it stops.
Or sit in the car and press the central locking key on the fob to lock it and see if it stops.

I did some googling.
some said due to electronics there are cooling systems to keep the buggers cool, just like a PC has fans.
Then there are others that say there was a Land Rover bullitan brought out for fans running hours and draining batteries over night.
There was a YNI500040K wiring kit and relay brought out to fix this problem.
Then others say the JGO000021 Regulator for Blower is the problem.
I just had to park it first so all family members could park behind me in case I block them in.

I tried to stop the fan by turning the knob in the cente of the dash that has the lights for speeds and Auto in the centre, when I turned it fully anti clock wise the fan really ran fast. Also it can be turned anti clock wise more, so is this buggered?

Just caught up on this thread.

You are dead right, being able to see the dash and switches is a revelation after a D2!

Love the wheels, what are they?

Cheers, Jerry

Hi Road Stone, I didn't love those wheels I am very conservative, so I had the dealer swap them for standard wheels.
I don't want people to see me driving around in them and thinking I'm the local pimp. too old to be a homie.:)
But the chrome grille looks schmick I think.

Ah, yeah, that is different, sounds like an actual problem. I'm sure they'll get that sorted for you no probs.

No problems with being standard, OE is by far the best. But they do look good with that colour.

the Vehicle had 2 owners, it has been serviced every 10,00kms by Land Rover dealers ships and then later by independent Land Rover shops up to the 160k log book, I will do the next scheduled service.
The previous owner had spent $10k on it looikng t the receipts for work done. that included fitting a new turbo $3000 for part, had the drain hose unblocked, failure was due to blocked crank case breather filter.
He paid a whopping $3000 of labour for that work with the service!.
If only he had a RAVE CD.
Then the rest was on suspension, air bags done and rear suspension parts.

The only niggles that I have to fix is, which is ok as the car is 13 years old 1.
is the Drivers seat Valance is cracked/split. I could probably remove it repair it and make a fiber glass clone? then it will last forever, or just buy another one in. Apparently these are common to break as people slide their bums off the seat without their feet touching the ground first.

2. The sun glasses holder on the roof console doesn't stay shut. I'll have to pull it off, it'll probably be a part on the cam has broken or slipped out of position, More aesthetics problem, if your anal like me.

3. The Sun roof blind is stuck? in the open position, doesn't really worry me but it would be nice to have that operational.

some pics.

Had a good look around the engine bay yesterday to familiarise myself for future servicing.

I'm Amazed on how much room there is to swing spanners.

The oil filter, looking up smiling at you and not hidden like the TD5:).What no injector loom bathed in oil like a TD5:)
Now if these 3litre engines could be transplanted to a D2:cool:

Looking at some vids amazed how easy it is to take the dash apart and un clip trim. May be they did it to save time for the techinicans for repetitive component replacement, I hope they didn't do it for the reason.;)

Pedro that's the passengers fold out cup holder, that's O.E.M

But I have already modified mine. If my fishing bubby smokes in my vehilce and he had a can of drink and pulls it, it opens up the sunroof and an exocet missile launches under his bum and ejects him out through the roof.:twisted::twisted::twisted::twisted: :twisted:

Yeah, cup holder - there's a really cool one that you can see folded away at the bottom RH side of the pic. You push it to unlatch it and it opens forward and down. Someone did a great job there. :)

Here you go Pedro, 112976 here is mine in action. Iy is tightly holding a skinny 200 mil coke can, so for all those sugar hit drinkers, it will safely hold a V or Redbull can also as well as the standard size cans.

Shane you have to be the guinea pig on that one and do a conversion. Don't forget the pics and the how to. It would be interesting reading.:)

Too late now - I've sold mine, no need for me to attempt it, but from the research I did, it was certainly doable.

Damn ... I don't like automatics.... Well the main thing I don't like is the day you put it in "D" and it doesn't move .... and will cost you more than the market value of the car to get it moving again :(

A proper gearbox I can just fix :)
