View Full Version : Who Will Be Watching Bathurst?

4th October 2016, 04:55 PM
Well, I will.
I've been watching it every year sinse TV coverage started.
My special Bathurst "Event" is my Bathurst "Breakfast", which Wifey cooks for me prior to race start on Sunday, every year.
My "Bathurst Breakfast", is fried eggs, bacon, a couple of sausages, tomatoes, mushrooms, & a couple of slices of fried bread.
Yummee, I can see & taste it now.
I watch the total telecast from Thursday.
This year, owing to it being the last year that Garth Tander is with the Holden Racing Team, I'm hoping that He & Luffy will have a win.
However, 888 is very strong, so I'm thinking one of their cars is a good chance.

Big yes from me, I'll be watching it. Wouldn't miss it. Well, I'll be watching that and anything I can stream from the Hawaii Ironman triathlon world championships.
I hadn't watched the F1 for a long time, but after watching Malaysia the other day I think that I'll be watching that again from now on also.

I usually only watch the start and finish. Once upon a time I used to go to Bathurst parties and drink lots of beer and eat prawns and watch the whole race. With two little kids I can't ignore them for that long.

Best race in years, & what a GREAT result,...i was cheering for car 2, but the result was good, just shows that the little guy can win.
Sitting with wifey at the moment, enjoying a nice bottle of red, & waiting for the "Brock Movie",..which promises to be even more interesting than the race.
Can't wait for next year.

So Red Bull are contesting the 15 second penalty.
FWIW,i recon it was an unfortunate racing incident....
Whincup did what he should after pushing the volvo onto the grass, tried to readdress.
The rest was a racing accident.
Just my 2 cents worth.
It was another fantastic race.

Interesting,...I didn't know that,.....actually that could be interesting, because that's what I thought it was,...a "racing incident",......Jamie would be the last person to cause something like that,....actually he would do his absolute best to avoid such,.....so why was blame attached to him?......I don't know.
Let's see how any of the so called "experts" would react in such a situation.

Actually Red Bull are very lucky they got a penalty that can be reversed.
If you look closely at the incident,Tander didn't see the Volvo, which he then hit.
He would have been looking at Whincup, aiming to get past.
All happens in a split second.....

I hope the decision is not reversed.
The stewards made their decision, I mean , really , Whincup caused the incident.....it was preventable .....he could have made a better move later.....he had the speed and the time.
I'm sure Tander hit Whincup before he hit the Volvo.

What a darn shame that happened , I reckon the finish would have been even better had they all had to see if they had the fuel to finish.
I am no expert but whincup would have not made that pass 10/10 times , but he tried to do the right thing and we will never know how things would have panned out.
judging by the reaction of pit straight plenty think the right decision was made.

You have to have an "REC" (license) to run the car, and you have to run the car in every race,...if you do not rock up, you cop a sizeable financial penalty.
You may think they are "clone cars", & it's true that they do have to run with a set of rules, but you may be quite surprised, that "underneath the skin", even cars of the same brand may be quite different in the way in which they can be "engineered" /built. And that is why you do not see real close ups of the mechanicals on TV,....because all teams do different stuff, which they do not wish to disclose to other competitors.
I was looking for an HRT Car 2 win, and they drove a good, tough, race, until.....

In that case you probably remember the days when one of the big questions about the race was, "How long before the wheels fall off the Studebakers?" :)
One of the few times I have watched the whole race was when the Celica carried the world's first in-car-camera.

I don't agree. I don't think Whincup did anything wrong at all, he made a fair pass, McLaughlin actually made contact with him as he turned in, Whincup was already 2/3 past him at that stage. Then Whincup slowed to allow McLaughlin back where he was but Tander was in the back of him. When McLaughlin came back on he had to make sure he was clear but took Tander out. How the hell can that be Whincups fault? We will wait until the outcome of the protest hearing I suppose.

If it was as you say, why was Whincup penalised by the officials.? McLaughlin had the race line , whincup was wrong by trying to pass and that why whincup tried to redress, if he didn't think he was wrong he would have continued at full speed.
That's how it was whincup's fault and by his action he knew it as well.

You didn't miss the Studebakers by much then. They raced in 1964.
They also had a tendency to run out of brakes. Not something you want to happen at Mt Panorama. :)

I love the sound of a V8, but, I would have loved to have seen how the Turbo Falcons would have competed with the V8s over the distance. You can really wind up the wick on them, obviously reliability would suffer. They can suck the juice to.
In my opinion I would have liked the cars to have stayed as close to street legal as possible. I reckon this would have been better for the Aussie car industry. "Win on Sunday, sell on Monday"

Well, in the near future, you will be happy, because racing will not be confined to V8s.
Part of 888's new deal with Holden is to develop a V6 race engine, and I believe Nissan are also looking at a V6 based on some GTR engineering. Prodrive & Penske are looking at the possibility of running a Mustang, & there is hope of a new manufacturer being involved.
Watch out for further developments!!...Pickles.

Interpretation of the rules. A lot of passing happened on that corner without incident and a few touches as well but the cars stayed on the track. When contact is made like that, you redress. Whincup was trying to redress when Tander got into the back of him, Whincup had nowhere to go. McLaughlin then came back onto the track and took Tander out. I think Tander has some blame in that incident as well.
Looking at the replay, Whincup was almost half a car length past McLaughlin when McLaughlin cut back in and hit him.
Look at the last lap when Van Gisbergen tried to get up the inside of Davison on Forest Elbow. Almost pushed him off there as he was nudging the back corner.
Reading about it, if a penalty needed to be given, it should have been 10 championship points, not 15 seconds.

I disagree , look at the replay from front on, Whincup locks up the rear passenger side wheel and slides into McLaughlin , Tander is off on the race line, Whincup got it wrong, locks up and hits McLaughlin forcing him off. That was what caused the chain reaction , whincup knew it and tried to make amends.
Every other pass that happened that day no one tried to redress , they waited for the stewards to say so then redressed- ie Kelly when he locked up on the start straight .
Whincup knew straight away he stuffed up , otherwise he would have powered on .
He got what he deserved , some would say he got off lightly.

Regardless of how McLaughlin ended up off the track, once you are off you dont have right of way, so rather than back off the pace and come back on the track 2 positions down, he ended coming back on the track with less control and ended up into Tander.
That split second choice of being a hot head and less professional cost him a car, a race and no doubt lost some good will with Tander.
McLaughlin knew this after the fact and apologised to Tander/team.
You wont see Whincup walking down to another team with an apology.

Ill it was safe Tander would not have been into the back of him& could have stayed behind Wingcup & there would have been a good chance the Volvo would not have hit Tander.
Wingcup was sliding when he went into the side of the Volvo so was not in controĺ.

I don't know, the video is a bit inconclusive, but it looks like Whincup did slide the rear out coming into the corner but he didn't actually slide into McLaughlin, McLaughlin turned into him. The car wasn't sliding when he got hit. I still believe the move was fair and McLaughlin actually hit Whincup.
