Herbert Henry 'Dally ' Messenger, born Duke St., Balmain, raised at Double Bay, three years in top grade rugby union, six years in rugby league. A total of 198 games, scoring 1349 points, with 80 tries. Rightly given the nickname, the " Master ", A leading player in rugby union at the time, Dally was approached by three key figures in the birth of rugby league- Henry Hoyle, James Giltinan, and Victor Trumper .

Henry Hoyle : became the chief mouthpiece of rugby league in the formative days , once a blacksmith, he was described as the first link in the chain binding the ALP and rugby league. Hoyle held the seats of Redfern and Surry hills in the State Legislative Assembly.

James Giltinan : an opportunist and entrepreneur who put the money up for the games that started rugby league. He stumped up the money for the first Kangaroo tour of Great Britain, in 1908, and was bankrupted because of it. A cricketer, and prominent cricket umpire, and a mate of Victor Trumper, said at the time to be the Worlds greatest batsman. Giltinan was the founder of two breakaway arms of sport, the NSW Rugby League, and the NSW Sailing League for 18 footers, both of which thrive to this day.

Victor Trumper : Champion cricketer, rugby union player for South Sydney, a generous business man who would give away items from his sports store to cricket mad kids. Died at the age of 37, of Brights disease.

These three men used to meet at " Vics Place ", to discuss the formation of the NSW Rugby League. It all came to a head when Albert Baskerville's New Zealand "All Golds" were about to come to Sydney to play, a 15 a side rugby game, followed by three matches of the breakaway rugby league. The NZ team played in the black with fern leaf jumper, but were given the derisory term of " All Golds", by the rugby authorities back home, for selling out their amateurism. So New Zealand had a large part in the birth of rugby league in Australia.

The NSW Football league was formed at a meeting in Batemans Hotel, in George St, August 8 , 1907. Messenger made history by being asked to go along with the NZ side to tour Great Britain, as a guest player. He played 29 of 35 games , 7 tries and 60 goals, and was the tours top point scorer. helping NZ beat England 2-1 in the first ever test series tour of Great Britain by a National rugby league team.
