Trailer Construction Requirements

So lately I've been thinking about building a single axle trailer to tow behind my 110.

I've been reading ADRs, VSBs, Circulars, etc.

No where that I've looked is there hard information on what materials and member dimensions are required for a home made trailer to meet Australian standard for compliance and approval.

Is this information located anywhere?

I'm trying to decide between a 750kg and 1,500kg trailer, and I just want to know how big the RHS/SHS/Channel/Beams would need to be to pass inspection.

It will need to be local requirements you'll have to satisfy, not an Australian Standard. In Victoria for example, you can weld up anything you like and as long as the lights work and it has brakes if it's gross mass is going to be over 750 kg and they'll just measure it and register it after supplying you a VIN.

It's only over 4,500kg - ie truck trailers, that need to pass a road worthy before registering over here.

You're best off speaking to your local registration authority on your local requirements.

What will be the main use for the trailer?

Drop into a couple of trailer places to get an idea of size you need for your application. There are soooo many ways you can do it.

Basically in QLD all they worry about is overall dimensions, lights, reflectors Eric based in the guidelines on Queensland transport website.

Just plan on electric brakes and work it out from there,,
even 750kg trailers need brakes,, but you will only find that out for yourself afterwoods ;)

I don't believe it is specified, it's something you will need to work out in your engineering and it will change based on trailer design and intended use. Be able to justify your selection and always apply the coroners test.

Call into a Martins trailer parts store,they are very helpful.
I built my own,basically you apply for a vin number and go for it.Go for a 2 tonne gross trailer(mine is),you will need brakes,but not a break away system.Martins trailer parts have everything you need at a good price,quality parts.They will custom make an axle to match the track and wheel offset of your 110.Mine was custom made to match a D2,Defender is much easier/cheaper;);););)
