View Full Version : Another D2 Stereo Question

Hi all, I have found bits and pieces around D2 head unit upgrades, but to me the standard cassette deck looks a lot bigger than a single DIN, but not as big as a double din can anyone that has done the upgrade confirm?
Can anyone recommend a suitable sized unit?
Looking at an after market head unit, maybe Sony. Can the existing CD stacker be used with newer head units.
The Eurovox ? system seems to be having issues accepting the code eg put in the first number eg Code 1 - 4 but then does not go to number 2.3.4. Am I missing something as no stereo manual with the car. Long drive to Brabagallos without music yesterday. LOL.
Cheers

alberts car stereo sell half din blanking covers you may be able to find them on line cheaper..... search for half din facia
as for the cd stacker I cant say I haven't used CDs for the last 8 years
most new head units play mp3 and mp4 files
if you purchase a unit that has a usb port on the rear run a usb cable to a desired location (glovebox ) I use a 16 GIG card gives me about 20 albums and a couple of movies for the kids ..I stream this through to a roof mount DVD screen ... also using mp3 you wont have any cd jumping while driving off road
my unit is slightly different my SD card slots into the head unit along side the GPS sd maps also has the usb feature on the rear
here is mine single din head unit with the screen out and a half din graphic equalizer that sits under my radio I opted to install a graphic 1/2 din equaliser much easier to change sound settings on the fly .. another pro is that I don't loose my sound settings when I disconnect battery

Geordie,
Thanks, what unit did you fit as that would be ideal? Is it one of the Chinese units or one through someone like Ellinz? If so are they hard to set up for Aus? Not many of the retailers here sell them with motorised screens anymore.
Also how did you remove the original stereo?
Cheers

unfortunately mate I never had a stock radio when I purchased the car it had a single din kenwood very basic I already have a double din from my old Nissan but it wouldn't fit LOL
the head unit is from ellinz
if you purchase from them you need to tell them your in Australia so the correct GPS map is installed on the sd card
it comes with a reverse camera that I don't use as by the time the screen flips out and loads up is a bit slow by the time the picture comes on the screen
I also got the digital TV box this only works parked ontop of a big hill no good for driving
as for sound quality and power on its own only I cant say as I have never tried ..I have mine hooked to a soundstream processor and 4 amplifiers busy still doing work but here is where iam up to this system does hair tricks
the camera mic doesn't do it any justice LOL

Thanks mate,
Elinz dont seem to do this type anymore. So the screen retracts all the time? Would be looking for one that the screen stays out or as you said would be useless for reverse.
Cheers

you might find it hard to find a screen that doesn't retract for that size din stealthier look for theft reasons
I only have my screen out when I need to enter some other features
you could just purchase a cheap reverse camera with monitor I paid 50 bucks for mine on sale repco

Hi , to remove the old unit you can get the tool , or just cut 4 bits of coat hanger wire ( straight ) taper 1 end of each wire and push them into the 4 holes of that diameter that you'll see on the unit , this will push the locking tabs open so you can then pull the head unit out

Hey Geordie,
How robust is the fold out screen? Do you think it would survive half decent corrugations?

4wding and corrugations no issues steep point twice lucky bay 3 times corrugation can get wild specially steep point corrugation can last well over an hour some times more
I do lower tyre pressures for corrugation not just for the radios sake but for the discos sake and comfort
there has been corrugation that made the screen flap about I wasn't worried about the screen but more of the fact that this may damage the teeth on the mechanical side
quick press of a button folds down the screen and sucks its self into the radio it works then as a basic radio with an LCD display
I also don't have the screen out when I have my dog in the car she gets front seat and weighs at 30 KG so I wouldn't like the thought of her paws to touch the screen

Forgive me if this has been covered...
I've got a set of ES door trims to fit with HK speakers and tweeters, just wondering the best way to wire up the tweeters, short of forking out for ES door looms?

Does the amp out put have a separate cable for the tweeters? And you only have the one output to the door speakers
if so, one of these (a pair)

Not sure, I've only got midline audio so I wouldn't even have the amp would I?
Car audio is one area I know absolutely nothing about.

You will have a pair of speaker cables going to the door speaker. This is what I called the amp out. sorry for the confusion, I wasn't thinking of a separate amp.

When my original stereo gave up the ghost, it was the CD stacker which failed first, and then the head unit started to play up not long after. I replaced with a complete Sony system, though did not bother replacing the CD stacker as I never use CD's in the car any more in any case.
I got a 1.5 DIN blanking plate from Audiocom in Kalgoorlie, and mounted the single DIN Sony head unit.

All of the speakers in the doors were replaced with the best I could get hold of that would fit (there are some limitations in what size speakers you can get into the doors). The amp was mounted under the front passenger's seat, and the sub enclosure went where the "bin" originally was on the left rear side. All worked well. When Shaun had the vehicle, he replaced the head unit again, but only because he wanted a later model one with "hands free" telephone connection built in, which the unit that I had installed did not have.

They are single DIN.
The factory unit has a big face just to give a continuous curve down the dash But a single DIN such as my Pioneer fits fine.

There are lots of single din touch screen head units on ebay. You can even get then to display the Land Rover logo...gosh.
Whether they are any good is another matter.
I'm waiting for someone like Pioneer or Alpine to make one at a reasonable price that has Apple CarPlay. There are quite a few double din ones that do, but I haven't found a single din one yet.
