I purchased a new head unit, so when it arrives this is what I'm going to do.
I didn't go for the head units with microsoft word and keyboards and google search etc as that is stuff I would not use and have the need for dongles

I also purchased a IIDTOOL BT leave it ? in the OBD connector so should be able to blue tooth it to the screen of the new head unit and get live data and fault codes.

So I hope to post some pics of it once it's installed.
Found these tutorials on the net which will prove invaluable.

Don't know why L322 uses torx screws instead of phillip heads on the interior panels.!

I'd be very interested in what you do and what unit you install, Roverlord.

The standard set up in my 2007 is virtually useless because of where I live so anything that will make it more meaningful...........

Cheers, Jerry

Dash is easy to remove - follow the videos and you won't break anything. If you don't already, get yourself a good torx set - everything uses torx screws - you become used to it and after working on mine I think I prefer them now. :)

I haven't heard of it done on the facelift models Jerry. But there should be some way to do it. I agree the radio reception is hopeless and interface dated. It would be fairly easy for JLR to update it if they had a will.

Jerry, this is the unit I ended up purchasing . Why, as it has everything That I need that's simple. I just want GPS and reverse camera, and phone. DVD.
It's dearer than other units on offer. There are others that have functions like key pads on screen for word and google internet etc etc, I don't need this as I don't play whilst driving.
Interestingly the seller has a buy it now and a best offer on their listing. I didn't have time to muck around so I messaged them and asked what their best price was they would accept. I got a reply saying 12GBP off.
I then found the same unit on ebay under a different seller ID which included free express international delivery in the price and it was cheaper than the best offer price the Ist seller offered. I read through the second seller's add and found it was the same company as the 1st seller, same address and contact name details.
I emailed the 1st seller about this but they didn't respond. So I made an offer on the second seller ad, and got an email the next day that it was accepted. So with free express international delivery I save $64 on the original prices.
This is the unit

this is the same seller under a different user name. Which I bought it from cheaper

Interestingly the purchase info emailed to me came from the USMATES.so it is the same supply.

There are other units I looked at but I never got a reply from sellers on there web site after 3 days waiting I gave up
I saw this was installed on a post of the fullfatrr.com forum
This is about $350 delivered to AUS on special.
Has more features and bling, but stuff I wouldn't use.
but it lets you adjust the colour palette for the display which is a good feature.
I don't need internet and don't want dongles etc.
But this is a good buy I think if you want those things.

My new head unit arrived today, it only spent 1 day in customs and delivered the next day. Now where did I put that torx kit I purchased last week?

Almost completed the install.
Every thing was plug and play, got all my steering wheel controls including the phone button operational.
Took a whole 20 mins to remove the dash pad, side panels and remove the head unit carrier box.:)

Fun began with the carrier box which needed some serious modification. It wasn't just a simple cut off a lip like on some Youtube videos tutorials.

I needed to cut the inside panels of the carrier to get the unit to side down into the dash correctly so the dash pad could be fitted correctly. this took quite a bit of time to get it right. Lucky land rover/BMW used thick ABS type plastic for the carrier and not the usual run of the mill thin brittle plastic like on a lot of cars.:)

Then there was no where to fix the new head unit inside the carrier.
So I used dobs of sikaflex automotive , to hold it in place, this will give shock absorbing as well to the unit. To remove would mean a hacksaw through the sikaflex blobs.
The user manual that came with the unit is typical Chinese broken english = useless. I can't work

]out how to enter my phones address book to it.

I still need to finish the job by wiring in the 2 reverse cameras, and then it will be complete.

some pics of the installed unit.
Cheers, Mario

Great job. A huge improvement.

I've also been quite impressed by the quality of most components. The L322 design seems to be quite well thought out. It comes apart quite easily.

Hi Roverlord,

Great job, couple of questions:

Can a novice do it? Im okay with spanners but no expert:;)
How long did it take you?
Did it just plug into the existing wiring loom with no mods inclusive of remote controls on wheel still working?

Looks great

EDIT: Ah, need to find 2006 onwards.

Cheers, Jerry

Cheers, JerryHi Jerry , it's took me a good day I reckon. As I said the pulling the dash apart is a reasonably quick job.
The intensive time was cutting the carrier and checking the fit in the dash over and over.
I didn't take pics as each head unit would be slightly different I'd imagine
Today I routed the cabling for the reverse camera,
I was surprised that pulling the interior panels along the floor and centre pillar was easy, and the clips are quite sturdy, not the usual Land Rover plastic stuff you find on discos etc.
They supply 2 wiring looms that are plug an play, they plug into the exisitng loom plug and the other end fits into the head unit. They supplied a Canbus so the Steering wheel controls all work. Plug and play.
The phone button on the steering wheel brings up the phone on the unit and all works through your vehicle speakers

I have an issue with the reverse camera not working, I ran out of time today, had a visitor drop in and had to stop, also late start and down it's getting darker.
The instructions for fitting are pretty no existent.
The Video in to the monitor has an RCA connector, it also has a thin red wire piggy backing from it.

The other end of the RCA cabling that you take to the camera also has an RCA plug and a thin red cable piggy backing from it.
Looking at the diagram of instructions it shows 2 wirings.

The only other plug I have in the kit is Red RCA plug with a small red and black wire coming from it.
I would say this is the Earth and Power trigger for the Camera?

Looking at the diagram, The head unit also needs a 12 volt power and and earth. I having nothing there, I would assume the head unit is getting power from the main loom that operates the head unit.
Some thing is a miss as I can not get the reverse camera to work, I think I am missing some wiring that maybe needs plugging in?

113458

but looking at this Youtube vid, seems those extra red piggy back wires are not needed,
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LPuWODfOeOw

So I'll do what the chap on the vid did and use my video camcorder and check the head unit and the camera end.

Video of the unit in operation. from youtube.

Is your reverse camera a PAL system,if so it will not work.

It needs to be a NTSC system.

cheers

The camera was the one supplied by them in the kit so it should be the correct one.

With a slight note of jealousy, it doe look the beans!!

Thanks for the explanation, brilliant job and has inspired me to do it. But I need to find the equivalent for the 2006 onwards.

Have also just purchased a new compressor, which is about the same price so the head unit will have to wait.. Christmas maybe!

Cheers, Jerry

All sorted, I did a google and found there are different ways to rig up a camera, i ended up using all the wires. I used the RCA cable with the piggy red leads and wired them in like a video said and all is good.
Style number one camera is same as mine
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f_G-NqpQ8Tg.

I pulled the head unit out again today and attached another Video cable to the Aux Vid in plug, and coiled up and tucked away the video lead under the passenger kick panel for a rainy day.
I might put a front camera underneath that shows the wheels path, thought this might be handy for wheel placement on tracks:)
