View Full Version : Jate Rings

I have just had a pair of jate rings made up for my Disco style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif .
Does it make it any weaker if I bolt them on top of the steering guard instead of bending it out and putting the jate rings underneath (directly onto the chassis)?. They are only held by one bolt so I don't think it should matter  .
It seems like everybody else has bent the steering guard to fit recovery points under it. Is it worth the trouble to do that?
Thanks
Andrew

Hi Andrew , now this is just my opinion and dealing with fabrication for a long time . the jate rings you have seen dont bend much so its easier to bend the steering guard over them thats about it there is no strength lost as the bolt is doin the work and as long as u put a grade 8 bolt or better in there and its kept tight you will be fine

When I measured up the jate rings I made it so that it would fit over the steering guard. Since then I have been thinking of putting a slightly thicker plate underneath (against the chassis) that goes between the two bolts. Would it make it any stronger to do do it that way - or it wouldn't need it?
Thanks

That appears to be a very poorly sized bolt for the job. The jate ring is pulling onto a threaded section instead of the bolt shank.
Query? Does the jate ring pivot on the bolt when fitted, or are they set and bolted up tight gripping the chassis rail?

The one's I had made look like Defender 200TDI's, just not as pretty.
Zook I think you need to use them in pairs with a bridle between them to distribute the weight and then they are (hopefully style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif ) strong enough.
Disconut they are bolted up tight so they don't move

I got them put on yesterday. They were a bit more trouble than I expected  . I also put in raised Kings springs on the rear. They made a real difference.

That's right. Apparently the chassis on a Disco is not strong enough for a snatch recovery. If you use the two jate rings the load is spread betwen the two sides of the chassis and reduces the load enough that it doesn't rip the bolts out of the mounting points. Hopefully 8) :? 8O

I had no idea what it stood for   . I think they were originally designed for tie down points, but have been used for recovery since then.

Now that is a worry - we have what is supposedly a top class 4wd and its chassis is not strong enough to be snatched style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif
This is enough to send me back to an old series 1 - anyone want to buy a 11 year old disco with only 101,000 km on it.
What I will get for it will just about get me into a nice series 1. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif

Hi all ,
New to the forum . Wondering where is the best location to install a Jate ring on the front end of a 03 DiscoII with OEM bumper ? As the front bumper sit so low , afraid that any recovery work may damage the bumper . A picture would be very appreciated .
Jate ring on the rear of the Disco is no problem at all .

Now thats a new one! Who told you that?
Disco 2 chassis took a 12 ton load before it tore the chassis during recovery point testing a few weeks ago.
The Disco has one of the strongest chassis on the market today.
And I've performed countless snatch recoveries using single and dual point attachments....
Do not fear, the trucks strong enough.
