View Full Version : Territory TDV6 into Disco

Hi All,
Just joined the forum.
I am about to fit a Territory TDV6 into a 2009 D4. I see that some members have experience with the conversion. I did one earlier this year but the Territory engine was supplied largely stripped. The only things left on was the turbo and sensors. Almost everything had to be transferred from the old engine. All went well with that one. This time the engine has been supplied complete less starter and alternator.
Does any body know if I can keep the Territory HP pump, injectors and pressure sensors, EGR's etc? It would be nice I could because the new engine has only done 40K while the old engine has 400K on the clock.
Cheers
Alex.

Yes is the answer.
If the D4 has knock sensors, they will need to be transferred over. Some of the EGR and PCV pipework needs to be swapped, as does the timing cover.

Thanks Dave,
That is what I wanted to hear. I know that there are lots of things to be swapped including the sump. But when you pay $3400 for a 40K TDV6 it is well worth effort.
Cheers
Alex.

A D3 currently on carsales has done 389K. I haven't seen a 400K though.

Just might be an aussie record. It is a one owner car that lives on a farm. It gets used in the paddocks as well as on the road. It was running sweet last week until it popped the front crank seal out on start up one morning. It left a 30Km trail of oil to where it stopped. The engine turns over freely but has lost compression. Looks like the pistons got too hot and grabbed the bores.

There is an early D3 tour vehicle based in Alice that would be right up there mileage wise.

Totally possible Dale, you just need to swap more bits from old to new.

Understood it was, but in this instance was checking that it was indeed what LRHybrid100 had done.

A Ford TDV6 into an MY06 D3?
Same motor, as LR stopped using the 2.7 in preference of the higher priced 3.0 then Ford Australia picked up using the motor for the Territory.
The TDV8 was planned for the Ford F truck but the yanks wouldn't pay the extra purchase price compared to the V8 petrol. At the time of planning Ford still owned both Jag and Land Rover.

I'm still trying to find someone to build an ECU and wiring loom to be able to run the Tdv6 and ZF auto in a stand alone application, then I'd be installing this combo in all my LR toys!

LRHybrid100, what are you thinking of putting it in? Feel free to drop me a PM, as I may have one or two things in progress at the moment. ;)

I'm currently looking for a low K territory motor to do a replacement on my D3.
There are some previous posts up where others have done the transplant.
They report you change the sump, front pulleys and the HP fuel pump,(leave the injectors). Turbo is OK, need to change the aircon compressor.
The dip stick appears to only have one bolt hole to mount it.
Nothing written about the alternator or the starter interchangeability.
Have been offered a 45k 2.7 for $3000 complete, and have seen them asking $8000+ for <10k motors, and still I miss out.
So still looking.

Alternator is no use as its only a 2 wire whereas the Disco one is a 3 wire controlled by the ECU.
Starter motor is no use as Ford one does not travel long enough to hit the flexplate - Ford uses a different flexplate with about a 20mm spacer behind moving the flexplate away from the motor and more into the gearbox.
As for the HP fuel pump all depends on what year the D3 is - if its MY07+ then should be able to use the Ford pump, not 100% with this as mine is a MY06 with the previous style pump so I moved that over as I wasnt sure if the ECU would drive/recognise the higher pressure pump without errors.
Hope this helps!
Cheers LRH

I think that this post will answer a lot of your questions:

I completed this conversion with body on. 2014 territory 2.7 tdv6 into our 07 use disco 3. All pulleys need to be changed. aircon compressor. Alternator and starter motor also need to be changed. The turbo oil pipe needs to be changed. The sump pan needs to be swapped. All injectors and sensors can be left and wiring loom is plug n play. Two knock sensors I just re routed them to manifold bolts as I forgot to swap over after installing engine. Make sure to get a upgraded water housing.

You did well doing it with the body on. Most seem to give up and remove the body. I can understand a workshop going down the body off road but wondered if anyone had done an engine swap with body on.

Got rid of the EGR's when mine was changed over (service person fitted some items to fool computer that EGR's still attached, not cheap items but they appear to work very well), motor runs extremely cool now that EGR's are not heating the coolant. Means I can park up in 50+c with aircon going and it stays cool.
I saw somewhere that somebody thinks you need to change your LR air con compressor if you fit the territory motor. NO, you use the LR compressor.
The Territory motor runs 1 less rib on the drive belt and pulleys, so you must change all the front pulleys/belts, tensioners, water pump, PWR steer pump, alternator, over to your Disco parts. Kept the Territory turbo and I think the HP pump also.
There is a list of all parts that need to be changed over somewhere on AULRO (I just cannot find it at present), but covers all you need to change.

You have heard of the thermostat right? You do understand how that works yeah? It stays closed until the coolant reaches the temp to open. That means EGR or not the engine will get to the same temperature and maintain it. At best the missing EGR heat load may slow the warm up cycle but once it’s there the engine will keep it there. Engines are designed with an efficient temperature in mind to provide best fuel efficiency and wear control.

Took my 2.7 out at 380K, and fitted the Territory motor, no reason other than K's and I live remote and cannot afford to leave car by side of road.
The old motor went to a new home and without any changes is still happily powering a D3 2 years later.
A mate has his Tdi 2.5 litre diesel in his Defender and last count was over 600k, on original motor, no major repairs ever.
I think regular oil changes and service items are the key to long life...........same for humans probably also.

I fiund this list of parts which an AULRO member posted up some time ago (thanks to them), seems to cover everything needed to swap over Ford motor to Land Rover

So, the things that need to be swapped from old to new motor are:
Sump
Flexplate and starter motor
Alternator
Air con compressor
Power steering pump
ALL pulleys not included on the items above. This mean crank, water pump, stationery idler, tensioner and fan mount bearing
Serpentine belt tensioner
Fan mount bracket
Timing belt cover
Front water pipe that runs between EGR valves
Bracket at the front to hold the EGR water pipe
Turbo inlet and outlet hoses
Water pipe that runs to left hand side of motor behind turbo pipes
Sensor at the top of the motor near the front, that plugs into grey mesh wiring
Plug for sensor inside the V at the back of the right bank
Entire engine wiring loom
Top front coolant "burp pipe"
Engine mounts
Alternator support bracket
Power steering support bracket (swap or remove threaded rod)
Lower turbo support bracket
Dip stick tube (this does not align correctly with both retaining bolts, but one is sufficient in my opinion)
Turbo oil drain tube
Remove right rear lift ring from supporting bracket
Use the Ford hose clamp where possible unless replacing with worm style, the Ford ones are a better design

Ford Australia part number for the TDV6 oil pump/housing, and price and availability? LandRover part No LR013487
Part number 4R8Z-6600-AF. Priced at $117 locally.
