As the title says, has anyone else had dramas getting out uni's?
Brocks cars started the dreaded vibration last week. Today had a look and noticed a chip out of the rear uni cap, so assuming that this is the culprit.
When knocking out the uni caps had real difficulty getting the caps out, certainly not the easy tap out from one side and just pull off caps. Took a lot of belting, swearing to get them out.
The tool that previously did the right work on the car had them changed to greasable units but looks like he failed to grease the rear uni on the double cardan. Why put them in if you are not going to grease.
Hardest unis I have ever had to pull apart.
Off to CBC this week to get new unis and a centre bearing and rebuild. Hoping this is what the vibration was.

Didn't have any issues getting my UJs out or back together. From memory the centre bearing was interesting to get out.

If your going near Welshpool I'd suggest getting the UJs & centre bearing from Hardy Spicer (49 Banskia Road, Welshpool). They had everything on the shelf at far better prices than CBC or Statewide Bearings had. One of them didn't even recognise the part number for the centre bearing.

Not sure why not greasing them would make the caps hard to get out. The grease doesn't get to the outside of the caps, does it?

Time in place and rust would be the culprit, in my experience. And yes, they can be buggers.

Yeah, not referring the greasing to getting the cap out, Just cant understand why put in greasable units and then not grease them, the rear unit had no grease in it at all and appears to be the one that failed. It also looks like whoever did them last assembled and then painted the shaft, unis and all.

I used to laugh at the Haynes manuals when they said "gently tap out the Uni trunnions" An hour and a 5 lb hammer later.
Though I must say that RRC ones were not too bad , but those old POM rubbish cars could be a challenge
