Hi all,
Just looking on gumtree and came across this advert;
LAND ROVER SERIES 1 1950 PROTOTYPE ~ MAKE AN OFFER | Cars, Vans & Utes | Gumtree Australia Palerang Area - Braidwood | 1123390388 (http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/braidwood/cars-vans-utes/land-rover-series-1-1950-prototype-make-an-offer/1123390388)
Please excuse my lack of detailed knowledge of Series vehicles, but what on earth is a 1950 prototype? Is this actually something out of the ordinary or is he merely trying to sell a normal 1950 Series 1 which has been modified over the years, to an unsuspecting chump?
Ta muchly,

The claim that it has a jeep chassis would make it either 1. The very first centre steer prototype LR of 1947ish, or 2. A farmer's friend converted to make use of all that was left of two similar vehicles.
My money is on option 2.
Or, Option 3. It could just be a false claim.

Wow! It is a beast, don't think it is going to receive the $25k they are asking!

is it just me, or does anybody else also think he has nicked his own door tops and faced them backwards, to make that thing over the tray?
Assuming the panels are original, that accords with being a '53 model (as per chassis number) - its not a lights behind or through grill model..

Probably a bit of a bitza, even apart from the Holden engine. But still, you could consider it a bit of history. But I would put the value at well under $10,000, even allowing for the fact that it is registered and presumably roadworthy.

From what you can see it's a Land Rover chassis.
The front crossmember is still there so not quite sure how the Holden was squeezed in unless the top is cut out. Bonnet doesn't seem to close properly though.
The door tops want putting back on the doors and that monstrosity on the back thrown away.
Body looks fairy straight so worth several thousand but I think the asking price is very ambitious.......

The Holden 161 motor wasn't released until 1966 - with the HR model, so there is no way it is original.

Chassis is definitely Land Rover, you can tell by the front and rear cross members. The 80" wheelbase would be the only Jeep similarity.

Problem is there are plenty of people who dont know any thing adout S1s that will take his word for it & pay big money. I can remember when I was looking after the S1 register in thevRover Car Club Qld I had all these people with 1945 L/Rs ringing me most of them had S2s & when I told them the first L/R came out in 48 they would want to argue about it.

I get similar responses when showing the ex-mil 88" S2A's, the usual conversation starts by saying 'we had one of these down on the farm, great these Series 1's arn't they' or the other 'I drove these in the army we had guns blazing out the sides of them while driving around the range, shooting up everything' with my limited experience with the military and weapons I know that it's B/S big time and yes they all want to argue their point, clearly the vehicle in question is a bitza, I just hope that some poor sod really hanging out for an early example has done their homework, cheers Dennis

Yes people are always asling if my 80 is ex Aust military, they think Aust military had L/Rs since day 1. I been out to look at peoples L/Rs they have bought being told by seller it is a S1 80 & then I have to tell them they have bought a S2 . Or 88inch.
