I am looking at getting the new Goodyear "armoured" tyre but the closest to fit my TD5 is the 235/85 R16 as opposed to the standard 235/70 R16. So what are the issues here? How will the larger tyre effect me? I have talked to 3 dealers now and it ranges from "no effect" to "disasterous" and "illegal"
Help!

235.85 X16 is a much bigger diameter tyre than a 235.70x16.
Tyres of the same diameter or legally close are 225.75x16 and 205x16 which is an 80 aspect ratio.
235.85x16 is generally called a 32 inch tyre while OEM is 29 inch.
I do not think they would physically fit without hitting and your gearing and speedo will be out by minimum 10% and they are illegal.
But hey that's never stopped a lot of guys on this forum!!! Just get the grinder out.

Defender or Disco?
If Defender 32's wont be a problem. Just adjust the steering lock stops.
Disco is a different story. Some trimming of the guards as well as steering adjustment.

Hi Murray,
What are these?
Bulletproof? All steel radials with heaps of steel?
Cheers

The Goodyear Wrangler now has two steel belts and a KEVLAR belt as well as re-inforced sidewalls.
I was looking at the Cooper STT's but they are a tyre hard as rock and not a comfy ride and the ST isn't as good in side wall protection. Every tyre I have done in has been through side wall damage. Any one recommend any other tyres with good side wall protection? MTR'S are a bit like the STT and very aggressive. I do a lot of normal road driving so a really agressive tyre is out.

Hey, Have a look at this http://www.beadell.com.au/tyre_information.htm
They have some interesting ideas about tyres, particularly if you have stake problems.

Thanks for that an informative site. Is it any wonder that tyres are a most contentious issue around camp fires. Trouble is at approx $200 a shot once you got em you are virtually stuck with em for a long while.

Tell me about it, It took me waaay too much time on the internet weighing up options before I went out and got some.
Loved the idea of the 14ply all steel radials - bulletproof.
But then almost impossible to get onto a fixed rim wheel, and the tread business, although there are more agressive treads than just highway grooves, and then the heat built up problems.
Yeah, like that would be a problem in a 300tdi.
Cheers
Simon.
