If you have a Disco 2 AND you have a cargo barrier? then? might I suggest that rather than waiting as I did for your rear door lock actuator to stop working with all your critical gear stuck inside and a client waiting and with no tools or equipment at your disposal to break into the back of the car then you go out TODAY and buy an actuator and perform the easy task of replacing it.

I had to sneak into a yard and steal a hanging pot plant hook, use the hook to thread through the cargo barrier. Wrench a bag and a case out of the way and then make the perfect hook in the end to grab the door lever.

It's worse than breaking down. When you can't get at the stuff you need then the reality really sinks in.

All my tools were in the back too.

So? disregard this advice at your peril because even if you smash a window? damage the rear door or whatever you do? it won't be pretty.

On a side note, when replacing the actuator, if you do have a cargo barrier, then don't bother reattaching the lock knob. I had heard of it getting jammed by camping gear so I left it out.

Happy travels.

I just bought mine from Land Rover Parts up here.

It was over $200.

I had this issue when the battery was out during a bunch of work and had the cargo barrier in. I meant to fit some kind of bonnet release type thing that comes to the back seats after that.
I'd forgotten though - I wish they'd left the key lock in the back door for this reason.

Hhmmm .... don't have a barrier, but my drawers are high enough to cover the inside door release lever ...

Now I'm thinking ......

Don't laugh ! :p

I have also had the cargo blind prevent the lock from coming up.
When I designed my cargo barrier I made a removable section that was big enough for me to fit through - just for the above reasons.

Had this happen to a mate while out at the Kennedy Ranges about a week ago. All his food, clothing, sleeping gear etc. locked in the back and inaccessible from the front a/c cargo barrier.

Driving around for about an hour over some corrugations eventually freed it and we got the rear door open but were then to scared to close it in case it didn't open again.

Had to remove the striker and strap the rear door shut with ratchet straps to secure it closed. Those Disco 2 rear doors are a disaster in the dust.

And when it fails don't count on being able to open via the inside handle as it may not work either. I had this happen on the first night of a trip from Melbourne to the Simpson. Thankfully it didn't happen later. Back to Melbourne and happily the dealer was still open on a Saturday, had the part, fixed under warranty. Still a pain with the cargo barrier in and fully loaded. 24 hour drive to catch up with the rest of the convoy.

Another option is to only install a half barrier so you can still lay down the seats and get in underneath it.

X2. The bottom half of the barrier does nothing. Swapped mine for a 1/2 cage years ago.
The 1/2 cage is much more user friendly for putting longer objects in the vehicle too.

Cheers,

Jason

Except that the seats are not rated to restrain a load from behind. In a decent crash the seatbelt ends up restraining the load, with the passenger between it and moving seat :(.

Sooner trust a full barrier as a quasi roll cage too :) but that's just me. Plus my barrier was free :D
And good post Mr A, a timely reminder. Definitely worth removing the tab, easy for gear to fall on top and block it.

Hi Folks, While travelling remote I had the rear door refuse to open when all the others opened. Dont have a barrier but back packed up and all strapped down. I have a home made false floor fitted so I could not access the inside handle. Eventually got the door open and removed the lock. Found some insulating tape inside lock and a LOT of dust/dirt. Cleaned it all up and lubed it.
The button is a one way action - will lock but not unlock as it has a free movement area in the unlock direction of the lever that the button rod attaches to. Analysing it I fitted a small screw to eliminate the free movement so the lever bears on the screw and now the button will unlock the door if I pull it up. However there is not enough of the button showing to properly grab so I drilled a small hole through the button near the top and have a loop of sash cord to pull on/snag with a rod.
Works a treat. Thankfully its not locked me out since but I have a plan B if it does.:D
Try it.

If a half barrier is solidly installed it can still help in a roll over.

Has anyone effectively made a dust seal for the mechanism/actuator? Would solve all the dust issues.

Hmmmm, I have removed my inside handle all together when I made my rear door table, might have to investigate an option...

I modified a full barrier...
Bottom sections of mesh removed...
Drop seats and can go into rear area..
If it's loaded, just undo the lower mounts and pull barrier out.
Actuator button protected by a small piece of ally over the top to prevent loads keeping it down..
Being the side with the fridge slide, the fridge can be pulled forward to access the rear door...
