Managed to put a big 15cm crack through the top of my front windscreen yesterday, so need to arrange a new one. Having not gone through this before, but previously seen various comments about leaking ones I did some searching and reading, from that, I have concluded:

Needs to be genuine Pilkington Optikool glass - aftermarket alternatives have fitment issues.
Requires a new DCB101510 Windscreen Top Finisher seal part.
Bonnet should be removed to facilitate the removal of the plenum below the windscreen without damaging it.

Does the Safari snorkel need to be removed for this procedure or just the external a-pillar trims?

Anything else to know?

Anyone able to advise on expected price to pay? I note that Fluids post in http://www.aulro.com/afvb/discovery-2/139065-new-windscreen-fitted.html#post1577358 indicates about $1,000.00.
I noticed that Britcar in the UK have replacement OEM windscreen and seals for AUD$200.00. Out of interest I've enquired about the possibility and cost of freight.

Did something similar to yours (don't ask!) when we were in Nhulunbuy. I paid for it to be replaced and was advised to buy the A Pillar trims as they are prone to breaking. I did that but the originals came off without breaking. Windscreen was non-genuine and did leak - although only during a true tropical downpour in the Wet Season.

That screen eventually chipped and so the next one was an insurance claim and installed by a national installer. Having sold the vehicle I can't go out and look at it so am not 100% sure of its origin. Trims are still the same as after the first screen and to the best of my knowledge the screen does still not leak.

I believe the bonnet came off both times. The first time the finisher seal was not used and that may be why it did leak. Due to it being an insurance claim I don't know what was used second time around.

I called Hobart Autoglass < Yellow Pages? | Your Local Australian Business Directory (http://www.yellowpages.com.au/tas/kingston/hobart-autoglass-13893464-listing.html) >, as recommended by Justin Cooper, this morning for a quote and they're getting back to me. He's like he's done a few of these before and confirmed that he removes the bonnet for the removal and fitment.

I've requested a quote on both genuine and aftermarket glass. He advises that he usually uses aftermarket due to it's price and availability and the last time it was genuine he thinks it was around $700.00 for the glass and $200.00 for the seal.

British 4WD/Jagspares advises that the seal through them is $156.20 - not sure of brand though.

Anyone got a success story with aftermarket replacement front windscreen glass?

G'day. First time I had the pleasure of an advancing stone, I insisted and insurance (APIA) finally agreed to fit genuine glass, on the basis that this forum warns of leakages with after market and they'd end up doing it twice. That was about 4 years ago, then 2 years ago met another stone.
This time I agreed to go with after market. So far no leaks. Both done by Windscreens O'Briens in Cannington and both times bonnet off, and snorkel loosened.
Cheers Gavin
PS - 2 man job obviously

Just got a quote for after market and it was 375 with top seal so thought that was a good price. Windscreens O'Brien and told him about the leaking problem that shorts out the fuse box and recons he has done heaps with no leaks so finger crossed.

I've read all that with interest. Ours was replaced under insurance. Leaked. The began a process of in out back and forth and I cannot remember how many times I took it back to be rectified. Eventually I gave up and we have only the occasional drip. I cannot (and neither can the installer) for the life of me understand why it should leak with massive amounts of goo. Where is the water getting in and why should an after market screen leak where the genuine part does not? Leak is at the top.

Hello
I need to replace the windscreen on my D2 and was wondering if anyone who's done it recently may be able to advise on their experience and source... I'm based in Melbourne. Have read too many stories of windscreens being changed or refitted three times in a month.
Much appreciated.

Had our 2002 D2 windscreen replaced late last year. Just went on line and found the cheapest option as the car is really just a load carrier now.
Went well, the guys were careful and cost <$300 done in our driveway. No leaks so far.
We are in Melbourne
