I have had a look through a couple of manuals I have and I can't seem to find any info on the gear selector for the ZF auto in my RRC.

My problem is that the lockout lever has stopped disengaging (for want of a better term). I can move it up and down, but the shifter will not go into first. At first, I thought the circlip had popped off the top, I removed the plastic cover and the circlip is still there. The pin moves up and down but doesn't "unlock" the mechanism to allow the transmission to shift into first. I need 1st as I do a lot of slow crawling off road, especially down hill.

Does anyone have a diagram of the mechanism? Or can tell me what may be broken? I have a spare auto, I just haven't had time to look at it as it is at my sisters house.

The button on the side pushes a tapered wedge which moves the locking pin up via the circlip. If the circlip is in place and the wedge hasn't broken it shouid lift high enough to disengage the lockout.

Is there anything around the shifter that is physically stopping it from moving? Does it disengage ok to get it out of park, etc?

X2 for looking under the selector.
Mine did something similar and found a screw was stoping the arm from moving its full travel.

X3. In my case it was a 10c coin.

I have had the shifter apart and rod that moves up and down still moves up and down. It doesn't spring back down though. I can see where the rod goes into the mechanism on top of the transmission but I can't see what it has to disengage. I think I will just have to pull it apart and see.

Finally had a chance to look at the car yesterday. It seems to be a plastic clip or something that has broken. Once I had removed the console I found a small plastic thing that looked like it had come off the bottom of the locking pin. What I also found was the housing that held the shifter was a bit loose. I tightened the 4 screws and then the shifter went into first again. I haven't fixed the locking pin though so now it will shift through all the gears without stopping. I think I will try and find a replacement shifter as a whole unit.
