Does anyone out there use skype? It is a FREE voip service. What this means is that you can make calls for FREE over the internet to anyone that also has skype style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif
You can also use skypeout to dial people on their normal telephones for very reasonable rates style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif

Yep, I use it a bit. Mostly I only use the chat option for people in Australia, I have found that voice calls often seem to break up. I do use the voice a bit to call my sister in the Solomon Islands I bit though.

It's sort of okish with dial up. Give it a try. If you get a good dial up you'll probably be ok style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif Of course, refrain from doing anything on your PC that would be trying to use bandwidth while making a call. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif

2 years ago I got married and brought my wife back to Switzerland with me.
For the 3 years before that when I was in Switzerland and my (then girlfriend) was in Australia, I was using VoIP using nothing more than Yahoo! Messenger... though of course you could use MSN messenger as well.
Worked well enough, even though she only had dial-up.
I looked at Skype, it was ok'ish. Didn't need yet another program on my 'puter though so kept with the other messenger products..
Not that any of you mob would wanna talk with me anyway  style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif

Skype is awesome :!:
I recently went to the USA and had broadband in my hotel room. I think I paid 10 Euro (about $16 Aus dollars) for approx 200 minutes to a landline. The setup I had in my hotel room was, broadband, headset and skype. And I was calling a Australian landline (My girlfriend style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif) Call quality was pretty good, would say 90% of the time you couldn't tell the difference !!!
Have also tried calling one of my mates in QLD and he had Skype installed on his computer too, so it was computer to computer, call quality was good on that too....
Give it a go, doesn't cost that much !!!
Matt.

I use it all the time to talk to a mate in Cairns. We are both on broadband and it is as good as using the phone. Problem is we are both surfing the net at the same time so the conversations tend to be a bit vague. Cheers,

I use it occasionally for voice calls instead of using messenger, its peer to peer instead of going thru another server so audio quality is usually pretty good.

I use skype for the audio and MSN for the video feed. The audio is much clearer on the calls I make on skype than on the other just mute the MSN and watch the jumpy image.

We've had installed for around 12 months now, but the rest of the family is reluctant to use it - they all use MSN. So while it we've had it for a long time, we've really only used it a couple of times.
One of those times was on my PDA wireless in the house to my wife in the study ... an interesting experiment, but not really something that we would do often.

I've got to say the best part of skype now is the really good video. :)

I think I com under the internectually, technologically challenged,
not really the changes are too hard to keep up with,
I used to talk to a friend in canada with one of the msn or similar programs, it was ok, then a capped phone plan for o/s phone calls,
well i use the phone now. ( at $1.98 for as long as we talk, its fine and cheap for me.)
Now to my question
skype is that only skype to skype or can you use it to talk to say a landline if the other party hasn;t got it. ( if that makes sense)

If you have a skype account you can call a land line. Skype also let's you set up numbers in other countries so people can call you at a "local" rate if they don't have a computer.
I've used skype for some years PC to PC but of late have found Windows Live Messenger to be more reliable and with better voice and video quality.

It works quite well. Its only 3c a minute in most countries. :)
You can even use it for quick local calls and be way ahead if they are short.

People still use Skype?!
Its kinda like, KaZaA - eventually people realised how crappy it is and have since moved on.
The cutesey add-ons and colourfulness of Skype wont be a good selling point for long.
These days VOIP offerings from most ISP's or standalone carriers like MyNetFone have better rates, more reliable services - and theres no childish crap attached.
"Here's your line, and your number - off you go!"

VoIP has been around longer than Skype (Which is little more than a proprietary VoIP of sorts, anyway), but adoption for the home is slower due to the technical challenges that aren't there with the chat/voice/video offerings like Skype, Yahoo, MSN, Google, etc.

Skype is renowned as one of the best of it's type with quality that's better than most of the other options. :)
Also, 3c a minute to dial out to most places in the world sounds good to me!! No ongoing charges either. I don't know how they make money out of it.

Planning on using skype as only telephone access. Skymesh (starting to expand across Australia) offer great rates and bundle broadband in with it. Can even take your current phone number to wherever you are going. If worried about the usage, they offer huge down/upload access for not much.

Now my daughter has moved to Scotland.. she uses vodafone mobile. Is it possible to make VOIP calls to mobiles... and does she have to pay anything using her mobile to recieve VOIP or skype call? I'll ring vodafone charge for vodafone - vodafone mobile calls internationally? guess that's a question better asked to vodafone.
Internode is my broadband carrier .. they have VOIP ... anyone experienced with it??? I tried skype years ago but wasn't that impressed....
Too many choice for an old bloke....

You can call a UK mobile from a VoIP operator, but it will be nowhere near as cheap as calling a UK fixed line. Even if you have her set you up a UK VoIP account and then use it from over here, it will still be in the region of 10-15p/min! Check out the Aus VoIP operators (Pennytell, BBPGlobal, plus the ISP offerings) to see which is cheapest.
It's free to receive standard voice calls on any UK mobile - the originating network (i.e. VoIP, Telstra, Skypeout or whatever) is irrelevant. Only in the US does the called party pay on mobile calls, which is why it's just as cheap for you or I to call into a US mobile as it is a US landline with the same area code.
Voda Aus - Voda UK internationally will likely be the same as Voda Aus - any UK mobile, as the two networks share only the same name - they are different operators in real terms. The best you get is when you roam onto the "same" network when travelling and potentially benefit from reduced roaming charges.
If she only has a mobile, find out if it's 3G and on a decent data plan, and then she could use Skype or any of the other VoIP operators over the mobile's data channel - either through a PC or directly if the handset is a smart phone which can take the Skype app or a SIP softphone.
Hope this makes some sense. ;)

I use Skype daily to chat to my fellow GCLRO members - mainly to give Stevo68 a few serves during the day:D:D :wasntme: - and also use it to talk to my family back home in ther UK with voice and web cam.....works great and means I can parade the ids in front of the camera each time so my folks can see how the littlies have grown:D:D
Well worth it IMO but I have only ever used it on a broadband connection.
