Hi Guys,

Anyone upgraded their auto transmission cooler on a TDV6?

My Disco does a reasonable amount of towing up and down the motorway to the farm with sometime heavy loads on a dual axle trailer (honest its less than 2 tonnes officer) so looking to keep the gearbox oils cool.

Cheers LRH

LRH,
I haven't felt the need to upgrade the ATF cooling, but did enquire about it a few years ago. DPL can supply/fit this.
Cheers,
Rob

DPL have always been very good at "value adding" your vehicle..

There is no need as plenty of people are towing at full 3,500kg without issue.

Cheers Mike,

Not sure if my gearbox is the original with 260k on it but since I have owned it I have serviced it and replaced the sump with the metal one.

Just trying to be over cautious as do tow heavy trailers full of firewood etc at 120kmph down the motorways! :wasntme:

Not owning a D3/4, anything that keeps your trans fluid cooler is a good thing..

here's another point of view ;)

No kidding, the one and only time I went out there before I started modifying my car they recommended that I put in the transmission cooler at about $1k, and a water separator trap for about $1k and 2 or three other thinks at about $1k each before we even got to the bullbar and Mitch hitch and fuel tanks etc.

The Discovery 3/4 transmission cooling is fine and more than adequate. The only reason to consider another cooler is to remove the chance of the factory cooling system developing a leak and putting coolant into your transmission fluid and vice versa. There have only been a few reports of this with Landrovers but is quite common with Falcons my transmission specialist tells me.

True only a few reports, however, Geedublya and I have some first hand experience. :D:o

Reviving an old thread because... I too suspect that I've had an overheating issue. 2011 SDV6 D4 spent in low range for the day in the Vic high country (not towing) in cool weather and towards the end of the day the transmission was starting to misbehave. Holding onto low gears too long, grabbing the next gear in a violent manner. Eventually received an amber 'transmission warning' which didn't show up in the faults when checking with my GAP IID tool. Next morning it was fine and hasn't occured since so I suspect it was heat related. I had the gearbox looked at by the official ZF specialists in Dandenong, Victoria, shortly thereafter and they gave it a clean bill of health with no faults and normal operating characteristics although they did say the fluid was black and showing signs of excessive heat. (I have had the fluid changed and new metal pan installed at appropriate intervals) Interested in adding a transmission cooler to rule out heat issues in the future as I'm more often than not towing my Patriot X1 with me, in warmer weather, which will create more heat than I did when not towing at all.

I have a 2015 D4 TDV6 purchased new. I tow a 2.5T boat about 10,000 km each year generally at the speed limit. I have a Gap tool and have monitored the transmission temp over many thousands of km in outside temps up to 41oC. I have yet to convince myself that there is any good reason to add an additional transmission cooler to what is std in the vehicle. I do however have the transmission fluid changed every 80,000 km. My transmission remains smooth as silk after 230,000 km!

Monitoring transmission temperature on my 2016 D4 when towing, I was often seeing it go over 100 deg C up hills.
DPL added a transmission cooler which dropped temperatures by about 15 deg.
FWIW, we also service the auto every 60k KMs.

My 8speed runs at around 106degs (moving 6T) on the road pretty much regardless of ext temps.
Is that good? its probably to specs..
Had the trans serviced in Darwin recently and asked the question, (mentioning that weight figure--) and the response was every 80K--
would I still like to add a second cooler like my old BSL? yes.
Is it even possible though??

Hmm. Mine (also the 8 speed) sits at about 86, regardless of external temps - and that includes a recent high revving trip around Moreton Island on the sand, where I checked it out of interest. Maybe a bit high? I get steady state of oil at about 105-110, trans fluid 80-86, coolant 85-95...

FWIW, I posted this late last year!

"I've just finished towing a 6.7M/2.5T boat 4,000 km to the NT and back with my 2015 D4 TDV6, and thought I would share some data from my Gap tool which I had plugged in for much of the trip as I wanted to monitor temps.
38 - 40 degrees C outside temp and 100 kph in Sports mode.
Coolant temp: 98 - 104oC
Sump oil temp: 126 - 129oC
Transmission oil temp: 94 - 100oC (generally 6C less than the coolant.
Most in 7/8 gear - occasionally 6th for a bit of a climb.
17.5 L/100 km"
