Team mates, I have searched the site but can't find this exact problem. Under acceleration, there is a transient throbbing vibration (low frequency) right under the front pax seat. Directly underneath is the transfer case and drive shafts. It only occurs after about 2K RPM and stops after I back off. Sometimes it isn't there at all. The car is the TD6 with 225k on the clock. My LR mech drove and confirmed the vib but offered only suggestions including uni joint wear or transmission mount wear. None of these look too bad at all. The front shaft is a replaced unit (per re-call). Thoughts/ideas/options???
Thanks for reading.
Cheers

Based on what I found on mine at 220kkm, I wouldn't count out the centre bearing on the rear tailshaft or the Uni joint in there - both completely shagged on mine.

Started as a vibration, developed into a clunk on acceleration, finished with a bang, bang, bang when it collapsed.

Thanks Homestar. I found this procedure from yourself here: http://www.aulro.com/afvb/l322-range-rover/238515-l322-rear-tailshaft-removal-refurbishment.html
Was that to fix the problem????

Yes, I didn't manage to diagnose it as a vibration or a clunk - I actually thought there may be something wrong with the rear diff, but the bearing collapsed about 3KM from home and that sorted the diagnosis for me as once home, I got under the car and grabbed the tailshaft and it was just flapping around.

The new owner of the car may be able to shed some light on how it is going with a couple of thousand KM on it - I sold the vehicle just after doing this.

G`day ,

i didn`t want to comment until i actually drove it , which i was able to yesterday .

Wife really likes driving it and it may seem strange but i`ve seen a change in the way she sees the world so i`m happy to get a drive when i can .

Yes , she has done a few thousand KM .

There is no sign of any vibration at any time or speed up to a bit over the speed limit , that i can feel or hear so all good , this was a 100km trip .

If anyone is interested there is a tailshaft complete on ebay it`s in the Blue Mountains and requires pickup it been listed a few times the bloke hasn`t had any interest at $10 and after Gavs work i have no need for it .

Mates, as a follow up... it was the centre universal and bearing support that had failed. The uni had virtually seized and as it wasn't allowing the shaft to rotate freely, the bearing supportive rubber tore away (see pics). The uni bearings are burnt and it had seized. I recommend if you have an L322 with 200+k's on the clock, have yours checked. The uni is not available OEM, but my mech was able to use an alternative. See thread below for a repair if you want to do it yourself. The total cost for me was $750.00 including parts. I am pleased I had this done prior to a trip Brissy to Nowra return coming up shortly. Good luck and thanks for the feedback and tips.

Identical failure to mine. Shows it wasn't a one off and that the higher KM vehicles will start needing this done. If that $750 was a drive in, drive out price, that sounds about right. I think around 4 to 5 hours labour plus parts would be right on the money. Thankfully I was able to do all the spanner swinging on mine, so I think it came to around $200 for the parts when I did mine.

Do we have part numbers that we could chuck into the sticky section for future reference if the bits aren't easy to find?

Lads, Hardy Spicer in Oxley, Queensland have the centre bearing and universal in stock. www.hardyspicer.com (http://www.hardyspicer.com). They ordered for me, but my mech sourced them from his supplier. Cost was about $120.00 each (I think). If you need them, I'd contact them quickly as they might send them back. I'll find out what part numbers my mech sourced and post shortly. Cheers.

They went to a 1 piece shaft at some stage - maybe about then, but I'm not sure.
