View Full Version : Early research on a TD4 FL2 - What to consider?

Hi all, I've finally got SWMBO to agree that the FL2 is not terrible looking at least in pictures online. Looking at a 2010 or later TD4. I know nothing about them, and it won't be used for any proper offroading (have my D3 for that).

On the off chance that she actually likes one in the steel, what are the common things that go wrong with them, and how ugly are they to fix? Any high cost maintenance items?

Thanks

I've been looking at these myself.

Rear diff failure seems to be the most likely serious failure. A recent repair cost the owner $3k.

The PSA motor (DW12 https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/PSA_EW/DW_engine) and Japanese Aisin 6 speed auto (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Aisin_transmissions) which are fitted to many makes seems pretty good. They are generally front wheel drive unless additional traction is required. The TR seems to be quite effective off road. The MY13 (started late 2012) has the updated interior, which is a big improvement IMHO. The SE and above spec has the larger screen and has generally a reversing camera. The HSE gets better trim & heated/memory seats.

I've only had mine a month but I am very impressed with it. I 've alrdeya done 4000km.

Mine's a TD4 manual. Best economy is 7.6 litres per 100km, worst 9.6 litres when giving it a pasting up the mountains.

I may have the diff issue, or I may just have noisy tyres. The noise is different on different road surfaces or wet/dry roads at the same speed. It also doesn't get any louder with the rear seat base up. Hence we *think* it's just the tyres.

It's got me in and out of our difficult sloping, muddy and grassy block without problems every time using the Terrain Response.

My wife likes to steal it because it's so much nicer than her Pathfinder.:p

Other than finding some unimpressive wiring behind the radio due to a previous owner bodging things I have no complaints.
