This is not the usual "which tyre is best" thread
I have been assigned the task of sorting 4 tyres for the mother in law.
As I am lucky to have a good mother in law I want to do the best I can.
Her car is a Mazda 6 and she is 79 years old.
The car is mostly used for local trips with the odd trip to Cobram(80 kays)
She does not need to spend megabucks on sports tyres, however I do not want to get her rubbish.
I have rung around looking for deals and this is what I have come up with.
All the below are buy four and pay for three deals.
Bridgestone Tyres.
Firestone tyres $390 plus $55 for alignment.
Bob Jane.
Zeon tyre, which they say are made by Bridgstone. $360 Alin $55
Yokahoma $417. Salesman reckons that these are more a sports tyre whith good grip and will not last as long. Probably not suited to an 80 year old.
Goodyear
Nexin $390 Alin $95
Tyrepower.
Toyo C100 $450 Alignment $88
They also offer with a 4 tyre purchase that every 10,000 km you can have
a rotation, balance and alignment for $49, which I reckon is a good deal.
Although the most expensive, I am leaning towards Tyrepower's Toyo's.
What are others thoughts.
And if you know of another deal with a brand you think are good, put it up

For that use I'd suggest even the cheaper tyres will perform nicely.

Dave, i just had some Supercats in 185/65/14 fitted to my wifes pulsar.
Cost me $265 for 4 fitted on a special where the 4th tyre was only $10, there are a few others with similar specials like Hankook, Bridgestone and Kmart stores.

Bridgestone have the same Supercats deal, finishes tomorrow.
However, for my size tyre the price is $390.
Hadn't thought about Kmart. I shall give them a ring.

A rebadged Supercat from memory, the ones that I saw had exactly the same tread pattern as my cats. I had the cats on all my cars until recently and they were quite good, particularly in the wet.

Back years ago they were the Bob Jane Outa-rounder. Never could balance one without a heap of lead...
Certainly weren't Steel Cats.

Look at Maxxis. I've only had good experience with them and only see the odd bad review (too noisy for some).

I can't see myself buying firestones again, but that was a long time ago. We have bought plenty of Bridgestones, great tyre but they wear the edges, Yokohama wear really quickly, like really quickly. Actually the tyre that has really impressed me are the Michelin Pilots that my Subi runs (WRX rims), and they are quiet, grip well in the wet and dry, but for your purposes they are lasting really really well by a long shot and they roll really well especially with extra air in them. They're also a comfy tyre and pots holes and my gravel driveway haven't destroyed them (touch wood). Not sure of the cost, but even if a bit more they are proving to be really good value. Reminds me of the factory D2 Michelin tyres that people would get 100,000km from, but these are a significant;y better car tyre.

I recently bought Bridgy Teranza Serenity plus on the 4 or price of 3 + $10 deal. In 215/55/17s they were $199 each or about $600 for all 4 plus balance.

Sounds like almost anything round and made of rubber would do the job.

Being a courier and doing a fair bit of mileage I shouldn't have, but just couldn't afford better. I've just put four new Maxtrek on my ute. They were less than half the original replacement. They handle ok, are showing zero wear after 25k, but they are hopeless in the wet. I tend to drive very conservatively but in the wet they are downright silly.
I assume this might be the case for most "cheaper" tyres.

i had a friend you had them fitted to a car she owned once, there was a bulge on one side wall, like a double layer of rubber on one tyre , she took it back immediately and the refused to replace it.

Would you buy a Roadshine, Deestone or even a Bluestreak? (Last one should really be called a Brownstreak).

I would if others had used them and said they were ok.
This is the whole point of this thread, to gauge opinion of others, generally through their experience or the experience of friends.

I'm just countering the statement of any tyre (anything so long as its round and black). I'd prefer someone to have a tyre named above to a bald tyre, but personally I wouldn't touch them as tyres are one of the most important things on a car.

Even 'Brand-Name' tyres can lead you astray... My C**pers / B#G, Front-Rear combination let go of the road in very slightly damp-ish conditions... at speed limit. :o
The 'Discoverys' never were as good in the wet as the previous cheapo 'Westlakes' a.k.a 'Goodride' SU318 - Highway pattern.
BTW, the Wetlakes needed minimal balance weights, wore evenly, quiet and a very Good Ride (;)) and stayed perfectly black.
And Round.
Edit:- I'd suggest looking up a couple of the online TyreSales, and check out prices etc of the "Best" range, RH one of the 3 columns,,, One includes fitting etc in the up-front price, another one does NOT, as their agents charge differing amounts.
Agree, get the best you can afford, without being obsessive. I'd place more value on 'Top wet-weather grip, soft ride & low noise' rather than mileage. At the rate she drives, even the softest would last 5+ years.
