Rear Diff Clunk

Well after a bit of diagnosis or confirmation....

Lets start at the beginning. When I bought the Disco TD5 Auto it had a whining rear diff. - Replaced with good used diff no more whining. NOTE transfer case reseal & shim at the same time. Noted a little driveline clunk, well it had 230,000km.

About a year later A rear wheel bearing started to rumble. - replaced axle & bearing with good used one. Noted rumble & driveline clunk gone. :)

Lately the clunk has got more noticeable changing gears. Today I leaned on the Disco and rocked it back & forth on the hand brake and it clunks badly. Crawled underneath and rocked it and the rear diff centre clunks inside.

Diff is still nice and quiet, diff oil changed a couple of times since change and no metal noticed. I have read on here that the axle splines wear ( I have been towing a bit for work & holidays) and have been looking at Hy-tough (Maxi) rear axles. It now has 285,000km on it.

That's what I'm thinking rear axle splines? What do the knowledgable one's on here think am I on the right track?

Check the watt link bush's on the diff for wear. I had a mystery clunk and that's what it was. Can be quite hard to detect.

it might have lost its preload, they are a one time collapsible setting

Wont be the axle splines . The axles in a D2 are more than adequate in strength and reliability and do`nt wear:cool:

Well a little update. :angel:

I might have got it r r r r r wrong.

While rotating the tyres I gave the wheels a rock back and forth and it seems all my play is in the front end not the back.

check your front propshaft joints.....if they let go it will do a lot of damage.

Drive line play doesn't necessarily result in a clunk, just a sloppy driveline. Check your engine mounts and suspension bushes.

Check the front prop shaft double uni joint and the preload bush inside. Easy enough to do if you have a centre diff lock. Remove the shaft and lock the centre diff go for a REAR wheel drive.

Front drive shaft reconditioned & balanced by hardy spicer not long ago so feel safe it's not that.

Front axles have been out lately for ball joints and the CV's were smooth & tight (no play) while out.
