I put my 2016 D4 over the public weigh bridge yesterday and shecame in at a whopping 2860 kg ? with ? fuel,no passengers but including all additional equipment and accessories. To this we need to add some rock sliders 34kg and compressor guard 6kg coming soon- to get her to 2,900kg. This works out at 317kg( 2,900 kg weight less 2583 kerb weight inc fuel no passengers ) worth of accessories and recovery/tools/aircompressor. This leaves only 340 kg for passengers, food and camping equipment.

Does she need to go on a diet ??????

EC Kerb Weight 2,583kg ( including full fuel )
GVM 3,240 kg (including passengers and load )
Gross Train Weight 6,740 kg ( including braked trailer )

It's the sad reality. If you're travelling you need a trailer to stay legal.

Just load up and go.......everybody else does, if only you didn't go over the weigh bridge you would never know.

Although I have a weight bridge at work.....it's difficult to stay under with a family of five and a POS Lux, hopefully the new defender will even the stakes

Or do what I do.... leave everyone else at home :D

I put all the gear in the camper trailer. My D3 weighed in at 3.08t at the rubbish dump with about 50kg of rubbish on board, me and a two year old. I had 180L of fuel in the tanks. It is something I am very aware of as I start to accessorise my D4.

Mine weighed in at 2750kg at the dump,on the way out,3/4 tank of fuel and driver, nothing else.

Many people have no idea that their vehicles are often way overloaded.

I recently saw a van with a bent factory fitted tow bar.Once i showed the owner the plate on the bar,max 1100kg,braked,he was amazed.:o

This seems to be a learning curve for many.

Maybe fix the overload problem by leaving the family at home and ancillary crap, and use my remaining 340kg for food and beer :) :):)

I can see a camper trailer coming to help with the weight problem. I guess you get extra storage room too... as well as some comfort :)

And the weight of 2860kg didn't include an additional spare wheel, roof rack or Gerry cans of diesel

The bigger the tyre size, and the heavier the tyre load rating, the heavier the tyre.So with five it all adds up.

And is one of the forgotten items when people are working out their vehicle weight.

Each LT is approximately 4-8kg heavier than the Standard tyre it replaces.

Hey Stuart02,

The spare wheel you weighed at 34kg, is that a LR alloy wheel ? LT tyres ?

Yeah, 275/45/20 Cooper LTZ (AT passenger construction) on a Range Rover 20 x 9.5 5-spoke alloy

Thanks Stuart. I suspect my compomotive 18" with BFG Ko2 265/60r18 probably weigh more than 34kg.

On different subject my friend has just bought a brand new D4 Landmark with 20" LR and he wants to change to AT tyres.

How do you like the Cooper LTZ ? My friend mainly wants tyres for road, snow and ice ( he likes skiing )

Just for reference, here are some of the wheel/tyre combination weights that I made a couple of years ago:

18"x8" LR D3/D4 18" alloy wheel and Goodyear Wrangler P255/60R18 = 28kg
17"x7" LR D3 alloy wheel and BF Goodrich KM2 MT LT245/70R17 = 36kg
17"x7" Dynamic steel wheel and BF Goodrich KM2 MT LT245/70R17 = 42kg

Note that it is also a lot more inertia to overcome and increased fuel economy - especially in traffic - is normal.

Yes, I've notice my fuel economy has gone up about an extra1 lt / 100km around the city since fitting my BFG KO2 ( compared to the original 19 LR wheels with standard Wranglers ) but haven't noticed muchdifference on the highway ( as not stopping and starting I guess ) . But generally fuel economy is quite reasonable for such a heavy vehicle.

Weekend trip to dump with family on board, so weighed in at 2.90t

Two adults, 2 little ones, half tank fuel.

Front bar and winch (plasma rope), Rhino platform roof rack with awning, duel battery.

cheers

I reckon my D3 would be one of the heavy weights - front ARB bar with winch, long range tank, kaymar rear bar and normally 2 adults and 4 kids onboard. Still, I'd like to add more weight in the form of rock sliders :)

Mine is the same. Weighed in at 3.08 Tonnes with a 2 year old on board. 180L of fuel and some green waste.

Haven't been to the dump for a while. Last time I went SWMBO found her way home by herself so it's not worth it.:wasntme::wasntme::wasntme:

I'm undecided about the LTZs TBH. They perform well on a variety of surfaces grip-wise - so for your mate they'd be very good in that respect. I've driven on plenty of different ATs - albeit on cars other than Land Rovers and smaller rims than 20s - but was surprised at the relative amount of noise and steering wheel feedback. It's not offensive but certainly noticeable. I can't say whether other brands would be better in the same profile and rim size. Fuel economy seems only marginally worse as far as I can tell.

For offroading there really isn't a heap of sidewall to play with (saw a local L320 again today with 285/50/20s and had buyer's regret again) and the side wall compound seems a bit soft - couple of gouges from day trips in sedimentary rock hill country.

We're about to hang a two week lap of the Flinders Ranges with the trailer so if driving reasonably they survive that, I'll be happy.

You guys would be buggered if you lived around Mascot.....I went for a run last week and noticed the side streets (residential) had signs saying 3T Limit.

Thanks Stuart02 for your feed back on 265/45r20 LTZ. I believe my friend is also looking at the nitto grappler 265/50r20 which is one profile thicker. I did try suggesting to my friend to pick up a second hand set of 19 inch rims, which at least have a thicker tyre for more comfort and steering stability.

Theres been some good reports on the Nittos. Yeah it's definitely horses for courses. I borrowed some 19" rims with general grabbers and the ride was significantly better, but around town and on good bitumen I actually missed the positive feedback and turn-in of the 20s.
