View Full Version : Respraying a Defender

I might be asking a silly question, but I am thinking of the possability of respraying my defender a lighter color - it is now dark blue. But I wonder if anybody has experience in the area namely:
* Is the new paint as tough as the old and resistent to scratches?
* What is a ballpark cost?
* Should I proceed, is painting a lighter color going to work or should I stick to a darker shade?

Thnks in advance for any replies.

Paul, what is the reason for the change? Is it to reduce internal temperatures in summer?

Does your Defender have a white roof?

OK as an ex spraypainter panel beater.

DONT

why???

a full colour change so no one knows on a Defender is a full body job, not just the outside. Inside, underneith, engine bay........
Its a huge job.....

Cost..... more than its worth for a decent job.
Minimum cost if you get a dodgy bloke and do the lot will be about 3-4k if you strip the interior and running gear.

Decent job that looks factory......... $10k is a starting point.

If you were to do just the outside and not anywhere else then you might get it for about $2k on the cheap or $5k for a good job.

Dont be fooled with the guys that claim they can do it for $799 it cant be done and will be so bad you rig is worth scrap.

Also 2 pac looks great off the gun and has a nice shine... But Acrylic is better long term and easyier to repair if you get a knock or dint.

So after all that.

DONT. its not worth it......

What are you wanting to repaint it for??

Ron, its dark blue whith a white roof at the moment, I was thinking of a very light grey all over as a good compromise for heat reflection and to make it look a bit better.

I have had nothing to do with respraying in the past but some of the points sclarke raises sound true to me and you are the expert, so I dont think I will go ahead with it.

Thanks for the advice.

I wanted mine to be Tangiers Orange.

After all, I like things that a little bit different or unique.

If that's the colour of the G4 Defenders, yep - that's how I want mine resprayed.

i love the greay and black, but same here... even for me to do it it would be uneconomical.

Plus when the id tags state the colour and you go to sell it they get suspect when it is a different colour....

Blue is nice..... if you want to change it get it looking like a zebra with stick on transfers...... use the blue as black.............

I like the blue.

Maybe heavy tint on fthe windows. There's a lot of glass.

How well does the tropical roof work on the older Series LR? I've thought of getting one for my County which has the external ribs on the roof.

I looked into for mine. To escape the baby poo brown colour. To get it done properly was going to cost a fortune. So brown it is.

My wife wouldn't let me buy Garth's baby poo brown County (RoverOne and seqfisho will know the car) - she didn't like the colour.

Thats the best description I have heard for the colour.

Might have to use that in future

That's what my wife calls it, too. I don't mind the colour - it's very different to the boring whites. That's also why I like the blue colour of Paul's (bk).

I assume Paul's car is this colour:

Lewy, your avatar reminds me of a time I was stopped at the big merino. I was on my Honda CBR1000F and a bus full of Japanese tourists arrived. A number of the male tourists came up to me to look at the bike - "Ahh, 1000, very big!" was the common comment.

Tinting the windows sound like a good idea to spuce the looks up a bit without costing a fortune.

I started looking at the respraying because blue was UV damaged a bit as the thing lived it first life up in North Queensland, but I will look into other choices. Maybe just doing the bonnet and roof in original colours.

I think black looks great as well, but it would be too hot up north.

Now there is an idea Paul.

Why not have the roof sprayed white. This is authentic. The bonnet should be relatively easy to do in the original colour and if you want to stretch it to the front guards then that is not much more.

I am helping Cousin_John prepare his County for a complete respray. To do it properly requires dismantling which is what we were having to do anyway.

"Cadbury" was a great buy at the time, probably the best example of a County around, shame the new owner left it outside to deteriate so bad, Garth would be upset if he saw saw its state now.

Actually its a colour that does grow on you....eventually style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif

I heard of A.J Corben Panelbeaters at Hurstville doing a full respray on a Defender after hail damage costing the insurance company $17,000, but they do an amazing job, masters come to mind. Every panel is removed from the car and sprayed and then reassembled when they are all done, looks better than new and literaly is 8)

Cheers

I was also very tempted when Jenny sold it but it was looking shabby then.

I paid about $3000 for a total respray of the county during the restoration (still in progress). I did it in zambisi silver. I picked the colour as it was coolest next to white. I removed almost every rivet and dismantled the body, taking bits to the spray painter in the trailer. It was a big job and not easy to put back together. You would think it would go back together the same way but it wouldn't (a 2 door would be a lot easier).

In hindsight I would have left it white as I probably would be finished the job by now and it is cooler than silver. White also takes damage easier and you can get replacement body panels without having to do a respray.

the only good thing about my colour is that it is very close to aluminium by white night and so easy to do minor repairs.

I recommend you trade it in for a white one or get the roof sprayed white.

good luck

Back in the day when a Landie was an affordable car it would have been phrased "Baby poo brown"

"Artesian Mud" even sounds expensive

Ron

Tropical roof worked well on the Series Landrovers, but as the headlining in the County provides some insulation, the difference may not be so marked. On the 2a I had in the sixties I made my own tropical roof by buying sheet aluminium. From memory I only put it between the ribs, although I remember thinking that the corners and edges could be supported on rubber door stops with bolts through them. Must see if I can fins a photo that shows it.

What about just painting the roof to match the car?
... I was thinking the same for mine.

Guys I have a 2001 Defender, dark blue. I also love the G4 orange colour but would never paint the entire car for all the reasons mentioned.

Was wondering what the car would look like with orange running from the bonnet and over the roof?? Might try and mock this up in a graphics app and see how it looks???? This would be quite and easy job and might create a differnet look.

It is cheaper long run to sell your car and buy the right coloured one.
Unless you have modified it to the Hilt.

If anyone want there car colour changed i can do it.
it will take me about 3 months and about $10k.

Thats not just a outside change. thats everything. no spot will be the orig colour.....
Think about it....
open the bonnet, What colour is it?
under the plastic sills?
Door hinges?
behind bumpers?
under the floor.............

its near impossible to do, but can be done.... Accually i wont do it. I would get a mate who is a GURU on body work to do it.

I repainted my 2a several years ago - this involved disassembling the body down to individual panels and painting them separately, then reassembling. It was a fairly big job, but with the 110 it would be a lot bigger job because of the amount of trim that has been added to later models (and the fact that the 2a is a ute and the 110 is a station wagon). I did have ideas of repainting the 110 a different colour, but I am daunted by the idea of the work involved. It will have to be repainted eventually, but I will stick to the original colour I think, as this means that complete disassembly is not needed.
