View Full Version : Upper tailgate opening by itself?

This is a new one to me, I've heard/read all about tailgates not opening, but not about them opening by themselves.

Daughter borrowed my 2010 D4 for a weekend away and sent me a message asking about the upper tailgate opening by itself and the lights coming on.
Said started doing it when parked for the night and they had plenty of attempts to close it, checking it was shut and didn't rattle.

But multiple times it 'opened', including coming half open.
I suggested locking the car.

Then another message today, tailgate opened while driving along the road, depositing a few of (my) camping items on the road, fortunately not into another car.

I wonder about the keyfob playing up, but couldn't think of anything else.
Will have the car back tomorrow, for now told them to gaffer the hatch shut.

Any ideas or similar experience?

Keyfob in pocket? I've opened mine a few times by pressure in the pocket.

It was apparently opening intermittently with the fob sitting in the car.
Got a message a few hours ago that it had stopped by itself.

Will have the car back tomorrow.

Easy to check if you have the other Keyfob, use it and see if it still happens.

At the moment I'm using the same key fob to see if the problem comes back (which it hasn't yet).
I checked the fault codes and the external release (the door/tailgate handle/switch) was reported as intermittant. Cleared the fault and will check that again in a few days.
Over the weekend I'll pull out the mechanism and have a look for corrosion/gunge etc.

More info: Apparently the hatch would unlatch while the key was sitting in the vehicle, plus at 10-15sec after starting (the open after starting symptom I also found reported on the UK site).
If you started the car, waited for it to unlatch, shut it and it would then stay that way until next restart.
Then during Sunday afternoon it stopped playing games.... went back to working normally.

Tailgate handle assembly was full of 5 years worth of red bulldust/mud/gunge, if that was an influence I would pick the connector other than the switch itself.
Cleaned it all out, cleaned the electrical connections, blasted everything with various amounts of liquids and air, put it back together.

Update: None....
Issue has not retruned, although I doubt it was the dust/mud in the handle/switch/electrics anyway.

I did find another LROCV member seeing the same problem on a regular basis.
So appears it is not common, but also not completely isolated.
