Hi, just wondering if anyone out there with a series 3 has ever had the oil leak from their rear diff and go into the brake drum and if it was a hard job to repair it? I have been told by an old mechanic that its not real hard to fix, but was looking for another opinion and any ideas on cost and who might have parts to do the job.......... Thanks Brad

make sure you replace the brake shoes as well and wipe up all the oil out of the drum......</span>

also check the surface the seal runs on.
You may have to instal a Speedi-sleeve to fix if worn. Works a treat.

and it is a very easy job the hardest part of the job is jacking the car up and removing the wheel style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif

I had it happen on the front of my landy, turned out to be the bearing seal. Even I managed to replace it. the rears would be even simpler style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif

Not an uncommon problem, easy and cheap to fix. The minimum parts you need is the seal, available from Four Wheel Drives at the top of this page or virtually any bearing retailer. Strictly speaking you also need a new lockwasher, and if you have not done it before, a tube spanner to fit the hub nuts, and you will need a new gasket for the drive flange (or make one), and probably the felt seal on the splines (not on Salisbury axle on lwb). You should check the surface the seal runs on - unless it is a late S3 this ring is replaceable. If it is a late S3 you need to replace the stub axle or sleeve the sealing surface.
Check the bearings for wear or roughness and replace if there is any doubt - they are quite cheap from any bearing retailer.
You will need to clean the brake drum and replace the brake shoes both sides if either side is oil contaminated. Remove the axle breather and check it is not blocked, as this may have caused the leak. Note that if the wheel bearings are loose this will also cause the seal to leak.
Worth getting a manual that describes the procedure.

Thanks to all that have given me advise. It is greatly appreciated. It is a 1979 series 3 long wheelbase 6 cyl with the salsbury diff, ex army.
Someone could save me the trouble of fixing it and buy it off me, I just got a new radiator to put in it, couldnt believe it was $500. If anyone is interested give me $1000 and take it away style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif
