Article in the most recent LROI mag reports that INEOS chairman Jim Ratcliffe is undertaking feasibility study to build a modern defender with a focus on military, North America and Africa. The article is scant on details but the caption from INEOS was it would be an expedition type vehicle to compete with land cruiser reliability.
LRJ said its not interested in selling tooling or joining forces.
Just need a direct line to Jim to convince him a V8 diesel with strong running gear is what Africa (and Oz) needs.

pardon my ignorance but what is INEOS?
no build information on any modern defender will come from anywhere other than JLR..... and JLR are NOT releasing information about ANY modern defender.
btw all 4wd vehicles coming out of Thailand are being developed with smaller , more powerful , torquier engines.....not V8's.

INEOS is a chemical company. The Chairman is worth GBP5 billion. He loves his Rovers.
The Article suggested reverse engineering. After all the defender technology is ancient in motoring terms. INEOS comments took the view that any technology LRJ owns in respect of the defender is now past the usual protections. Reading the article my impression was that it would be old school rugidness, better reliability and safety features to meet the US market. MLD

Sounds like an opportunity to put the 'executive email carpet bomb' to use for good, rather than evil.

It worked for Triumph so could work for LR.

I'm pretty sure even the Santana had rack & pinion steering, and the modified the firewall to fit a more modern dash. So re-engineering is possible. For some reason they stayed with s3 type spring set up.

More on the Ineos option:

I had hopes but I think the Ineos project has gone off the rails.

IMO Ratcliffe should get onboard with Bollinger,
If he dosen't get his act into gear he will miss the boat like JLR have done long ago.

Sadly, I am starting to think that the new Deefer will be a no-show. I think JLR will use the VW-inspired monkey murders to declare that "no-one wants a "real" 4wd with a diesel engine anymore, so we'll just concentrate on the yuppie market. Thanks for your loyalty, would you mind joining the hairdresser queue? "
Sad, isn't it?

Whats sad is the carry on about this car, if it does or does not happen and what it will be! I'm sure a few here have wept in their sleep about it[emoji6][emoji4]

I'm sure it will happen. Utes and small cars are the big sales movers, so JLR will want a Defender ute, plus other versions.

Actually I would not be surprised if there is no ute version. Since they can’t sell it in the US it would be a hard sell.

Why couldn't they sell it in the USA? Isn't it being designed to comply with US standards?

Why couldn't they sell it in the USA? Isn't it being designed to comply with US standards?May be not a big seller there. They never got diesels i don't think. But because its not a big seller in the U.S. means it shouldn't go ahead[emoji6][emoji4]

The chicken tax. All pickups have a 25% duty so they can’t be sold at a reasonable cost. All pickups sold in the US are built in plants within North America to avoid the duty.

Looks like BMW powertrains for the Ineos, will be interesting to see what they come up with.

How many new Defender threads are we going to have - vehicle is not out so the overall topic at this stage only covers conjecture on what the vehicle is going to be like - so really one topic.
For sure when it is released there will be a range of topics and issues to discussed like any model that will deserve their own threads.
Interestingly given the rate that BlackRangie puts up posts, and the time it is taking to release the new model - I am sure the main L660 thread will come close to being the biggest in AULRO history and BlackRangie will have the record for the highest number of posts.[bigrolf]

Its not actually about the new defender, its the Grenadier, by Eneos, threads already exist about it.

"His aim is to preserve the Defender’s hose-out practicality and rugged personality, but to lift build quality and reliability to LandCruiser levels."
:Rolling::Rolling:
I thought those vehicles have all sorts of issues.
Anyway,back on topic,interesting stuff.

Anyway, back on topic, interesting stuff. The 1vd is one of the most troublesome motors out there. But people seem to have no issue blowing $30k for a new motor, not once, but twice.

I am posting in all threads in the L660 forum to reaffirm that the actions of some members here is causing others a lot of grief. I have closed 'It won't be Retro' for a couple of days to let everyone calm down - I expect the same thing on this thread - ongoing aggressive behavior by ANYONE will NOT be tolerated.
