Gday, well first post and its a nut cracker , so the other day the Series 2 Td5 lost power and sounded grindy , Turbo me thinks , so getting it home and sitting at the lights l notice grey smoke at the left corner of the bonnet , a horn sound from behind and when I look in the mirror the whole car is in a cloud of smoke , sheeeet , so limped it half a kay home , ripped in the next day pulled the turbo , nothing wrong with it , checked all hoses renewed what I had to put it back together , so now I'm wondering if the starter is cactus as the fuel pressure reg has a leak ? it starts no probs but does sound as if the starter runs on a bit , do you think I'm on the right track , only drove it around the block this morning , has a sound like a stuffed water pump bearing ( if that makes sense ) any advise greatly appreciated !!
cheers Ralph

Could be the starter. Had a similar problem with a Santa Fe a while back. You'll get more responses from posting in the D2 thread. Not many folks look in here very often.
By the way, welcome to the fold :D

I would be looking at the transmission cooler hoses.
They are on the passenger side and are known to fail dropping all the ATF, as it could be ATF on the exhaust causing the smoke.

Surely if the car was covered in smoke there will be oil under there.

Another possibility although on the RH side is that you simply left the hand brake on a bit. Lot of smoke from that.

Front left corner of the bonnet, as from the driver's seat?

I had an issue twice with an acrid smelling white smoke that I think turned out to be air con gas. It's in the same general vicinity as the water pump.

BTW, whereabouts on the Sunny Coast?

Hey thanks for the interest , well here is the answer , the first thing I did was pull the Turbo as stated , no wasn't that , then checked all the pullies with the belt off , no wasn't that , then removed starter motor all good wasn't that ,back under it this morning grabbed the front drive shaft and guess what ,
completely stuffed rattled up and down and side to side , thought it had to be that , got to replace it any way , so of to get a newie , new shaft front bolts and
nylocks all round , Happy Days , no grinding noise or bearing rattle noise , maybe my imagination but drives like it has more grunt , did notice some of the old rubber boot melted onto the exhaust pipe , so I'm thinking that was the cause of the smoke ?? tomorrows job is to get the coolant level right as it is running a bit hot ive probably got myself an air lock , to say I'm happy with the outcome is an understatement ,

Just an update , well the front drive shaft turned into a bloody saga , after being so happy that it was just the drive shaft l couldn't believe it when after 50ks of driving it started to squeak so badly you could hear it inside the car , what the , so back under l go , everything was greased before it went in , maybe turn it 180 hope for the best , after getting it off as I moved the Hookes joint it squeeked , again what the !! so a quick call to the supplier , bring it back we will have a look , they ended up exchanging it for a factory one , young fella at the counter said its the second one that came back ,
So don't accept a drive shaft with the brand RECOVERY obviously ****e,
cheers Ralph
