Well, today was the day, well, late Sat arvo was anyway.
We picked up our brand new HSE, and a Permagrin :D
Wow, is this piece of machinery awesome to drive. Its one thing to take one for a test drive and think,, "geez, this is good, but when you've shelled out the hard earnt, and drive "your car" like you normally do,,,, wowsers.
I thought the green would be pretty, but to see her in the flesh in blue, just amazing, and so glad this is what we ended up with.
Leeanne is supremely glad we've gone back to a Disco, we can cruise in comfort again, she loves it.
Anyway, we all know the rules, so a couple of happy snaps taken by a good mate who kindly drove us over to pick up our new baby,,,, Thanks Chris and Sandy. (Rangieman & Rangiewoman)

As you do,,, we were out showing off the new ride today,, I mean, really, what else is there to do? This is after all, a "drivers" car. :D I'd forgotten how nice Disco's drive, you can feel the car around you, the quietness, the weight, the sureness and the response just make this soooo good to drive. Can't wait to get out on a remote trip and put some miles on her. And one of the things I think is best of all, is Leeanne is extremely comfortable driving it too, which for me is an absolute bonus. (Not that that was ever going to be an issue, she loved driving the V8 D2 too. ;)
I was lucky enough that the sun came out when I was at Chris and Sandy's place, so, as you do,, again ;), we took some snaps to show off the colour.
We have some gear going onto her in a couple of weeks from OP, Traxide and GOE, and hopefully all before the weekend we head off with Gordon for his training weekend in four weeks.
Bull bar/winch (12.5),
Aux Fuel tank,
Spare wheel carrier, (single)
UHF radio, Air Compressor (portable)
Duel Batt system,
Rock Sliders,
Compressor guard,
Compomotive Rims.

Love it Chops! Bit envious of your mods list to come too. I've only managed to do half of it in my 3 months of D4 ownership!
P.s, how good does the new GOE deluxe underbody protection kit sound. Individual components sound much more practical than one big plate.

Earlier model D4's (like mine) have an ashtray. I'm assuming that the later model coin tray is just a modified version of the old ashtray, as nothing else on that part of the dash appears to have changed. Maybe you can find someone with an earlier model D4 who does not use the ashtray for its intended purpose and swap. ;)

Chops, Don't they offer a smokers pack as an option anymore.?
You must have been privileged to be allowed to park on C & S's front lawn. At least you can't get scratched on it there.;)

That's interesting thanks Brian, might look into that, although one of my pet hates is a car smelling of stale smoke,,, easily rectified by opening windows,, I mean really opening windows. The problem with car ashtrays is they get left open so the stink just wafts around and goes into everything. A bottle with some water in it is the best. But I'll look into making something that fits in there and can hold some water I think, for which I might need a proper ashtray.
They certainly don't offer a smokers pack these days, and personally, I think that's pretty poor.
I did ask permission first Mario ;) , but it was freshly mown too :D too good to resist.
Not too worried about scratches, but I'm looking into getting it wrapped for an up coming trip to which I believe the track is fairly tight, so it may warrant the $1500-2000 job being done. There are probably some cheaper options around, and I'll check them all out and see which we prefer.

Hasn't got one in the back though (first time I've ever looked) even though there's another cigarette lighter socket (which I didn't know I had) under the flap in the back of the console. But now I'm intrigued - what is the other small socket marked "AUX" next to the cigarette lighter socket in the back of the console ???

Hey Brian, how deep do you reckon your ashtray is there. My coin tray, which is in the same spot only looks to be about 20-25mm in depth, if that from memory.
Perhaps you having the lever auto shift might be the difference in depth to mine, which is the dial shift unit. Perhaps they changed a few size specs around the console. (??)

On a road trip,,, too easy, would have no problems with that at all,,, good excuse to take it slow and smell the roses so to speak :D
City driving, if I stop, two things could happen,,, I'll get abused for stopping and holding up the traffic, then of course come the repercussion's from that

It's not very deep at all - I'll measure it tomorrow. I've never used it, as I've always had too much crap plugged into the two cigarette lighter sockets, and it doesn't really pull out far enough to be useful for anything other than an ashtray - and I don't smoke in the car.
Come to think of it - I almost don't smoke at all now. Have been on the Champix for nearly four weeks, and the ciggies are almost a thing of the past.

