Yo,
My right hand CV joint in the PIG (84 Rangie) is starting to make some horrible noises and is probably about ready to go. I've still got the 10 spline front end and am running 35 ET's. I'm assuming axles will be twisted upon stripping it down.
Question: Is there any difficulty in swapping to a later 24 spline diff assembly, say from a Disco or late Rangie, or is it just a straight swap?
Are the CV's in the later assemblies stronger than the early ones or just the same thing?
I will eventually put a locker and after market axles in but cant afford it at the moment so instead of just patching it up with a new CV I thought at least something a little stronger for the time being will do.
Any thoughts guys?

this thread on outerlimits may help you out.

If you are using aftermarket axles and drive flanges, then you only need the 24 spline side gears.
If you are trying to use genuine (i.e. 24 spline disco) stuff, the later models (1993 on) had a narrower bearing spacing, so when you bolt everything up, to your rangie, the splines will be engaged in the diff by 10-12mm less than on a disco. So if you want to use genuine (post '93) 24 spline parts, you need to use the hubs and stub axles as well.[/b][/quote]

I have changed to 24 spline diff on the Rangie but kept the original CV's. As far as I know the CV's on the pre 89 Rangies (ie. the CV's you have) are the strongest you can get and a lot better than the later ones.
The diff swap is a simple bolt in job, I just transfered the ARB locker from my D2 into the Rangie and then maxidrive sell axels that are 24 spline at the diff but still fit the original CV's.
If you buy maxidrive axels I found it is best to order tehm through Fred Smith as he can get them cheaper than anyone else..even cheaper than direct from Maxidrive.

You've already got the strongest RR CV (R606665). When it comes time for a locker, fit the MaxiDrive unit (it comes with upgraded axles) and for a little extra you can fit 110 CV joints (AEU2522) as well (stronger than the R606665). You can also fit these with the right kit without fitting upgraded axles or locker.

So just to clarify, are later (standard not after market) 24 spline axles compatible with the earlier RR R606665 cv's?
I'm thinking maybe replace inner axles and diff with later 24 spline stuff and keep early CV's.
Possible?

No, you have to buy the maxidrive axles to do this which are made to fit the 24spline diff and older rangie CV's. But well worth it - about $600 for the axles

Fred is Cheaper???? Wow....
Also is the RR CV you are talking about stronger than the County???
So what is the strongest??
AEU2522 or R606665
And mine is a 24 spine so what CV's do i have and what will bolt straight in?? (94 fender)

County CV is stronger
Ashcroft are making Cromo/300m replacements for them (That will be awesome but prob massive $$$$)

As you say: Axles are like fuses you just need to find the best amperage.

Yep, no point in running weak stuff to protect weak stuff. Keep replacing the weak stuff until its all strong. Something will always break if you flog the ass out of it, but get it to a point where *you* dont break it.

The problem is that I don't believe this is possible with Rover Diffs.
The aftermarket CV's and axles are great and are not the problem, it is the rover centres that I have no faith in.
