View Full Version : What material is the puma exhaust made out of?

I bent my exhaust while offroad 3 or so weeks back, only just getting around to having it repaired on thursday.

The decorative tip of the exhaust that protrudes past the mudflap is slightly magnetic, whereas the rest of the exhuast system, including the mufflers is strongly magnetic. The latter appears to be fairly corrosion resistant.

What materials are we dealing with here? My thoughts are zinc plated steel and some kind of stainless steel for the tip? Maybe 409 grade?

If I can go armed with some info, it might help the exhaust guy.

Question for Bonus points:

For NSW, is having an exhaust outlet on LHS (passenger side) of vehicle, beyond the rear most opening window of the vehicle- Legal or not?

I've not been able to find any regulations or ADR's relating to the direction of exhaust other than for heavy vehicles. I'm ideally wanting the exhaust to be redirected out the LHS of the vehicle in front of the mudflap on the 90, so it stops melting...

It's all Stainless.

ADR states either sideways on DS or otherwise straight out at rear...

We just went with out on Left...

It's all Stainless.

Must be two different grades of stainless then. The rear pipe is about half as magnetic (real scientific, I know :p) than the main pipes and muffler cans. Different colour material too... although the heat of the exhaust would discolour it to some degree.

ADR 37 and 27a

Perfect. That will make some good reading to brush up on what's permissible and what's not so good.
I'd ideally like mine to exit a bit higher than your pic, out the left side. One day routing it thru the rear 1/4 panel would be awesome, but we shall see how it goes.

Just do it and be done with it.
Make sure it's flanged so you can fit a "compliant" piece if necessary.

Good thinking 99!

I'll be leaving the rear (small) muffler can out of the system. Firstly, I don't believe it changes much with the vehicle noise, and secondly, when I bent my exhaust, a sharp rock punctured a hole in the muffler can. Perfect excuse to leave it out of the system I say!

What ever its made of, it's tough.
I had my exhaust modified so it would clear my Stone Stomper mesh screen used between my 110 and my off road van.
It now faces downwards with a bevelled edge. I'm happy with the result, and it doesn't point exhaust fumes at traffic when at the lights etc.