While I agree, Chops smokes in the Defender and I've been a passenger many times and it doesn't smell like a smokers car at all. He smokes with the window right down.
And, while I've always been a non smoker, I still think that someone has the right to do what they want (including smoke ;)) in their own vehicle.

Oh that I agree on, it's his vehicle, he can do what he wants...
The fabric roof liner and materials in the D4 are a bit different to a defender and will soak up the smoke though, far different to the Defender which only has seat cloth.
But regardless - it's his... and he can do what he wants in, on and under it. [emoji6][emoji41]

Window down or not you definitely can tell a smokers car, like Tombie said it will get in the fabrics.
If you're not worried about resale and that's what you do, then no one can stop you, it's yours to do as you please. Though there is side effects. :O

I know about the headliner part, and yes, it's a worry, having said that, I do vacuum it, well, the Discos I've had, and did do the Defender about two years ago, and before it goes, will be done again. Some people try and mask smells with fowl smelling crap,,, hate it.
Leeanne and I are actually in discussions at present on whether or not we'll continue to smoke in either car as they're both new. Certainly no damage done yet. And the main reason for this,,, the crappy placement of ashtrays/bottles or whatever you use. It can be almost dangerous when trying to find the hole when in traffic, not so bad on the open road though.
We'll see.

Out of curiosity I am interested if you wanted to make any comparisons to the L322?
Homestar
3rd September 2016, 03:48 PM
Similarities yes, but my L322 was 13 years old, and although tight for its age and an engine that was still strong, it is no comparison to a new D4, although you can see the DNA in the D4 that comes from way back over a decade ago. Controls felt familiar, but there are far more of them. :D
Power is no contest, the D4 is waaaaaay more powerful than my L322. :BigThumb:
Drivers position is similar and I found it easy to drive after owning an L322.
It felt planted and solid - like the L322 but better.
Overall a great driving experience - seats more comfortable than the older L322's but I haven't driven an L322 past an 07 model, so I can't compare it to a newer version.
Very impressed, beautiful vehicle to drive, I would own one in a flash if I had the means. :)

It's all Opposite Lock gear. Can't remember who their maker/supplier is at this point, but I can let you know later.
I'm not happy with the carrier as I want it to sit the wheel more central to the car so the rear lights can be seen, and not have the little mimic light at the bottom of the unit. So will be looking to see if they make one with a longer arm, and if not, I'll modify it myself.

IIRC Opposite Lock do the Outback Accessories and now also the Frontrunner RWC. The Frontrunner one and Rijidij too(?) sit more inboard don't cover the lights:

Outback Accessories (based in WA) make the wheel carrier. Apparently the advantage of it being closer to the side is you can get another one for the other side, either fitted as a wheel carrier or jerry can holder. Not that you particularly need a jerry can holder with the long range tank, I get about 1500km from mine in city traffic.

Yep - I have the Outback Accessories wheel carrier and long range tank on mine too. I replaced the horrible looking square "mimic" tail light that it originally came with as soon as I got it home with a round LED light assembly from LED Industries in Qld - the new light is a much better match with the OEM tail lights.
I looked at the possibility of extending the bottom arm of the wheel carrier and moving the wheel across far enough that I wouldn't need to run the additional tail light, but I found that I prefer the better rear vision that I currently have with the wheel mounted further to the right, so have left it as is.

I don't know about the "black on grey" for the Disco. Personally I think it would look great in black,, I know it helped set off my Defender, but being a DC ute, it's hardly a comparison.
I think colour coding bumpers etc looks "sharp but sophisticated" so to speak,,, black looks tougher, meaner, menacing almost. I think, or at least I'm hoping mine will look kind of menacingly elegant ;)

What camera ???? :o
There aren't any cameras in mine, and even if there was, I seriously doubt that the position of the spare wheel would have any impact at all on the camera view. ;)
It is the view through the main rear view mirror that is partially blocked by having the spare wheel mounted on the back of the vehicle - the closer to the "centre" of the vehicle the wheel is positioned, the more the view is blocked. :D

He runs a DVD in the background, there is a green 80 series tojo in it.My d2 was in getting a head gasket at the time.I rode shotgun with my best mate Fat Baz in the 80ser for that trip.A couple of weeks later Baz and his lady died in a horrific crash in that 80ser.

