Hi all,
After some opinions on the D2 V8 auto. Looking at a 2001 as my sons first car, can possibly pick up for $3k (started wanting $6k then $4500). Body straight, mags, bull bar and tow bar but stock apart from that. Faded paint on bonnet and roof. Just over 200,000kms on the clock. Would like to go TD5 but doubles in price minimum and owners less likely to negotiate with the TD5. Seems pretty straight going for a look Wed.
Cheers
Craig

Hi Craig,
I have picked up two 2002 D2's for around the $3k mark, it is just a case of waiting for the right one to come along. If you are up for a bit of fixing work it's possible, I have bought one with a head gasket gone and one with a gearbox that requires a bit of effort.

I fixed the head gasket and have now been using one D2 for over a year it hasn't missed a beat. Cost about $1k to fix it up, worth every cent.

If you are going for a V8, why not, likes a drink basically suffers all the other usual LR Disco woes. Personally I would stay away from ones that have been converted to gas. Had a couple of V8's I bought gassed and took the gas off. I found them much more reliable without, my opinion.

Coming down from $6k to $3k that's a big drop, must been keen.

Cheers Marty

Thanks,
Yeah they now have 3 cars, motorbikes etc and 4 kids. Caught up with him today, he did say if it was a 7 seater he would not sell it. Started off at $6k, dropped to $4500 but accepted $3. Nothing major wrong with it at present that I can see. Bonnet and roof faded, head lining drooping and drivers door central locking actuator not working, bu that is all I can see. A few cans of plasti dip for the bonnet and roof maybe. Just to find someone to do the head lining or a kit. And then an actuator. Then CDL kit. Plus a stereo as still has cassette deck in it. Has Winch Bullbar (no winch) with fog lights and tow bar and Rola roof bars. So not to bad for $3k, spend another $1k and I think he will have a great first car. All the TD5s seem to be at least $5-$10k. Look like picking it up on Friday.
Anyone know of head lining kits in Australia? or anyone in WA that does a good job?
Cheers
Craig

Craig, haven't used him yet myself, (saving pennies for it) but comes recommended and I believe a bit cheaper than some others, so maybe worth a try.
Headlinings etc Western Auto Upholstery, Rhys Evans, 3/4 Flindell St O'Connor, 9331 8402, 0400 003 919

Prices can be anything from $300 up to $700.
$750 quoted by another for original look replacement for my LSE with sunroof.

Have been a couple of DIY posts on here, plus a couple who painted the interior - not a bad cheap starter, but could technically run foul of the law if pulled up.

They are great cars, albeit thirsty.

My advice, get the cooling system check out first/asap. Its their big weakness and an overheat, however short equals major tears.

I ran one in Lae PNG for 4 years, HSE, 390k on it and no issues given the heat and humidity, but I made sure the cooling system was A1.

Lovely vehicle and would get one again....one day!

Cheers, Jerry

Well looks like I am going to buy it for my son and his first registered car. Not perfect but for $3k I suppose pretty good. Will be picking up later Friday. Stereo and headlining will be tackled first.
At least for $3 not bothered if it gets a few marks.

After reading a couple of DIY's may give it a crack myself. Does not seem that hard.

Thirsty? Relative. I have been reading on AULRO that a TD6 RR full fat is averaging 14 litres per 100k...my 4.6 D2 manual gets 15.5 around town and it's lifted, roof rack, bull bar, sliders, bigger wheels etc. Plus have a look at what the Toyota 4wd are getting for diesels and petrols... Cheers
