Hi Guys, after reading Mario's thread I find myself in the same boat. First time posting a link. After having diesel discoveries I find it hard to cross over to a V8 although I'm not saying never. There's a 2002 Vogue at the Goldy with 368k for $11k that's interesting. Any and all advice much appreciated.

That link goes to a TD6.

Whatever you do, if you are looking for a vehicle in that age group, don't expect to wizz off and have no problems. You should budget a fair few $$$k for R&M.

It comes with the territory!

You're right Jerry, I'm prepared for the r&m bills.
Mario? The TD6 is the much better vehicle. Apart from eyeballing r&m receipts and driving it anything I should watch out for?

G`day ,

i didn`t see the car but talked to the owner .

Couple of months ago when i was looking the car in the link had just passed a roadworthy and all it needed for the RW was front bushes if i remember correctly .

The owner told that the transmission is original and other than the bushes nothing had been done .

It`s been on the market a few months

Bang for buck I reckon the facelift 2005/6 Jag 4.4 petrol V8 is the best value ATM. These get good reports on reliability, cost of maintenance, have a ZF 6 speed, and non electronic hand brake. The last one I saw sold for low $20s with about 180,000km.

However, for distance and torque it's hard to beat a diesel.

I agree with Jerry, you need to be careful buying an older high mileage L322. My 2008 tdv8 was high mileage but it had an amazing service history and was the right price. Even so I had to replace the tranny and transfer.

A very wealthy businessman I know quite well told me a long time ago: "Interest is cheaper than maintenance."

He's built a $100 million business hiring out mining and construction equipment. It was always cheaper for him to buy new equipment - with interest rates so low - than it was to keep the old stuff and maintain it.

It can be a bit of a toss-up between low-interest finance on a new or near-new car with a warranty - and fixed monthly repayments - than an old, complex piece of machinery with unknown maintenance costs. Unless of course, you believe that a Rangie is a hobby, not a car:-)

Looks good if you ignore the massive depreciation hit you take on the new car. That skews the balance towards repairs I reckon!

Yes I refer to our 2010 L320 with 200 000kms as an ongoing restoration...

Yes that's true, but you can minimise that hit with a car that's say 18 months old, so it's already taken the biggest depreciation curve, then extend the warranty. I've done that twice and never regretted it. I can budget for finance repayments, but it's hard to budget for unforeseen and expensive repairs. I don't mind doing 'small' repair jobs but I don't have the time nor the desire to embark on major mechanical/electrical stuff. I'd rather that be left to the specialists, at LR's expense, while armed with knowledge from this forum so I know the right questions to ask.

Yes I would have been in trouble if my L322 was needed on a daily basis, when the tranny failed and took 3 mths to repair.

Steve, I'm a virgin, only had mine for a week.
others are better qualified to give advise better then me.
Homestar had one with some problems intially I think but sorted them out to have a good vehicle.

My limited experience.
Watch out for transmission issues, check whether it has been serviced, upgraded be for you buy. Make sure all the electricals work as should as these can become an annoyance on the complicated vehicle.
Watch out for people offering theirs at very high prices, they are dreaming and over value their own vehicle.
Watch out for the real cheapies as they would be cheap for a reason, hi kms etc.

If it's been on the market a few months then he might be in a negotiating mood for a sale?

It was listed in January and has had two offers. I don't mind the ideas of some repairs as British Off road is 15mins away and would negotiate the price accordingly. My brother is an expert at the uncomfortable silence. I'm glad he will be on my side, I would hate to try and sell anything to him.
I also take Greg's point about paying more initially which takes me into RRS TDv6 territory but I prefer size of the FFRR. I'm 6'3 but the other blokes in my family are all 6'5. Haven't sat in an L320 but observations about big blokes in it would be good. I might ask the question in the L320 forum.
I won't go into the gory details but due to some severe medical issues any and all advice is very much appreciated guys. I'm driving a gold au falcon and it's doing my head in.

LOL, Long legged and I am amazed with the drivers seat fully back I can stretch my legs under the dash and actually use the foot rest ( I couldn't on my D2.)
My son is 6'7 and he always struggles in any car, put him in the back seat, they have good depth and he had plenty of room without his knees hitting the front seat.
I looked at a RR sport, but went the full size as the RRS is smaller.
Also what turned me off the RRS was then need to pull the body off to do certain repairs which add to labour time. After hearing of the problems with the D3 with motor work access.
I still am enjoying the sedan car like driving,the air suspension is so smooth, little divets in the road surface are so quiet, not like the Disc 1 & D2s, you just sort of have that floating on a cloud experience. I'm still luv'in it.
