Best Allen Key

Hey all,

I'm looking for a tough set of allen or hex keys ( I need metric only ).

I've had sidchrome, bohndus, and KC, and they all die in various ways.
shaft/shank twist, breakage, rounded hexes, ball tips snap.

I use these tools all day every day for work, servicing German made hydraulic tooling, and the Germans love their socket head screws.

They will cop quite a bit of abuse!

Snap on set definitely. Are you able to use impact hex sockets too once it's tight if possible I will move to the sockets for the extra strength.

I can use sockets on the bigger stuff, but a lot of it is 1.5mm to 5mm inhex, or in tight, hard to get spots.

Thought about getting some T-bars, and maybe some smaller sockets as my current set only goes down to 6mm.

My current inhex sockets are a sidchrome 1/2" drive (2-piece socket) set and they've done pretty well so far.

socket versions only the 1/4 drive range covers down to 1mm AND

you can get the inserts for the sockets seperately to the socket so if you snap one you dont have to replace the whole bit AND.

except for some of the smaller ones the bits are reversable so if you damage the end of one you can flip it over in the holder and keep working until you get it replaced.

Another for Snap on here - I've tortured some of mine over the years. Ive knackered a couple but nowhere near as many as any other brand and you can just buy the one you've stuffed to replace it rather than the whole set.

The most popular snap on allen key socket i use is a short 6mm 1/4 drive for undoing commodore seats. The bolts are locktited into the floor and also the seat rails on to the seat bases. Hard to undo but the small sized socket is perfect for that job. Broken a few sidchrome 1/4 drive ratchets and breaker bars but the snap on ratchet handles it great too. Most of my mechanics hand tools are snap on. Expensive but great

I use bohndus you can buy them separately at blackwoods. I use t&e for the 6mm and up with pipe. I also carry a few brass drifts to smack the heads down on the capscrew's and steel punches to close up the head when I rip the flats out. As soon as I see a shiny edge I get a new one. I do a lot of hydraulic work.

I have Snap-On, no better or worse than Bohndus and other good brands. Wouldn't be surprised if Bohndus and Snap-On keys came out of the same factory.
