View Full Version : Genuine Land Rover Towbar coupling too low

I purchased a genuine land rover goose neck ( towbar coupling ), and now find it is just to low for my boat trailer coupling.
I bought this as I was told I needed a solid bar and not a box section bar due to the length required for the coupling.
I also tried fitting it up side down, this gives me the height, but it hits the bumper and the boat trailer coupling would gouge out the bumper.
I am unable to lower the jockey wheel enough to fold it out of the way to drop the trailer coupling onto the tow ball. It just will not sit level
So now on the hunt for a coupling that is long enough and has the correct height. $250 wasted at land rover:(

Check the L322 section for the long HR tongue that is the popular choice.

Hi Graeme, I did a search and TBM21181 comes up a couple of times, yet HR doesn't list this on there web site, maybe it's discontinued or superseded. The Catalogue only seems to go to P38 and sport in Range rover options.

Mario I did the same thing, bought an OEM tow bar from the dealer in Perth, had the same problem with my boat trailer. Tow ball hopelessly low. Ended up buying an extended solid bar at ARB, and turned it upside down.
It was a right squeeze, but I was (if careful) able to get the trailer socket over the ball without gouging the bumper.
Also had to buy a wireless reversing camera from Jaycar so I could see the damn tow-ball from the driver's seat:-)

You should be able to see the ARB tow bar in this shot. It's got a Trigg hitch fitted at the moment to tow my camper trailer. Just under the number plate is the reversing camera pointing at the tow bar.

Thanks Graeme, I might take a wonder over to ARB head office and see what that have for me.
I intend to fit a reverse camera just above the ball. I just need to work out a switching system to switch from one reverse camera to another.
The head unit I have coming has aux so might see if I can rig up a camera to just for the ball shots.
I hooked up the boat trailer which has LED lights, all lights work, but i did notice a very faint on an off twinkle coming from the left side lights, not enough to fully illuminate the lights but there seems to be very low voltage feeding them.
I must have a wiring problem on the trailer plug wiring?/?
Do the L322s go ok with leds on trailers?

TBM21181 sounds familiar and expected to be what I purchased. Mine provides plenty of clearance between the bumper and my van's coupling although the coupling is currently only an on-road 2.5T version rather than an off-road coupling.
I had noted to the seller that it is not stamped with either the manufacturer's part number nor a load rating so could be a roadworthiness issue.

I called in to ARB and now another $217 poorer on tow bars, they have to order it in from Hayman Reece. They took my money and now I have to wait 5 -10 days for the thing. Just as well the fishing season is not in full swing yet.
Already $250 for the genuine hitch kit I'll probably never use unless I need to tow a really low trailer with flat tyres .LOL

Is this the one you ordered Mario?

I thought the $100 that I paid from an off-road shop was dear enough!

That looks familiar, they didn't have one on display so I had to buy it sight unseen out of the catalogue. I found the part number on this forum.

I think your twinkling lights are the ECU looking for a trailer by sensing a load on the indicator circuits. As they're LED it's not picking up the load.
There's some very expensive boxes that rectify this. There also looks like some cheaper fixes by adding resistors in parallel to the LED indicators to increase the load.

This is a big thread but all the information about brake controllers and lights is in there.

you may be able to run the led's via a relay so the ecu reads a normal voltage at the relay. just thinking..
Love the car.

I just got these http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/321949629168.
Going to put them accross the pos and neg connections at the indicators of the trailer.
I'll let you know how it goes.

So I've installed the resistors and all functions now work. I had to tap in to the reverse wire in the left hand rear space and cut the rear trailer fog light wire and connect them to get the reverse lights on the trailer to work.
The twinkling however persists, which if I'd read this thread (http://www.aulro.com/afvb/l319-discovery-3-4/85396-discovery-3-led-trailer-lights-29.html) earlier I would know that my D3 needs relays to filter the twinkling. So that's the next task.

Now the relays are installed there's no twinkling and the dash has the trailer light. Solvered.