Well, its been a fairly busy weekend for me. We had a long 4 day weekend, RDO and the Melb Cup holiday, so made the most of it doing a couple of jobs on the D4.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/
Gordons Alloy sliders have been waiting, so the went on along with the compressor plate.

Got a bit hungry along the way,,, Leeanne's home made sausage rolls went down well :D The boss was supposed to working on Monday too,,, he decided he didn't want to play,, so he missed out on a feed

Also fitted the Tablet stand, which seems like it'll work well. Its part of the Rams systems.

Also fitted up Tim's (Traxide) Dual Battery System.
Due to me being slowed with a back problem, the job took pretty much a full 8 hours with a few breaks along the way.
The battery tray was easy,, didn't need to remove the grill as advised. I have a good selection of tools, so that helps.

Had a problem with fitting some of the wiring through various sections. Wires are supposed to go through the B Pillar cavity, not over as seen here. I hate having to fix other peoples stuff ups.
http://www.aulro.com/afvb/attachment.php?attachmentid=116036&d=1477998129
So I managed to place all the wiring where and how it was supposed to go, although my pinkies hurt a bit now.

One of the issues I faced was trying to get the main power through the firewall, as there was three other wire already going through. This probably gave me the hardest time,,, crouching down twisting to get up inside the dash,,,, hard work :(
So, now to get another battery, and just slot it in and connect it up, which will give me all I need electrically I hope. :D

Coming along very nicely Marcus.
I suggest adding some additional protection to the skinny wiring loom that is running under the battery tray. Or relocating it from under there, which is what I did.
The tray abraded mine enough to cause a short to the chassis and there is a canbus wire in that loom. It caused total vehicle shutdown.
Cheers,
Scott

Thanks for the heads-up Scott.
Its funny, I was looking at that when I did it and wondered about that. I did make sure it was nice and loose, and I've also de-burred the underside of the tray.
An easy job though to lift it again and give it some more protection which I'll do now ;) .
Thanks again Scott.

They are nice and light Andy. I had wondered weather to get the steel version from elsewhere, but my theory is, I don't want the extra weight that comes with that, and I don't think I'll need quite "that much" protection. Accidents do happen accasionally whereby the door could be damaged, so it's worth having something there, but I'm not sure we'll be tackling anything on a regular basis to be worrying about it too much to warrant steel. Replacing bent alloy "maybe" is a cheaper option all round in the long run.

Chops - after seeing a previous post of Scott's on this, I also re-located this wiring loom on mine when I recently had the Traxide battery and tray out while chasing down a coolant leak. There is plenty of room between your new second battery (assuming that you will be using an Optima or similar) and the OEM plastic battery compartment. I have re-located the original wiring loom to the front face of the battery box, plus run the wiring for the second battery along this same face. To secure it all, I simply drilled a few holes in the plastic battery box (removing the battery first) and cable tied everything to the front face of the battery box - it all came out nice and tidy. Pretty sure from memory that what I have done was a very similar copy of Scott's previous post.
I'm hearing ya about feeding the wire through the firewall above the go pedal too. I tried for about an hour without success, and ended up with blood everywhere. My young bloke turned up in the afternoon, and while I was getting a torch to show him where the hole was in the firewall, he already had the bloody cable threaded through ................ :censored:
Another thing that I have done a little bit differently is mounted the Anderson plug under the rear bumper. I found it a pain in the arse having to take off the tow plug cover every time I wanted to plug in battery charger / solar panel / camping lights etc.
You have the same rear wheel carrier as I do and probably the same long range tank. If you do - the rear of the tank is low enough to protect the Anderson plug if you mount it at the bottom of the bumper in a capped housing.
I used one of these housings, and pumped the back of it full of silastic once the Anderson plug & wiring were installed.

Mounted under the bumper to the left of centre. The back edge of the long range tank (with the Lifestyle 4WD sticker on it) can be seen behind the plug.

Agree, the black looks better against the blue. I went with the grey, as they look a bit softer against the white.
Only ask about the trolley jack, as I am one of the members bitching about the LR scissor jack. I have bit the bullet and ordered one of those small low profile trolley jacks. I just can't see myself changing a wheel half way up a steep fire trail using a LR scissor jack

Well, today whilst the car was having its first service, and a pre-trip inspection, to be ready for Melrose, she also had new wheels and boots fitted.
I ended up going with 20" rims with the Nitto Terra Grappler tires.
I have to say, I think ultimately, she "Looks the goods",,, haha, now to get my driving skills up to par. [bigwhistle]
So pretty much, she's just about finished from my perspective. There's probably a couple of other little things I could do to get her ready for touring, there is still the rear light pole to go on,,, just waiting for its arrival. I'd also like to swap out the crappy fog lights supplied with the front bar with the original fog lights, and possibly add a set of Fyrlyt spotties. The last job which will get done will be removing the third row seats to replace with some storage and a stainless drinking water tank.
I used to think I loved the Defender,,, [bighmmm]
The Discovery just eases along with absolutely no effort, is sooooo comfy, and IMO, does everything just so much better. Luxury that's capable of doing what seems to be "everything",,,, you gotta' love that [biggrin]

Hi Scott, they're Advanti's, I can't remember what sub name they give them, that will have to wait until I've found the receipt, hiding somewhere in the car which is full of stuff at the moment.
Since the the wheel alignment has been done, wow,, she sits on the road so much better. Was a fair way out apparently, which is supposed to be normal as everything beds in. Now, she's as tight as a drum, and just hugs the road very nicely.
Because both the wheels and alignment were done at the same time, I'm not in a position to say which is more beneficial, but I would think its the WA, not the tires.
Looking forward to to getting into the bush to see how they perform.

I actually think the silver looks better as it breaks up the all black a little bit ...

Paint the wheels silver before you fit the tyres. Then they will look GREAT.
Can't stand this black wheel fashion statement! They just look dirty to me.
Guess I'm just too old now!

Well, had a good day yesterday. Started as usual at 5am when the alarm went off, made a coffee ☕️ and headed off to work to do some work on my baby 🚙.
Have been trying to clean the car seats for some time now. Time, work and health keeps not lining up,, so this weekend it did.
In the first pic you’ll see the seats are really dirty [bigwhistle] We both work with silicone, and I have the extra bonus of being a maintenance fitter, so at the end of the day, we’re stuffed and dirty. This of course transfers to the nice and comfortable Almond Ivory leather. (I still pay her out for not letting get the Windsor Leather,, haha 😂, no heated seats for her [tonguewink])
Yeah yeah, I know, I could at least put seat covers on. I have a set sitting at home,, lambswool no less but I really love the feel of the leather, but we’ll probably put them on just before we start our trip.
So so as you can see, the seats are filthy.
I chose to use Bowdens products to work with the leather, and I think it’s done a good job. Took a bit of work, and to get it done correctly, I actually needed to use a shoe brush to get into all the little books and crannies of the texture of the leather. The pads etc that they promote don’t really get in when the going tough. Been there, tried that. Some quick research on Google lead me to some good info on this procedure.
So, you’ll see the part job done, which sort of really shows just how dirty the seats 💺 are, and how well they’ve come up. Pretty happy with the end result, but I’ll need to do them again I guess to get them right, but a huge difference, and hopefully now I can keep a better eye on it. The filth kind of sneaks up on you unfortunately.

Bit of a bonus going into work at the usual time was I got to see the Blood Moon 🌙
It takes a bit over a half an hour to get to work in the morning, so checking this out was cool 😎 and watching over the half hour or so that I did, I pretty much got to see the whole process, well the important parts anyway.

After cleaning the seats and around the front section of the interior, it was time to wash her.
Usual wash with nothing special, just a bucket of hot water with soap and plenty of elbow grease,, although, I was feeling it last night, and especially today [bighmmm]
End results speak for themselves I think 🤔 but I’m looking forward to doing a cut and polish a bit later in the year.
Tuesday should see the fitment of my new TuffAnt rims and tyres, and once again she will look 👀 smick as,, as well as being exceptionally capable. (Now I just need to learn to drive her [wink11]capably)
We we’re heading for the Berwick LR brunch on Saturday morning, so the cars clean, just needed to get myself clean and changed, and we’d be there.
A tad disappointed 😔 with the event. We rocked up, and there’s like nothing happening. They had a D1, a D2 and a D4 there on show, and of course, the “All new Discovery” ( today was all about the Discovery line up). Nice cars, but I fail to see what a couple of “plain Jains” are going to do to win customers. I think they could have done a whole lot better. The guys of which there seemed to be plenty of, were all grouped together talking their own stuff whatever that was, and not engaging with us anyway. We’re actually fairly well known here as we’ve bought cars and looked at other cars for our daughter as well.
I’m hoping that they had a good day anyway,, but it wasn’t for us, so we went for a good
drive.
Was a beautiful day, didn’t venture far as such, but covered a few miles, had a good feed at the bakery in Pakenham, and then over towards Inverloch and back home.
All in all, a good day, both productive and relaxing 😌.

So I bought myself some driving lights, SuperNova 8.5's. I know, not the Fyrlyt's I wanted, but, they'll do me for the time being.
Question for the brains trust,, where's the best place to break into the loom for the high beam wire? The relay will be over at the LH light near the battery, so somewhere close to that would be best.
Next, has anyone just drilled a hole through the firewall to put wiring through at all,, if so, where do you reckon is the best place to go through? The only "ready made" hole I know of has been used already, so I need another.

I piggybacked off the high beam wire at the loom right at the LH headlight plug. Only a short run from there back to a relay near the battery, though the wiring has to go via the switch on the dash anyway.

Any idea which coloured wire I'm looking for, although I suppose there should only be a couple to choose from anyway.

Blue/slate LH side i believe, there is also a grommet to the right of the brake booster and you will need to poke a hole thru the insulation on the other side to poke the cable thru. Run the switch wire under the scuttle panel across to the LH side then along the inner guard to the relay.

I've just put in a relay in my D3 and the grommet was choccas!
So I used a bluetooth one - NO WIRES TO THE CABIN!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm putting Rigid Industries LEDS in, so there is not a lot of current draw, but this coming weekend will see me looking for the trigger wire off high beam.
so far, the install has been a breeze.

Not sure what lights you have but just a thought, if you have BiXenons you might want to check this out to see if it affects you.

Been an expensive few months recently with a full major service, new brakes, LCA bushes and a few other bits and pieces etc, and now to top it off, yesterday the battery died.
So, $400 odd later sees a new Delkor S/S AGM purchased, and of course, the Yellow top is now about 8+ years old, so had best do that too I’m told 👍 It has been playing up this last year, hence I only use the fridge when the cars running.
Now to fit them up, head into Ivan so he can reset what needs resetting, and she’ll be perfect again.
I noticed again, I’ve lost all my wheel weights. I’ve had this sorted twice already, next time I’ll ask for “stick ons”. I don’t have any vibrations as such that I can feel, Unlike last time, but I’m sure it can’t be good.

Surprisingly I discovered the main battery only had just over 11v, and my old Yellow Top still had something like 12.5v in it. I did struggle getting the old one out, and the new one in, it’s tight squeeze and my crappy back didn’t help any either.
So now I have one of those third world problems to deal with now, and hoping for a little direction.
In changing out the battery, of course I have now lost all my little electrical “fixes” that had been made. Things like the windows automatically doing the
“one touch up” movement, and the rear window “one touch, down 1 inch-ish” movement.
Can anyone enlighten me as to where I can find this info again please. I’m not even sure what to call these little fixes.
