101 Engine Oil Cooler Inlet/Outlet

For the 101 people - I cannot find anything to tell me which pipe on the engine oil cooler is the inlet (from the engine) and the outlet (from the to cooler to the engine). Is not obvious form looking at the cooler as the oil does not just go in at the top and come out the bottom as there are some cross linkages there.

So is the inlet the top pipe that is bent or the bottom pipe that is straight?

I have just crawled under the front of my 101.
The hoses to a standard 101 oil pump is the bent pipe on the oil cooler goes to the pump fitting closest to the chassis.
The straight inner most cooler fitting/hose runs to the oil pump fitting closest to the sump/ block.
Looking at the design of the oil cooler I don't think it is going to matter which way you flow the oil though it, it will cool the oil exactly the same.
Are we dropping in a different motor ???????? The fan and shroud look different to a standard 101.

Thanks Ron - but do you know if outlet on the oil filter housing nearest the chassis is the inlet or the outlet?

I agree that it probably does not matter which way the oil runs but I want to be sure in case it does.

Now the oil temp sensor screws into the top of the oil cooler so I assume that is on the engine side as I guess there is little pointy measuring the cooler oil going make to the engine.

Try disconnecting the hoses and coil and have someone crank the engine, while you see which hose spews oil,

The straight pipe goes to the outlet closest to the motor. The bent pipe goes to the outlet closest to the chassis.
I'll post up pics tonight, if I remember.

Thanks Mick - yes I know, but which pipe takes the oil from the engine to the cooler and which pipe takes the oil back to the engine.

As Ron has noted, the engine is not a Rover 3.5.

If you are using the 101 oil filter mount you are probably using a distributor type front cover and can spin up the oil pump with a power drill and a suitable adaptor shaft. All the dissy style RV8 engines that I've rebuilt get the drill treatment for a couple of minutes before starting to fill all the oil galleries. Along the way you'll be able to determine which hose connector is outwards flow.

Ok it would seem that no one knows the answer to my question so I will take it that the plumbing that has the oil temp gauge sensor in it is the inlet and connect it up accordingly.

If that is correct then it is the top bent pipe in the pic.

Have you gone to the dark side and filled your tank with diesel? I'm guessing by the space that you have between the oil cooler and fan that its a 4 cyl.. The Cummins filled that hole.. ��
