View Full Version : Electrics and ignition problems

So I was away with the family on the weekend and experienced some weird electrical issues. Was going around a corner and the fan and stereo momentarily cut out and came back on. About a hundred metres up the road and it cut out again this time with a burning smell. Got the kids out of the car and looked around, couldn't trace it anywhere, can't find any fuses blown. Got it going again and continued on. Next time I tried to go some where I can't get it started. It will kick over fine but as soon as I release the key it cuts out. It will keep running if I hold the key just of the starter motor kicking but as soon as I release it it stops. Now the stereo and fan are gone completely. Can't find any fuses blown or problems behind dash. Any ideas??? luckily I got it going enough to get back from holidays and I thought ignition had sorted itself out but it hasn't and the problem is back today.

Its a 2.4 tdci 2011.

Ignition switch falling apart? Not sure if LR managed to keep the old lock in production for that long. The backs of them used to get loose, easily fixed once removed from the dash.

I think you're probably right bee utey was just going I might have missed something and there was an easy fix

Sounds like you've already had a poke around, but in case it's of use, Brett from Roaming The Outback just did a video on removing the dash so you can track down gremlins.

Do i need to remove instrument cluster to get at the back of the ignition barrel or can i just come from underneath through the steering column shrouds?

You will have to remove the lower instrument cluster trim(2 bolts) but not the actual cluster.
If found it easier to remove the steering wheel also as it makes removing the 2 steering column trims easier and gives more working space.

Back of ignition barrel seems to all be intact but when I touched the back door lock jam there appears to be a current running g through it. That and my battery was flat this morning. I have to admit electronics aren't my strong point. Am I on over my head or can I nut this out
