Generator replacement options

Hi all,
I have just been told by local auto elec that my original C40 generator (+ve) is probably dead. (Too much corrosion, elongated bolt holes, zero output, etc)
He tells me there are new replacement Lucas C40's available, now apparently made in India.
Alternatively, I could seek out a good condition second hand C40 and rebuild it.
Assuming I want to retain the original system and not convert to an alternator (-ve) has anyone had any experience with the new Lucas replacement dynamo?
Appreciate any opinions?

Probably far better to find a genuine one & rebuild, quality is likely to be much, much better.


If you decide to go Indian then try a Tractor supplier as they can sometimes be cheaper than a Land Rover supplier and definitely cheaper than an auto elec.

The one below has a tacho drive but otherwise looks the part

As an outside chance, call some of the older Massey Ferguson dealers around the country to see if anyone has some new old stock (the generators on grey fergies are the same). While it may be a long shot, only a short time ago, I called one (Donalda motors in Maffra) about the carby for a grey fergy - to my surprise they still had a nos carby on the shelf - been sitting there for 30 years. I bought it for the princely sum of $86. :)

The FIL's old TE20 starts and runs like a dream again. :)

I would be using one of these Alternator conversions, looks exactly like a C40

keep it original i have all the parts you need we have a guy in brisbane who rebuilds them and puts a bigger out put into them regards jim

How does he manage that do you know? Change in number of turns on the field and armature plus higher temperature insulation?
